  • you wasted a fucking hour of my life to tell me that protien makes you want to eat less?

  • Some truly moronic statements about carbs here, and the inability to distinguish between complex carbs and refined. Atkins (along with most other diets) are for the most part, overweight people looking for a quick fix to a problem they caused by being a greedy lazy! There's only one diet I'm interested in...a balanced diet, and crazy as it sounds, a bit of f*cking exercise! Prevention is better than cure. Peace.

  • I call BS. I do not believe its because Atkins dieters eat less calories. I can go to a buffet everyday and eat 3-5 huge platefuls of meat until I'm ready to explode and still lose weight as long as I stay away from carbs. I'd often eat an entire can of almonds at a time and still lose weight. It's not until I start eating carbs(more than 100g) that I start gaining weight

  • This is so ridiculous. In all those years of testing and study groups and no one kept track of how many calories each group consumed in a day?! LMFAO. They should have known years ago that it's always been about calorie shortage!. As far as appetite suppression, of course protein makes you feel fuller! OMG,, it takes longer to break protein down so it sits in your stomach longer and so you feel fuller longer. Anyone whos ever ate a big steak knows it takes a long time to digest! Common sense

  • you are so right, sugar gets you in a rollercoaster of craving more sugar, sugar kills and feeds cancer!!!

  • none of the studies mentioned cutting the sugar cause lose appetite?

  • Here's another weight loss tip that should blow these *scientist's* minds: WATER

  • Jeez its like they found the stupidest dietitians in the world for this documentary.

  • there's a diet in France that has a huge succes: Dukan. It's like Atkins, but without the fat.

  • Okay, further studies have been done now! and the jury is in: Low-carb is good for us. Animal fats do not cause high serum cholestrol, rather, LDL is raised as part of an immune response to inflammation (due to glycation of arterial walls [from elevated blood glucose.]) The danger of high cholesterol lies not in the cholesterol itself, but rather in the root disorders which cause cholesterol to rise. Triglycerides are key. Low -carb is therapeutic.

  • @anabaptistnun

+1. Agree. But it's not so much that low carb is good for us, It's that frequent fast rises in insulin are so bad for us! That is what ultimately is the killer. Since carbs break down into glucose fast especially simple carbs like SUCROSE it causes insulin to rise quickly, which causes damage to arterial walls and cholesterol tries to heal the damage. Its a response action! Unfortunately cholesterol has always got the blame but it's never been the root cause!!

  • There also seems to be no recognition of the fact that over-filling the duodenum causes an outpouring of insulin for the expected carbohydrate tsunami. Therefore, it is not only the carbohydrate content of the diet that influences insulin output, but also every time you overeat, you get insulin levels raised. This directly affects the amount of glucose the liver must manufacture to balance residual insulin after the meal has been digested.

  • faulty study: They tested whether fat within a high-carbohydrate diet would reduce appetite. The study SHOULD HAVE tested whether fat influenced appetite within the context of a low-carbohydrate diet.

  • OK, its been years, i want results!

  • Everyone here is correct. The scientists in the video are stupid and didn't factor out sugar. Best set of comments seen, clearly this crowd gets it!

  • The atkins diet helps to increase natural testosterone and growth hormone production (anabolic hormones that thrive in a high protein/fat environment) If your lifting you need carbs to boost glycogen stores/water retention in the muscle pre-show, other than that you should be running on prots and good fats to increase muscle, keep body fat down. Easy, moan over, check either the metabolic diet or Natural Hormone Enhancment for even more info, hope this help you wanna be Paleo's.

  • OMG is everyone on this documentary idiots? Atkins work.

  • People overate fat calories. Did you notice what kind of fat they were adding? Looked to me like polyunsaturated oils and they were added to carbs. Duh! And if people have a natural urge to overeat, why are some people always thin? And why were most people thin in the past? And why are scientists idiots?

  • Thanks for posting this! How stupid can a researcher be and still be called a scientist?

They ask all the wrong questions and then draw flawed conclusions, then disseminate their findings like the word of God.

