  • confusion

  • the crowd is liek wtf :D

  • Maybe a few folks would like to check out a new player?

Click on the link below, This is an Original Tune & Groove.

  • I recently discovered a new band, and it made me think about this song.

Listen to the first minute of each song and then tell me If you also think it is a little bit too similar ...

Type "Tetragon Dragon Song" and listen to it.

  • @MrSaccageur : it is similar because it's a cover of Mclaughlins Dragon song from the 1970 Album 'Devotion', elements of which he took and added some of 'One word' from Tony Williams lifetime to make Mahavishnu's 'One Word'. Good find though, I'd never heard of this before.

  • @bazonics : yep, I found too that Tetragon's version is a cover of McLaughins' one.

Tetragon, though, deserves to be known, like a lot of others. For that purpose, sneaking around on the internet is the best way!

  • pure genious !

  • that drum solo literally brought a tear to my eye.

    reminds me of my father.

    r.i.p. big rick

  • i'm eclectic - - but if there is one piece of music that i want to hear when i'm dead : this is it-- makes me laugh , want to cry , want to danse.....so much energy!!

  • formidables musiciens du mahavishnu orchestra!!! DIDIER D'AGOSTINO Batteur/compositeur VIDEOS SUR YOUTUBE.ET DAILYMOTION

  • Chili Peppers should come out with an album of fusion and blow everyone's mind.

  • @eliasblasto chili Pepper's has some very tallented folks... however I think they would be the very first to say that they Have absolutely nothing on this band. No Way In Hell that Flea wouldn't step up and say "these guys are gods".....

  • Nobody can still come anywhere close to what John & the boys put out back then

  • What can you say about these guys, other it stands the test of time. Musicians today should really go back and study what was being put out in those days. Saw Mahavishnu back in 72 & 73. F.......ing amazing!

  • @cujo1850 Oh man...and where they ever...! My heart races thinking about the shows I listened to them at.

  • This is a good video foreal.''Mahavishnu Orchestra''.

  • I saw these folks in the 70's at the Lincoln Town Hall in NYC...they where so mesmerizing that I only got to smoke one joint the whole concert from being nailed to my seat from the intensity, I and friends snuck up on stage early in the day and I tapped Billy's drums, we got caught, a stage hand turned us in, we escaped from the security guard, he turned the corner to take us into some office for holding we ran off..his drum heads where heavily dented, they put 125lbs in front of each Bassdrum

  • everyman needs to stretch his psychic strings within his own dimension space. those that seek to disrupt the vibration are abomination. they should be removed which is a euphemism for destroyed. the psychic strings are pure. the saboteur doensn't have purity doesn't have a clean soul. therefore, their desire is to destroy you so there is no comparison to them, soul-less empty meaningless function-less, evil. remember the key word is space.

  • Omar Rodriguez lopez was here!!!

  • 1:00

    DOES FRUSCIANTE ALSO PLAY VIOLIN?

  • That drummer is really lighting it up.

  • 0.47 kinda reminds me of Joy in repetition by Prince

  • The most epic drum solo in the history of mankind.

  • Now that's what I call jamming.

  • @jasonmdasilva Except it's not jamming... :-)

  • This is what happens when your gig contract stipulates that you will paid by the number of notes you play.

  • Had me laughing all night! Thank you. :)))

  • While this isn't my thing, this is certainly interesting to listen to

  • is that urkle's dad on the drum?

  • now this is awesome ;)

  • i love this song i'm so happy rhcp put this on their play list so other people can discover it.

  • yes nice bass visit norpoman.com

  • @123476565656 This is what is known to music fans as "jazz-fusion".

  • nice bass solo!

  • Crap noise rock.

  • Is this on fast forward? lol

  • i'm glad kiedis sent me here

  • @MAUR1C1OX It almost makes up for his new look. :p

  • @jordanowen42 half the moustache :)

  • @MAUR1C1OX That's what I call an "emo Hitler."

  • Absolutely incredible!

  • Billy Cobham in fine form! Mad.

  • Saw them live. And this song blew me away.

