  • BORINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • you sound like arnold schwarzenegger

  • can this be done with a telecaster? great job btw!

  • @Gruhak

    Indeed....

  • @Gruhak i did it with my gibson ES, i think you can do it with your telecaster as well :)

  • @EnragedSlash

Thanks! Oh bloody hell, now i have to buy a wah :D

  • Hejsan! Vilken wahwah-modell använder du?

  • @danielfranspanga

    Dunlop Cry Baby GCB95

  • @BjornRiis Tack så mucket!

  • i got myself the crybaby and did this and i had trouble doing it the right way i worked it couple times and i got it ,i spent one day just messing around with it .i hooked my bass to and it does it with a bass too!!if you have another pedals such as whammy flanger chorus delay .specially i have the whammy i keep rotating the pitch switch and you find yourself with tons of insane ways to listen the gilmour segull effects.

  • Fantastic demo! I have an original 79 Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man...what exact settings on the knobs of that unit do you use? The milliseconds designations don't relate to the Memory Man or other analog delays. I'm sure he used the Binson EchoRec...

  • @garbeaj

I think 300ms is around 10 o'clock. At least on mine.

  • @BjornRiis What about the other knobs? The Blend, Feedback and Delay knobs that is. I have tried it with all three around the 10:00 mark and it seems to work well. There is a factory red mark on the unit at this spot on all three knobs by the way. I can't believe how great this sounds! I have an early 70s Vox wah and an original '68 maple neck "Woodstock" strat and this trick sounds dead on just as you say. Amazing that with your help I've finally got this trick after all these years!

  • Very cool.

  • This is incredible! I always thought it was Rick who made those sounds. Great post!

  • A question, I noticed that when I do this, I can't get the 'laughing' effect when you dip the volume. You think you can help? Everything else works but the 'laughing' part. I have a vox wah-wah model V847 and a digital delay.

  • I also think he used this effect in "Is there anybody out there?"

  • @doodleguitarist yes thats the one too.and the one on the jam corrosion in the pink room

  • That guitar is freaking beautiful bro...

  • Tried it with my Tele and a standard Crybaby GCB-95 bought in 2010 and modded for true bypass.

Works like a charm I'll be doing this for days without end, thanks!

  • How does this actually work. I don't mean in terms of connections, I mean what's happening electronically to produce the tone ?

  • Doesn't work on FX pedals :( (Not on a Boss GT-10 anyway)

  • LOL

  • It's really meant to be whale song, isn't it?

  • Oh that's how they didi it. Great to see! Thank you!

  • Great stuff. Works perfectly with a Dunlop GCB-95 Cry Baby. The pedal must be activated and in the heel down position. Works for me with both a Standard Strat and a Les Paul.

  • this guy sounds like arnold shwarzcnigger

  • JImi Hendrix wah works great!!! and its i beleive better controled

  • I always thought it was a recording of giant ants in a huge cave that echoed their calls. Really cool.

  • Sound like a very insane sea gull lol

  • that was a great remake of that sound... i actually did not believe it was your guitar... if you in fact can wire something backwards to make it happen?

  • Could VOX WAH V 845 do this? Please, answer...

  • Dude! You have this down perfectly! Well Done

  • A question, can doing this damage the wah pedal? Not sure if it's coincidence but I tried this effect and then noticed a drop in volume on my pedal when using it in the normal manner.

  • @ColinPRS

No... only your ears and speakers if you're not careful with the volume :)

  • @BjornRiis

Thanks for your quick response, it does seem strange though as the pedal was virtually unused before I reversed the leads!

  • a question, I have a Gibson SG, this effect can only be done with fender stratocaster? thanks

  • @kevinmateo96

It's explained in this article gilmourishdotcom/?p=754

  • You can hear this effect on "Is there anybody out there" too

  • So, I have a Laguna and a Line 6. If I get a wah pedal, can I do this, or does it only work with the equipment in the video?

  • that was great ,but does anyone have a clue on how or who does the background effect while gilmour does the seagulls on echoes?on the creepy part of the song?is it that waters sliding the bass with something?

  • Thanks man!!! ;D

  • I am just happy I was not on stage, doing a sound-check, when this sound was first discovered by Gilmour or his guitar tech/sound man. I bet it was ear-splitting.

  • Do you think this effect would work with just the volume knob? My guitar doesn't have any tone controls.

Also, what kind of Vox wah are you using here? Thanks :)

  • como chucha se hace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Haha. Didn't know that gilmour made that sound with the guitar.

Always tought that rick made that sound with the synthesizer. It's sounds so awesome, specially during 'Is there anybody out there'. David Gilmour really is the sound wizard.

  • why doesn't it work with Modern Cry baby versions?

  • does this work with powerhouse strat...? cause im not getting it and i am using a crybaby gcb95

  • and whats fucking sweet about this, is that david did that on accident (plugging it in wrong). pure brilliance

  • Is it work with a Crybaby Classic?

  • legend

  • Awesome!! I can use this effect too! I've tested it today. My question is: is it dangerous to the wahwah pedal or to the amp?