Atkins works. It improves health overall. Not only is the high protein a factor, but look at the effect of carbs! Jeez. The anecdotal evidence is screaming to be heard. It's not that hard to conceptualize a study or two showing the mechanisms behind the success of Atkins.

  • Hi has anybody been inspired by the Acuspeed 24 Diet (search on google)? I keep hearing some amazing stuff about it and my friend lost tons of pounds on it.

  • how stupid can you get? is about money

cheap crap is fattening so they must lie - another dogma to teach in schools

wait is done to the children already with no science to back anything = propaganda

  • wow...I just watched this whole thing. And I feel dumber than I did before I watched this. -__-

  • They just WILL NOT let go of the Carbohydrate/cholesterol hypothesis. They HATE to be proven wrong, so the grain and sugar industries fund study after study to prove Atkins and other low carb experts wrong. I know how I feel, I know how I lose weight. And I don't much care why. I just know!

  • I love how the entire documentary is upset about being able to not count calories and being able to eat as much as you want but then at the same time they show how eating this diet makes you eat less-

  • These doctors seem to know nothing about their own professions! It's a well known fact that protein makes you less hungry. That's why it is recommended that you eat things like eggs, meat and nuts for breakfast, rather than cereal, toast, etc. The Atkins diet may work, but so would any other high protein diet!

  • @thisisextra3 The reason atkins works so well is not only because it's relatively high-protein, but because it's a ketogenic diet.

If you were to eat a high-protein and moderate carb diet (enough carbs to avoid going into ketosis) you wouldn't lose as much body fat as low-carb and high-protein.

  • meat should be eaten sparingly, it is meant to be eaten when there is hunger for that substance in particular and not binged upon like atkins advises, its so detrimental, increased aging, negatively effects blood ph etc etc, the people who actually crave meat so much infact have the larger amount of unnecessary fat cells, therefore need this protein to negate fat buildup, but both should be avoided in the first place

  • cholestor levels and weight only were reduced as, water weight was lost due lack of readily available glucose, cholestorol levels move into cells and out of the blood, hence low blood cholestorol levels, yet cells will have massive stores of this cholestorol, it is ludicrious this diet still has a following, a shame that they have been misinformed

  • as a nutritionist i understand how this diet works, and i will tell you it is not beneficial atall, dangerous infact. We are built to be VEGETARIANS, there is unprecedented evidence for this, even einstein concluded this and was a vegetarian for his last years. MEAT is infact a failsafe for the body, as modern diet doesnt meet everyones protein requirements, Protein can fill in fat cells of a fat person TEMPORARILY, which gives them a "full" feeling which is infact false.

  • Not just fat vegies to what happend to the vegies

  • Why do these people praise carbohydrates so much? The body just converts them into sugar and fat?

  • This is bollox!

  • A high protein diet simply gives one a normal appetite; while a high carb sugar shock diet gives one an abnormal appetite and a high level of insulin; which affects appetite; and burning of bodily fat.

  • these bastards got it wrong again. fat is what suppresses appetite but in order for the fat to suppress appetite you have to restrict the carb consumption to about 15% of your whole calorie intake. These guys are totally wack, 67% of protein converts into glucose according to dr greg ellis. It's all about cutting carbs to about 15% of daily calories and increasing your fat intake to at least 75%

  • these bastards got it wrong again. fat is what suppresses appetite but in order for the fat to suppress appetite you have to restrict the carb consumption to about 15% of your whole calorie intake.

  • There you go. The reason for success on this diet or any other is the reduction of calories. Eating less than you normally do. When you eliminate a macro nutrient from you plate, you effectively lower your daily calories by about 1/3 to 1/2. I eat from all the food groups. I just eat less than is required. Also exercise 6 or 7 days a week. The combined calorie deficit from diet and exercise is what helps me. But nobody wants to hear that it takes effort to lose. They want magic.

  • @reptilianskin, why do you so readily accept the theory in this video, even though it has not been proven? Why is there an assumption that Dr Atkins could not possibly be correct? Dr Atkins experimented with people on lower calories including carbs and compared them to a group with higher calories on a low carb diet. The group that consumed the higher calories on low carb lost more weight. How do you explain that? Why can they not accept Atkins was right? They have not proven otherwise.

