They still air this on CTV and CTV Two with the original sponsor tags for a hotel (which I don't know the name of), and Tilden (a car company). They're very interesting.
This song is so fabulous. The end music is even better than the opening I think bacause of the clever and beautiful last few bars of music. I loved it as a child and I still love it today, I'm now 40 years old and I just started crying when I watched and heard this! We are so lucky in this day and age to be able to hold on to our childhood memories by recording them. We can watch them over and be children again for as long as we live.
It's weird in a way, I don't think I could re-watch episodes of this show w/o ruining it on myself, just b/c when you're older you know how unrealistic it all is. But listening to the theme music still makes me feel emotional & I think it's partly b/c there is actually this depth to the show - as I kid I always felt sad at the end when he left a potential home, and now I recognize it as this idea of a creature with a self-sacrificing altruism, and there is something very touching about that.
I remember being so upset at the end of every episode, when he'd plod off on his own again into the Canadian wilderness. I've got tears running down my face as I type this, and it's amazing how at the age of 35, that ending sequence and song still wrenches my heart.
I'm going to give my border collie a big cuddle now!
when I was little I used to have to change the channel before the end of the credits as I used to start crying when I saw him all alone staring out across the water!!
i use to ball my eyes out loud! my parents had to try and get me to calm down, cause while watching the end credits i thought he would never come back...loool
Programmes like this made me want to leave the UK and move to North America when I was a young child, great theme tune (along with Greensleeves for Lassie)
@alastairmctavish no lol your not. I remeber Ricky sitting in his car and watching it and singing the tune. Then I saw it on T.V. and thought oh theres the show Ricky was watching lol.
@RNC200707: it woudl've been great to see london meet up with fred penner....when i was a kid, i used to think the two shows were related due to the similarities in the intros and outtros....(both lead characters) wandering through fields, woods, over fences, and across water...
Oh My God, great memories when I was a little child. Love Terry Bush song. Always be filmed in Ontario province. I think mostly in Peterborough ot Scarborough (something like that). Great 1979-1985 TV Show (Very Simple). R.I.P. various dogs who make acting of LONDON the dog.
The ending song combined with the ending video was without doubt the absolute perfect combination. There are very few family-oriented shows like this anymore, especially ones that had such a globally spanning appeal like Hobo did. Count me amongst the crying majority.
That's the original black and white series from 1960-1963. They need to bring this new colored series out on DVD. I plan to write to the production companies and ask them to do just that.
I used to watch this as a little girl in South Africa! I can remember it always being a bitter sweet thing to watch, can't remember why, but it must be like tribetng says because I can't remember any particular episode as it was so long ago. I think I always felt sad seeing him on the road and not somewhere safe and protected.
You know your right it was hart a brakingly (is that a word?) sad thing to be watching on a sunday afternoon. I cant remember if thats when i watched it but it sounds right, i used to watch with my mum, this and little house on the preary, oddly another sun tea time show with a content that was often quit hard for yongstars to take. They wouldnt make eather these days and we're all the pooer for it.
I loved this show in Ireland didn't show it si saw it in htv Wales channel on Sunday mornings with one if my bros. I cried as the dog would find a home with a person/s he'd help them, they'd get attached to him and he'd leave even thou he didn't need to. What got me was the person he'd leave behind how heart broken they'd be he left and does anyone know how the show ended???? I bawled watching the end theme now.
I can remember I watched this show back in about 1991/92. It was on Channel 7 here in Australia at 9am. My brother used to set the VCR to tape it it for me, and I'd watch it after I came home from school. Was my favourite of all time. By 1995 they stopped playing it, and when a Channel 7 reporter came to our school one day that year, I had a go at him and told him to put it back on! Still love this show today. I wonder how long London lived for, as I get sad to think that he'd be long gone now.
I am attempting to gather info on London, his descendents etc for a book in the works.... anyone with any info regarding this should contact me. Also looking for info on dog used in movie: Last of The Dogmen.........
I agree with you, when I saw the ending I tried to hold back the tears but I couldn't help it, it's so sad to see him go after a case has been solved. I love this show.
It is still aired in Canada on CTV. If you live anywhere getting the CTV Network. Its on at 7:30 AM in your region. CTV Toronto it on at 7:30 AM Eastern. :)
I just made a comment on another video of the opening credits of this show and I know exactly what you mean. I am crying now as I write this. I was always worried about how London was going to find food and shelter for the night even though I knew this was a show, When I used to watch this show as a kid, this used to be my biggest concern. I used to watch Hobo on CTV no Sunday afternoon. Even seeing the closing credits now with London in the sunset gets me right in the gut.
good times, no matter where i was living as a kid this show was on, and i moved all across canada back then.....26 now and wow this brought abck a lot of memories...
How sad he was walking along the road one day when an artic had a blow out swerved to the side and now he is the flatest hobo! Should have been on a lead and who picked his crap up? Pesky animal!