  • @lucasinsane i think its not dangerous for the pedal ! ... But for your woofer ! :/

  • On the 06 Gilmour tour some asshole behind me was mocking the seagull sound during echoes.

  • Hello Bjorn, I've just subscribed to your channel,

anyway on this demonstration I don't understand

how the sound comes out from the amp since you plugged

the output of the wha into your guitar.

I'll be glad to know this.

    Thank you for all.

    Mick

  • what the adjustment of the memory man please ?

    great job :D

  • det dær va fette earporn for en floyd fan :P

  • works on my bud-wah. thanks bjorn!

  • does it work with a crybaby cause i can't get it to work = ( and i have a strat and i reversed the inputs

  • @ThisISHappanin

Only works with vintage style Cry Baby and Vox. Modern versions and Signatures doesn't work.

  • @BjornRiis aww damn oh well thanks anyway =D

  • @BjornRiis I have a modern Cry Baby, and the effect works perfectly.

  • @BjornRiis does it work with a dunlop gcb-95 standard crybaby or do I have to mod it with fasel inductors? :)

  • @BjornRiis Yeah, I tried it with a 535q. It didn't work.

  • @ThisISHappanin Mine works, Just a standard cry baby

  • @ThisISHappanin I have a CryBaby and works perfect for me. Mind you that your pedal has to be active (like if you were using the wah, not on bypass) and that the pedal has to be open.

  • i tried, but it didn't work! maybe because i used a 15 watt amplifier..?

so i solved the problem by using a metal zone (Boss), but it's a bit more difficult to control

  • im not getting the laughing when i turn the knob slowly down.

  • Bjørn, du er min helt :D Fantastisk spilling av On The Turning Awa, DSOT :)

  • @roaldski

He he! Takk skal du ha!

  • Hi!

Tell me, please, will it work, if my lower tone knob is connected with both bridge and middle pickups?

    Thanks!

PS: sorry for my English :)

  • Man, i'm loving this. Listened to it over and over, that sound (coming from an almost-practice setup) is HUGE. I'd love to hear that with a stadium setting, that should pound my heart.

I'm subscribed to your channel since quite a lot, please keep it up with the videos, i can't wait for the next one ;)

  • Thanks!

  • hey just by curiousity does this trick damage your pedal ? please please reply i have an upcoming gig must know fast thanks m8 take care

  • @pinkfloydman123

    it doesn't damage your pedal.

  • That absolutely blew me away!!

That is the EXACT sound! Wow!

  • Superb demo.

  • O_O

  • can i do this whith a Korg AX3000G ??? Can you help me please i want this effect to play this song whit my friends

    Thanks

  • ...by the way...your voice is much to low in the video....to understand your voice, I have to raise the computer volume enormously...but when the first seagull comes, it tears the speakers apart...;)

  • Björn, when here in the video you give the very first example, do you do anything with the Wah-Position itself, or is it in a fix position of your choice?

I bought a Cry Baby GCB95 and it generally works, but even with Tone-Poti in zero, there still is a constant tone which only disappears, when I raise the wah pedal all the way up..but to achiveve a not too high pitch, I have to quickly get it close to "closed" while turning on the Tone Poto on the guitar....not that perfect handling...?

  • he said it's fixed all the way to the bassy side

  • do you need a delay to do it?

does it affect bad on your amp or wah wah?

i didnt make it btw :P

    i do sth wrong :(

  • You need delay or echo to get the right tone. It won't hurt your equipment.

  • do you have any idea.on how does roger waters come with his part on bass.i mean how is that effect done?

  • what is your left hand position ? u need to use it ?

  • No. I'm just holding the neck.

  • ok thanks for replay.

  • I just did a video on exactly this except i used a thomas organ wah from the 70's

  • I knew about the wah reverse, but the use of the tone control was great to find out about. Thanks man.

  • Is this good for your guitar or amp? It can't be..

  • Very cool ... I too always think of whales communicating when I listen to Echos.

  • Thank's Man!

  • Bjorn, please do more videos like this, on anything.

  • wow man... i didn't know that was a guitar to play that sound... you're amazing! keep on with these tutorial!

    great job!!! =) 5 *

  • wow, bjorn, you look really trim these days, great playing, thanks for your work, well done!!

  • The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think.

Oh by the way, which one's Pink?

thank you, great keep posting more and more , yes please do the set up of the gear for this tutorial ,

  • @movingstereo

    Pink = Syd+Roger.

  • @k0stil

Then Floyd = David, Nick and Rick!!!

  • Would be cool if you also do a how to set your effects ect tutorial . Thanx for sharing

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial.. Love you site

  • i always thought rick did this bit

when i read on your site about the "seagull effect" i thought it was referring the the quieter squawks in the background

its so bizarre because i only looked this up today and then i see you made this vid

  • I used to think the exact same thing, because they actually sound more like the sound a bird makes (more like a raven or something) :D

  • great!!

  • Thats a great tutorial!

  • It has ALWAYS been referred to as "the seagull effect".

  • @Masherbrum

i wonder why it`s not "albatross effect"

  • Excellent tutorial! I always thought it was supposed to be a whale call rather than a seagull, though.

  • Comment removed

  • You should do many more effects tutorials. GREAT work.