  • @jtking2504 Was Dr Atkins a scientist? No. He is a guy that had a theory. He published his theory to cash in on the diet. And his theories as to why the diet works have all been proven wrong. People feel fuller faster eating a high protein diet. That means they eat less calories. Calorie reduction = weight loss. So you can also lose weight eating less of the foods you normally eat. And you can lose more with reduced calories, and more physical activity.

  • @reptilianskin, I see your point, and different foods are broken down differently in our bodies. Eg, if 2 diets consists of same calories 1 all sugar & 1all celery, metabolism treats these foods very differently. The body requires more energy/calories to break down celery than celery even contains. Chocolate or even simple refined sugars require little or no metabolising. This could explain how eating more actual calories can lead to more weight loss depending on the type of food.

  • they killed atkins !

  • @matchbox555 I think so too.

  • protein makes you feel full

    who knew ? lol

  • Just curious. I keep hearing these retards claiming that the Low Carb diet is a High Protein diet. Well, what the fuck is High Protein defined as? Hmm? Because I can tell you that from randomly calculating my macronutrients one day while doing low carb I had consumed only 80 grams of protein. That's not fuckin' high by any means you dumbass "doctors". Hell, bodybuilders eat from 200 to 500 grams of protein and don't experience kidney problems. I hope the doctors in this see this comment.. fuck u

  • @PsychopathInFoil You might be right but do you have evidence to show that bodybuilders don't have kidney problems? At the moment, experts believe the kidneys use up calcium trying to break down the fat in animal protein. Also, when I studied nutrition it said that anything more than 1.2g per kilo of body mass was unnecessary for protein synthesis although the rest could be used for energy. That said, protein is not as good an energy source. But yes, they don't mention what high protein is.

  • @jgonsalk No I don't know what the numbers are, but I was just trying to say is that on an average day, your protein intake isn't going to be what you could consider "high protein". Somedays here and there. Unless you're eating steak everyday.

  • i feel f hungry all the time on low carb, its like im not even eating the food protine does not make you full...

  • bullshit , atkins funnily enough diet from his own diet ..

  • @klyspeez he didn't!! he slipped over and hit his head ...

  • @budsa11 ofc thats what they ll tell u

  • @klyspeez

what? If you meant he 'died' from his own diet, that's completely untrue.

  • They´re trying to make this into some big mystery...Protein makes you feel fuller faster so you eat less? Well, I´d say it´s as simple as carbs usually tastes better so you continue to eat even when you´re full. If I eat pasta I can continue to eat until my stomach almost burst...But if I eat for ex chicken...I get tired of it fairly quickly and can hardly swallow it after a while. So I´d say it has alot more to do with taste than texture. No big mystery here. Carbs are just too tasty ;)

  • Well, as long as you have low fat protein I think you'd be OK. That's the basis of the Dukan Diet now.

  • Close-ups are for porn

  • Most people mistakenly believe that extra fats you eat will be stored as fat. For our hunter gatherer ancestors, this was not a survival advantage, so it's not part of their or our metabolism.

Barry Groves, On the First Law of Thermoydnamics

Actually, excess fats aren't stored in the body. Any unused fat calories are excreted in urine and faeces. (Endocrinology 1962; 70: 579. Experientia 1963; 19: 319. Metabolism 1964; 13: 87-97. Proc Soc Exp Biol Med 1964; 115:424. Nature 1964; 201: 924)

  • Horrible documentary

  • well we know the effect of having high carbs lower protein... Look at whats happening now.... Cancer, diabetes, and heart disease run rampant

  • did they try to make these visuals so ugly on purpose? my god it's gross to watch.

  • It's the sugar..that's all. Get rid of the sugar (white sugar etc) and you'll lose weight.

IT's in everything....just read the labels and stay away from it. Sugar (carbs) makes you hungry.

  • @1955JAFO Actually its the carbs that turn into sugar into your body.... So the huge 6-11 servings of grains in the food pyramid.... all turns into sugar.... Helps block a hormone that tells your brain when its full

  • @briperez

Sugar is a carb fyi. And by the way it's not just any sugar in the body that blocks the hunger hormones it's fructose. Glucose is just fine.