  • Haters are going to hate. What else do you expect them to do? Love? Now that would be a beautiful transformation.

  • Amazing!

  • Há 40 anos que gosto disto e acho que vou continuar a gostar por mais 40...

  • “When I hear new music coming into my head, its mission is integrated into its notes. It basically tells me how it wants to be.” – John McLaughlin. From Page 1 of the book “Follow Your Heart – John McLaughlin song by song.”

  • I uesed to play with a guy who was as fast and fluid as John Mac and it was a real buzz ^^

  • for me celestial terrestrial commuters of the highest order....

  • @MetallicXXX9

Thats what I'm saying though. People need to look beyond the mainstream. Because as you say, modern mainstream music is shite imo. Thats why I ignore it and find the truly amazing bands, who are often ignored. Its sad.

  • in one word: WOOOOWW

  • OMG.... I stopped breathing and feel out of my chair half way through this song !! Amazing ...thx

  • Some one get Billy a priest that man needs an exorcism! Awsome!

  • What happened to my BRAIN!?!?!

  • isnt it nice when the two top comments are against each other

  • awesome sonic assault. Striving to beyond the great beyond.

  • Holy Crap! It's a spiritual ejaculation. Which is nice,

  • My 14 yr. old son says,"So what did YOU listen to at my age?" I showed him this. He's now a classic alt> rock junkie...LOOOOLLLL

  • "PLAY ALL NIGHT!!"

  • Comment removed

  • amazing the building is still standing during that drum solo...

  • This group pinned me to the back of my seat at the Berkeley Community Theater in 1973. I'll never forget it.

  • one word, DEVASTATION

  • takes me back to some very HIGH concerts i had the privilege to hear with this Mahavishnu incarnation performing Birds of Fire....

    better times

  • Hindu fusion progressive? Really interesting....

  • The base player is all there.

  • The bassline is actually quite easy to play. He is just jamming on a couple notes, well more than a couple, but you understand what I mean. This ability is exactly what makes him a great bassist!

  • @alpal5 Yup nice playing :-)

  • @alpal5

Yeah, pretty basic pentatonic bass line. But as you suggest he plays with it till it is truly godlike.

  • That ending is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. It's almost twice as fast as the studio version! I mean, good God, how do you top something like that?

  • Boomer. Single stroke. The end.

  • If you think there is no better time to make music then that is great. But the fact is that there have been so many that have come before that it is extremely difficult to be new and different in this day and age. You will always be compared to the past. But that does not mean that great modern music can not be made. M. Orch. is one of the greatest musical presentations in the history of the Earth. Don't try to compare yourself to them, just appreciate the greatness, no matter when it was made.

  • Could you imagine Mahavishnu and Return to Forever in concert with Mahogany Rush and King Crimson, every musicians head would collapse under the weight of that kind of musicianship....LMAO

  • @Musiclogic Add Scofield and MMW and you would have yourself a party

  • We like!

  • this is STONER jazz

  • Fine performance from their prime.

The Fusion genre was one of the more interesting scenes of the time. Though the bands didn't have the brilliance of The Allman Bros. they made some listenable music.

  • @ManilaSyndicate The Allman Bro's can't touch this band. They'd burn.

  • still one of the forefront of fusion

    chaz

    vegas

  • One of my fondest wishes is that the original MO would settle their differences and reunite.

  • All the MO albums can be bought on Amazon or downloaded, get Between Nothingness And Eternity, will blow your mind

  • I CAME

  • Amazing!!!

    Billy Cobham is God!

  • 05:06 -- Beyond all of Cobham's other obvious qualities as a drummer what impresses me most about him is the way he uses dynamic range. He can play at a level that is almost overwhelming then take it down to barely a whisper in a way that makes complete musical sense.

Glad to see this vid has over a half million views at this point. Thanks bazonics for posting these and the other vids of Mahavishu playing live.

  • AMEN!

  • "Quite?" There has never been anything like this before or since! This was musical humanity being expressed by master musicians from 5 different countries as it had never been expressed before. And by the way, 'Between Nothingness and Eternity' changed my musical life to this day!