I'm 24. And i remember watching this as a kid. I'd cry everytime the show would end. haha. But then my mother would go "He'll be back next week!" -.- good times.
Ahhh, school holidays in the UK.....if you're between 30-40, you'll know the Little Hobo. You'd get stuff like 'Flash Gordon', 'Lassie', 'Grizzly Adams', 'Why Don't You?' or 'The Littlest Hobo' himself.....then go outside and play in the sunshine. That was before Playstations and vitimin D deficient kids who just stay in their rooms playing Grand Theft Auto all day!
Watching this brings a tear to the eye. I pestered the 'rents for a dog for a long time so I could have my own dog adventures. After a while we did. Sadly she died aged 14 years a few years ago, now watching this again makes me quite melancholy :(
Actually, if you have time-shifting, you can catch TLH every hour for 5 consecutive hours Saturday mornings on CTV from Halifax and going across the country until it airs on Vancouver's CTV. 'Owl TV' kicks off the schedule.
The end gets me crying more I think. :-( God, what a show!!! Not like that crappy failed YTV/USA sitcom 'Dog House' (Digby, the talking St. Bernard) from the early-'90s.
Yeah, I used to watch The Littlest Hobo all the time with my Mom, it was the best show ever(London was a siberian husky I think??)...and tristanunsworth I agree with what you said about that show 'Dog House' featuring the St. Bernard, that show was cancelled after only one season, thank god I couldn't stand that damn show for a second.
I bet the Littlest Hobo would beat the crap outta Lassie........and then probably forceably have sex with her. How's that for an opener for the new series,,,,huh,,,huh????
I have to agree with you. Too many reality shows i dont watch much tv anymore as I used. The shows back then were awesome. Now these shows suck big time.
I loved this tv show since I was a child including my late parents. I remember that my dad had said that Charles P. Eisenmann was the owner and trainer of London, Max and Hobo, those were the two other dogs that were on the show, and I remember he was on t.v. talk show and brought London with him, and London had done some tricks on german command. Unfortunately I don't recall which tv talk show, but I will research more. I wish they had all the episodes on DVD.
I like the Littlest Hobo since I was a kid. I'm sorry you are wrong about the 2 other dogs names and other things. It's o.k. poeple do make mistakes. There is The Littlest Hobo Page that gives more info.
The description for this video is amazing. The original theme should have been released as part of a soundtrack release, not a remake by the same singer.
I grew up on this show also! I still love it! I am very excited that it is now playing early mornings on saturdays. If you live in ontario tune into CTV 7:30 am on saturdays and you can watch it live on the air :)
i remember the end more than the begining, just for a moment there i was 6 yrs old again. im assuming london (the dog) is dead so rip london. lassie was shite in comparison.
Can anyone upload the ORIGINAL theme song of the black and white series, its a much sader and I think a better song than this one, however this is a great one too, great lyrics too
I like the differences in the tones between the begining and ending theme song and the music at the very end isn't include in the opening. This is one great television show
Rest in peace little hobo. Hobo may not be alive anymore - true - but, he accomplished so much for broadcasting companies. How do you say thanks to an animal that expects nothing in return? What a lovely dog. I loved 1979 - 1985 TV series too.
Great Canadian classic! When I was a kid, I used to cry as these closing credits played. London went from home to home helping out people in need, but he never had a real home :(
A nice shot of London as he walks along Second Beach in Vancouver. In the fore ground of English bay, the north shore mountains and Point Akitson's Lighthouse about 6 miles away, watch closely and you see the Lighthouse beacon flash. Apperently, London understood about 5000 word vocabulary and commands.
nidge 76, The last time I saw a tv appearence of London must of been some 17 years ago. He was in the late stages of his life , yet the dog came out and was able to do some great tricks.
I never forget the boy on stage crying when he saw London, the dog show some great love towards the boy.
Im not sure when London died, it must of been in the early 90's.
I remember watching this series when I was 6 or 7 years old back in the 80's. I always loved the end credits when Hobo sat on a rock near a beach. It always made me feel sorry for him and made me cry too, cause he was all alone in the world. Thanks for posting it up.
I'm only in my 20s, but I've lived in a LOT of different places....I love this song as it sums up my experience of live. And I loved the show as a kid.
I agree with LondonOntGuy. Unfortunately, the majority of Canadians would rather spend their money buying American tv shows on vhs or disc, rather than good 'ol Canadian shows. Does the show "Beachcombers" ring a bell to anyone?
I loved this show. I do remember some episodes. Wish they'd put this version on dvd, not just the 60's version. I read that the London trainer who actually had many London dogs over the years was or is one of the very best German Shepherd trainers ever. Read some stories on how amazingly smart his dogs really were. I did a music video to this using Terry Bush's cleaner studio version of this song(imho better version). It can be found on my videos.
There were two dogs, the original one, an Alsatian Shepherd, was named London. The trainer Charles P. Eisenmann has several dog training books. His method must work because London was capable of some amazing feats with apparently no "trick" photography. A Canadian Classic!
They still air this on CTV and CTV Two with the original sponsor tags for a hotel (which I don't know the name of), and Tilden (a car company). They're very interesting.