  • I am very disappointed with the lack of science to conclude this documentary. "We simply don't have any evidence of the long term health impact of diets which are high in protein and low in carbohydrates" Um... 1.7 million years of eating animals does this qualify? Last 50 years eating carbs and we become obese! Is anyone else banging their heads over this one?

  • Timgillan, yes, I agree. These mental wimps either won't or can't let go of their wrong ideas about diet. And it's not a high protein diet, it's a high fat diet.

Actually, cooking goes back 1.8 million years with the start of Homo Erectus. I just finished reading Catching Fire by Richard Wrangham. Thanks to cooking meat, we have: 30% larger brains, smaller digestive systems, the beginning of pair bonding/marriage, division of labor (men cook, women hunt) and, unfortunately, abuse of women.

  • @AppleSouffle women abuse men more :(

  • @timgillan

I'm mostly astonished that no one figured out that the Atkins dieters where eating fewer calories than normal until so many years later!! Now that is astonishing. The Atkins diet is nothing special, it's just another LOW CALORIE diet. Yeh, he says you can eat as much as you like, key words "as much as you like". People did and they were actually eating less. If they had eaten like pigs beyond their daily energy expenditure they would gain weight on the diet. It's common sense!

  • Wanna see a better documentary on low-carb dieting? Check out "Fat Head". It was made as a rebuttal to "Supersize me".

  • @strato172 well...that is about the most silly documentary I´ve ever seen. It´s so stupid it´s ridiculous. He tried to ridicule supersize me in every possible way...to the point that the only thing he made fool of was himself. He used the most stupid comparisons, ask the most stupid questions and was just plain retarded.

  • @strato172 I love "Fat Head" excellent documentary!

  • BBC Slightly Anti-Atkins propaganda!

No long term effects of high protein diets? Boo hoo!

What about the long term effects of hi carb diet- A massive obesity epidemic!

    What a joke!

    Low carb all the way!

  • One of the most retarded conclusions I have ever seen! Protein play some role, but it is not the only factor.

  • Eat more protein,more vegetable,and less CRAB!! = The way of Dr.Atkins

  • One of the most retarded conclusions I have ever seen!

  • this documentary was seriously a was of time. thats their big discovery, fucking stupid.

  • There are no long term effects of low carb meat diets. We Humans have been hunter gatherers (hunting for meat, gathering for fruits, nuts) far longer then we have been carb eaters. It wasn't until the industrial revolution that we began to eat more processed breads, pastas, and other carbs.

  • @etekle AMEN!

  • @etekle haha, and fruit isn't carbs?? please, try to be at least minimally consistent in your train of thought:))

  • @surmeslevress ya its a carb, but i was mainly referring to processed carbs...

  • @etekle bananas are also high in carbs

  • @etekle Yes but the living age has gone up from about 35 to 70.

  • All you guys are retarded, protein has the highest satiety level of all the macronutrients. Do some fucking research, yes carbs often make people hungry and reduce appetite when there limited however protein has been conclusively shown make you feel full longer i.e. reduces appetite. Thus people on a low carb die, moderate-high protein diet spontaneously reduced calories and lose weight.

  • "for better or for worse" c'mon! As if our normal diet was any better...

  • they shouldn't have coupled the fats in the meals with carbs.... that kinda defeats the purpose of the experiment.

  • @eldogg4life

Why did they not check cholesterol levels? I understand that these levels, and triglycerides actually drop with an Atkins diet.

  • WOW, this is freaking amazing!

  • This whole story is crazy... it's as if they can"t see plain truth. When u remove carbs (bread, rice, sugar, pasta) most of the calories in your meals go away. Causing a low cal intake. Weight loss comes from you slowing down the carb intake. Your body needs carbs for energy, but if you are already fat soon as you eat a carb it turns in to sugar and becomes more fat. By cutting these carbs your body is now forced to use all of those stored fats as fuel. Thus making you a fat burning machine.