  • Nobody makes music quite like this anymore.

  • I saw this group in 1973 at Kent State. On the same bill was Frank Zappa.

  • Fantastic musical imaginations. McLaughlin leaves most players from any era in the dust. The musical scope of a great jazz guitarist wedded to a wall of volume and the drive of a runaway train. There's a real sense of Shawn Lane here, almost a music waiting for him, though of course i have that the wrong way round. Still, I can just see Lane jamming with Mahavishnu. Will have to wait for some whole other life to see that.

  • Instrumental virtuosos and musical visionaries, the Mahavishnu Orchestra was a band that soared to new heights and burned out much too soon. I would love to see new fusion bands playing this style of music with the intensity and passion of MO. Recently I have seen two bands that are taking this material to task: one is New York’s Mahavishnu Project and the other is New England’s Birds of Flame. Both have great players and a love and feel for this music.

  • @NoCoverCafe I wish Fusion would come back, too. It's time. These guys were the best when they played live. Try to get your hands on "Between Nothingness and Eternity", as soon as you can.

  • Ah, great old camerawork - no jump cuts - no frenetic swoops - you could actually SEE the artists perform.

Those were the days - - - sigh

  • I think MO was a self indulgent wankfest but my god Billy was good.

  • @66Ricas ABSOLUTELY wrong. I FULLY indulged as a VERY happy and GRATEFUL listener.

  • If my sources are correct, that's Jimmy Page's guitar teacher.

  • Best. Band. Ever.

  • monster ax!

  • nothing is more boring then an 8min guitar solo. /thumbsdown

  • @hellstoast What do you mean? The only solo is about 2 min long and it's perform by Billy Cobham at the drum set.

  • @hellstoast WRONG! There is NO "8 min guitar solo". Besides, watching paint dry is infinitely more boring so you are wrong again.

  • A great moment in history - when barriers were being broken, and real music thrived. This band raised the conciousness of so many people - it's humbling and an honor to be part of one of the only Mahavishnu Orchestra tribute bands in the world, The Birds of Flame. We can only aspire to play this music with all of the passion and fire - there will never be another band like this one.

  • This is my favourite one from the album. What a drum solo.

  • wow the bass solo is a lot less than i would have expected, seeing the other guys play. the bassist is not up to level with the rest of the band. i'm amazed that with such talents as Jaco and Victor Bailey around at the time, this guy would content himself with such repetitive playing.

  • @toskoramone It is common that listeners think that RL was not on par with the others. In terms of virtuosity this is certainly correct. However, the music that was created by JM and MO was a complicated and unique brew of many musical idioms. RL provided a SOLID foundation for the flights of fancy that JM, JG and JH executed. A solid foundation was needed and RL delivered this in spades.

  • @dorian411 Indeed. Although he wasn't able to blaze like the rest of the band, I think the bigger reason why he didn't play flashy solos is that there wasn't really room for it. I imagine Victor Wooten or Jaco Pastorius would have been bored stiff in this setting, never having an opening to take center stage. =P

  • @toskoramone I was an early admirer of Jaco (1973-ish), but I think he would have not fit (besides, he was an alcoholic with mental issues that did NOT fit in with McLaughlin's spiritural leanings). Also be aware of the fact that JM loved his playing and his musicianship (contrast to soloing). Finally, because RL was a sparse player, Billy Cobham felt the need (in his own words) to do MORE, so we certainly benefited as listeners. As a bass player and fan, I thought RL was perfect.

  • wow... that was amazing

  • when is Cobham ever less than stellar?

  • @souporsonic

Never. Recent stuff as spectacular. These five cats together = fusion SUPERNOVA. Brilliant beyond anything before or after.

  • as far as this one grain of sand is concerned . jm i don't know who he is or what he believes in.. in this cosmic universe you can't refute noisy guitar drums & basses etc so nwo SUCK MY DICK!

  • @PunSmoke

LOL! Best comment yet. Always funny to read something going against the grain, and hard!