I love the bit where he's riding the freight train like he's some Jack Kerouac character.

Such a cute dog. One of the best kids tv programs ever. And one of the best theme tunes. I never knew it was Canadian.
oclandestin 3 years ago 2
Alsatian, not as clever as a Border Collie.
But what a great series. They don't make 'em like that any more. I have had the theme tune in my head for the last 25 years at least.

The description for this video is amazing. The original theme should have been released as part of a soundtrack release, not a remake by the same singer.

A person remembers if this poor dog is finally a home at the end of the series?

Great song of the ontarien (Canadian) singer Terry Bush of 1979. My best TV theme of all time.

This should have won more awards. I'm still waiting for them to say: "And the Oscar goes to,... The Littlest Hobo".

I grew up on this show also! I still love it! I am very excited that it is now playing early mornings on saturdays. If you live in ontario tune into CTV 7:30 am on saturdays and you can watch it live on the air :)

Can anyone upload the ORIGINAL theme song of the black and white series, its a much sader and I think a better song than this one, however this is a great one too, great lyrics too

You know, that's the show that I remember from when I was a kid. I think either Johnny Cash (or somebody with a voice like his) sang it...
"Traveling around from town to town
Sometime I think I'll settle down
Moving's the only life for me..
.."
So, it's been over 40 years since I heard it, but it's still in my memory!!

The ORIGINAL version (early 1960's) was the best...,but back then so was AMERICA.

I loved this TV series so much...and I remember I always cried at the end of each episode when he went away again.

Great Canadian classic! When I was a kid, I used to cry as these closing credits played. London went from home to home helping out people in need, but he never had a real home :(
whistledog 4 years ago
A nice shot of London as he walks along Second Beach in Vancouver. In the fore ground of English bay, the north shore mountains and Point Akitson's Lighthouse about 6 miles away, watch closely and you see the Lighthouse beacon flash. Apperently, London understood about 5000 word vocabulary and commands.

I used to love this show. how do you know so much about it?
nidge76 4 years ago
nidge 76, The last time I saw a tv appearence of London must of been some 17 years ago. He was in the late stages of his life , yet the dog came out and was able to do some great tricks.
I never forget the boy on stage crying when he saw London, the dog show some great love towards the boy.
Im not sure when London died, it must of been in the early 90's.

they actually used a bunch of different dogs, even a couplke girl dogs

I remember watching this series when I was 6 or 7 years old back in the 80's. I always loved the end credits when Hobo sat on a rock near a beach. It always made me feel sorry for him and made me cry too, cause he was all alone in the world. Thanks for posting it up.

This was shown in the UK aswell I use to watch it when I was a kid,I want this on DVD.

I agree with LondonOntGuy. Unfortunately, the majority of Canadians would rather spend their money buying American tv shows on vhs or disc, rather than good 'ol Canadian shows. Does the show "Beachcombers" ring a bell to anyone?

love the song and the show, brings back great memories from my childhood in Ontario, amazing dogs in the show
ERIK0816 5 years ago