  • @Cjontel1 Well no, generally you will eat more protein and fat. But when you cut out all the processed junk like bread, pasta and sugar your insulin levels aren't through the roof all the time which means body fat is used for energy when needed instead of simply added to constantly.

  • what's with that stupid eerie background music throughout the documentary. -_-

  • honestly these people are a bunch a puppets... this is unbelievable, they are hiding behind their finger! Carbohydrates trigger a strong insulin response, which is the culprit of most of our woes... insulin is the main regulator of fat tissue and sustained high insulin levels in the blood cause heart disease, weight gain and diabetes.... goodness gracious it isn't rocket science!

  • @rhythmisadancer AMEN!

  • @rhythmisadancer you been doing your homework, it sounds to me like you earn a phd degree by reading the whole book of gary taubes. Great job, and keep up the good work.

  • @rhythmisadancer It doesn^t matter if ita a carb, protein or fat, your body can & will store as fat all of the above if your calorie intake exceeds your calorie demand.Real simple. Protein in escess can be turned to fat & insulin plays different roles.

  • @rhythmisadancer i know this is the worst, most shallow, unanalytical documentary ever

  • @rhythmisadancer

You do realize that protein also produces an insulin response as well? The insulin response from fish can be as high as brown rice. The only thing that doesn't really seem to not produce a high insulin response, if any is dietary fat which can still be stored as fat in the absence of insulin. Your better off eating a well balance diet than trying to make 50%+ of your diet fat so you can attempt to keep your insulin levels as low as possible.

  • Its not that protein makes you feel more full its that carbs make you more hungry because they get used up really fast because its alot easier for your body to turn carbs into energy.

  • The idiocy of these supposed experts is driving me batty. They were eating fewer calories because they were losing weight and therefore needed to eat less in order to reach energy balance. It didn't have shit to do with protein suppressing appetites.

  • Comment removed

  • Ok, so since you will die eventually, would it be better to lose weight with high protein and hopefully manage you weight and health or remain fat? Last I checked a lot people who eat a balanced diet die early and fat anyways. I say slim down to your goal and do your best to maintain your weight afterwards and do it as quickly as possible.

  • No mention of insulin?

  • Solved: all fat ass Americans are missing is more protein! Great, eat more hamburgers and Americans will lose weight as if they were on the Atkins Diet! After watching this, I lost a lot of respect for Horizon.

  • Muaytb1, not to pick on you, but you didn't actually say anything concrete there. Just a lot of whinging.

Reminds me of Steve Martin in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. "Oh, by the way, when you talk, have a point! It makes it so much nicer for the listener."

  • love everyone with their bro science.... oh so helpful...

  • high protein and high fat is how humans have eaten for 99% of their existence on the planet. Shift to higher carbs took place when we started to grow grains 10000 years ago. Humans are not adapted for high carb diet and that's why we have all these modern heart diseas and cancers.

  • This doctor (5:58) looks and talks like a hillbilly. I wonder how he was selected to talk in this documentary. Maybe to express the stupid point of view.

  • The pace of this documentary made me want to pull my hair out.

I would try this, but I love vegetables too much.

  • @Silverstarlightt then eat them! Most greens are acceptable! Just stay way from the starchy ones like carrots, but even them you can have just a few

  • @dkswede Why would I want to do that? Carrots are great.

Roots are plant carbs, but we need carbs to function. It's better than getting them from superly refined sources like pasta anyways. Besides, who wants meaty sweat? that's gross.

  • @Silverstarlightt actually we don't need carbs to survive. physiology 101 tells you both fat and protein can be used as fuel. the reason one might feel tired or kinda crappy during the first two weeks of atkins is that your body is learning to burn fat more effectively. once that happens you have heaps of energy.

  • Low carb eating works. Eating whole protiens, vegetables and other healthy low carb foods allows you to lose weight and regain your health. Dr. Atkins was a pioneer and never recieved the credit he deserved. People think the Atkins diet is only cheese curds and bacon. Nothing could be further from the truth. In the video they put fat on simple carbs. That is why our nation is fat! The simple carbs increase insuline levels, makes us hungry/sick/diabetic and fat! Sugar'sthe enemy-not Dr. Atkins.