  • @gorillabelly1

    Cheers

I went to see them at Sheffield City Hall eons ago

I was glued to my seat

if I had not been glued to my seat I would have left after ten minutes :)

  • one of the highlights in music.

  • This isn't jazz! This is rock! I've seen Mahavishnu Orchestra listed under Jazz, but listening to their music, it doesn't sound like Jazz. It sounds more like rock music. I love it!

  • 37 people read the dislike bar as dis i like so they clicked it. Thats the only explanation of disliking these!!!

    In just one word AWESOMEEEEE

  • Jan Hammer gave this great band another dimension to their sound and direction. Love his synth sound! Cobham's a beast.

  • John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham on drums.......... wow

    Rick Laird on bass?

  • I heard they were good but this just blew my mind

  • How the fuck, WHY the fuck, would someone dislike this!?

  • @kmfdm34l to get attention

  • Indeed —PLAY ALL NIGHT!!!...

  • Plz tell me the name of the bassist! he is so goddamn awesome!

  • @stevetyler0506 Rick Laird.

  • @bazonics no shit that dudes my uncle.

  • @bazonics not even lying that dudes my uncle.

  • @bazonics not even lying that dudes my uncle

  • @bazonics Great Group!!!

  • @stevetyler0506

    Bassist = Rick Laird

we categorized this in the jazz-rock. together wiyh weather report and return to forever they grounded for later fusion I guess

  • @stevetyler0506 -- RICK LAIRD if I remember correctly.

  • Damn, I feel nostalgic, even though I was born in 1992... and these days we have such horrible music, with no emotions at all! What the hell am I doing here?! : )

  • @sharingan3600 Pretentious fool. Ever took the time to search for interesting new music? There is a lot of out there. And if the existing music doesn't please you, make some.

  • Stop this shit. I was born in 1990 and I`m a, let`s say it, Jazz Guitarist. And there is no better time to make music than now. Think of it. You have no choice. The great Mahavishnu Orchestra wasn`t founded by people, who said: "Damn, I feel nostalgic, even though I was born in 1946...and these days we have such horrible music, with no emotions at all! What the hell am I doing here ?! Let`s get us back some good old Swing! There is an evolution to everything.(Not defending LadyGaga at all :))

  • @nassreiskulturen I totally hear what you're saying here. However, I think you're missing the point. There is indeed no better time than the present to create music. There have however been better times when it comes to *consuming* music. This is especially true when it comes to today's popular music. I'm sure there's plenty of good music out there to be found. The unfortunate thing is that you really have to look hard.

  • @wlmason73 It`s indeed true that the "listening-habits" of people change from time to time (not necessarily in decades). But you have to remember that there was horrible Bubblegum-Pop in those days to. The majority of people in the 50`s for example surely didn`t listen to Miles Davis.

  • @wlmason73 It`s indeed true that the, lets call it listening-habits, of people change from time to time. But you have to remember that there was bubblegum pop too in the past. The majority of people in the 50`s didn`t listen to Miles Davis and I bet most people prefered the Beatles "Help" (not counting them as Bubblegum-Pop, I love them) to John Coltranes "Ascension".

  • @nassreiskulturen i disagree with you. Beginning of XXI and the end of XX century is the age of best music ever. I don't say than Mahavishnu Orchestra is bad, in fact, they are excellent, but you need to spread the view of music, you need to develop your mind and realize that the time of jazz, rock, fusion is over, the new age came in the world of music. Try listening Massive Attack, Bonobo, Thievery Corporation, Portishead, Boards of Canada, Enigma etc. You will see that less is more.

  • @NousAbslolutus9 "I disagree with you". Concerning what point? You just repeated what I said (wrote). By the way, none of the musicians you listed are really contemporary.Electronic sounds and new age aren`t avantgarde anymore (rather old fashioned). The strength of Jazz is, as I think, the possibility to incorporate modern and fresh influences and to still have a sense of timelesness.

  • @NousAbslolutus9 fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!

  • @NousAbslolutus9 God damn you couldn't be more wrong

  • @nassreiskulturen there are so many great musicians that came before that It is extremely hard to make music in this day and age that is creative and different. But the modern musician just has to work harder to find the fountain. It will be much harder but greatness still can be achieved.

  • @nassreiskulturen couldn't be a worse time to make music, techniques may have evolved, but genuine musical innovation is thin on the ground. Also, so much product out there now and so many people making music that mediocrity is the defining characteristic, and that goes for all genres. Additionally, the value of music has diminished substantially, by virtue of the fact that there is so much of it out there, it is therefore harder than ever to make a living from music, even for the talented.

  • @digimaton I didn`t speek of a good time "to make a living from music", but to make music. We all know that those two things can`t be seperated. We all live in this world and have certain needs due to us being humans. We have to make a living. But if you really want to, you`ll find a way. You just have to think differently. Speaking for myself I have no choice but to make music, many sacrifices included.

    Best Wishes!

  • @nassreiskulturen dude, I've been "making sacrifices" for music for at least 20 years, so believe me I know exactly what I have given up materially as a result of dedicating myself to what I love, but bills have to be paid. You can work a sh*t job to make ends meet, or you can try and "make a living" from music, there is nothing wrong with that, your Romantic notion of not tainting artistic purity with commerce is well meaning but it is naive, fact is, times are hard for a lot of musicians.

  • @digimaton So you stopped doing it?

  • And I didn`t say that it`s wrong trying to make a living from it. Absolutly not. It would be misanthropic to postulate this "artistic purity", because this way you reject the Human Dimension. That would be pretty,as you called it, romantic.

  • @digimaton And I didn`t say that it`s wrong trying to make a living from it. Absolutly not. It would be misanthropic to postulate this "artistic purity", because this way you reject the Human Dimension. That would be pretty,as you called it, romantic.

  • @nassreiskulturen I love your position on this matter. As I deeply love jazz, I am always looking forward to see where it's all going to, so, could you please mention a couple of names of good , innovative musicians today?

  • @maraxus83 Will take me some time to make up a good list. Just have a little patience. Thank you. :)

  • @maraxus83 If you're into Jazz drumming, check out any recording with Brian Blade on drums. He is so musical and has such a feel, it's phenomenal. Joshua Redman's 2002 album "Elastic" is brilliant from start to finish and Blade plays drums on every track.

  • @nassreiskulturen FINALLY somebody says something different than everyone else. I applaud you

  • @videodaniel8945 ...in a cynic way? If not so - thank you.

  • @nassreiskulturen no, not cynic, I mean it

  • @videodaniel8945 What were you referring to?

  • @nassreiskulturen I agree...the fact is, too many people are caught up in this fast food/i want everything now culture and people dont take the effort to listen anymore.

  • @Clarkbass :-)

  • @nassreiskulturen

The problem is. Most people don't seem to realise that there is more music out there than the shite you hear on the radio or TV. They look at some disgustingly bad rubbish like Kei$ha or Lady gaga and say "Music today is dead". These people just can't be bothered looking for the good stuff.

  • @nassreiskulturen It's coming back, people want crazy ass bands that solo like fiends and rock their brains. This deevolution of music coming full circle.

  • @sharingan3600

    Listening to quality! ;)

  • One of the greatest pieces of modern music ever written and performed. Still brings tears to my eyes 38 years after I first heard it in college

  • Wow This song is amazing I have never heard of this group till today The Drumming Reminds me of a Subway train wow I love this song the Rythm the Precussion the everything I would give this 2 million stars. I Play Bongos and wow the Drumming is great

  • @Wehategod Billy Cobham is a legend. You should definitely look into more of his work.

  • Unbelievable experience to see them live. God made it click. One of the core experiences of my life. Some in the audiences would be so stunned they couldn't applaud. I was. Up there doing the IMPOSSIBLE inspiring other people to aspire to the impossible.

  • Brilliant stuff, brilliant era!!!.

  • i 'l try connect youtube film with SBB

  • seeing them in concert is a PHYSICAL experience - people are vibrating - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are about the only other band to work at this energy level!! we al need to blow out the cobwebs now and then!