  • @DB7597 Dr Atkins was no pioneer. Check out William Banting,

  • @DB7597 dude what are you talking about, vegetables most of its calories ~80% comes from carbs

  • low carb diet is not good for people who are already suffering from depression. lack of carbs do depress you...a balanced diet is the key.

  • @youareabitch2010 I heard high fat diets help stabilize serotonin levels putting you in a better mood overall. Carbs set your hormoes on a rollercoaster ride so it can't be good for depression. I'm no expert though as I have only been researching this over the last few days.

  • @youareabitch2010 It only brings about temporary depression.Carbs = depression.Period.

  • @ChanGengYun

    Carbs = depression.Period.

bogus claim. fuel your body with complex carbs and you will have more muscle and liver glycogen to fuel your workouts. Exercise is the best anti-depressant known to man. Fit people who work out on a regular basis have a much lower rate of depression. You want to be fit and happy and eliminate depression? Eat carbs and work out vigorously. Fact.

  • hmm so what can i eat for breakfast

  • I'm sorry, but you have to make a choice here. Sugar or Salt. ????

  • they didnt mention insulin and its role once in this shit documentary. fuck the bbc.

  • @angryahole Exactly right, fucking stupid studid misleading documentary

  • What do you expect? they were a bunch of fat Brits.

  • No long-tern studies, about how the diet affects health, eh? What about the epileptic kids on similar diets?

  • Doesn't it seem a tad hypocritical for these Drs in white coats rejecting the Low Carb diet for fear of harm to people's health? What on earth is their problem?- just look at at the alternative: epidemic levels of diabetes, heart disease, obesity, etc, etc!!! My goodness, maybe these Drs unconsciously fear they're going to lose a whole bunch of patients because potential patients are going to have far fewer health problems when on a low carb diet?! This diet, done properly, is safe & effective!!

  • @DrFlippin So true. I am training for boxing and use the atkins diet. Its amazing the gains i make on it. More strength, more endurance, more power, more stamina, quicker recovery rates.

  • you dumbass im no scienctist but i do alot of reserch and food with high protien contant make you feel fuller faster

  • I got a new diet. You can eat anything you like even carbs, as long as you exercise a lot. I mean real exercising. Not sissy things like taking the stairs or walking in the park. Pick up a real competitive sport like rugby and kick boxing or start training for a marathon.

  • Hey, too much DRAMA.. ofcourse we can´t eat a lot of butter, eggs, bacon, etc...

But it´s true if we eat less carbs and more protein ( lights proteins we lose weights!!!)

Just try to eat lights protein, less carb ( dont cut carbs, just eat less.... ), continue eating vegetables and fruits also !!!

    That´s it...

  • look out its the nutrition nazis from th BBC

  • Why don't they mention INSULIN for fuck sake.

  • @TheBudhistpunk

They don't mention or do any tests on the effects of insulin on the body, because that would prove that the way this diet works is simply by reducing the production of insulin in the body which in turn reduces the storage of fat in the body. That would be way to simple for these quacks!

  • @MyMusiclover28 Ha ha ha. You are soooo right. I didnt hear insulin mentioned once and as you rightly stated its a major factor in body fat.

  • Lean Meat haha.

  • Carbs are no good they go straight to the muscle and after the muscle is full if they keep adding carbs a person will start to bulk up with fat or. If you don't believe me start eating pizza with donut and sodas and cookies and fries and all these kinds of fat bulking foods. You'll know what am talking about.

  • @Gideon359

Oh, I DO know exactly what you are talking about... I've lived it. A diet full of carbs makes you feel slugish and tired ALL the time, not to mention its effect on your general mood... I have done very low carbs for a while and I have not only lost 10% of my body weight (no hunger - no deprivation) but my sleeping patterns, energy levels and general wellbeing have improved considerably. For me, low carb eating is now a way of life, not a "diet" to go on and off.

  • @MyMusiclover28 Hi. I totally agree with you. I have tried all types of diets including the raw food diet. I find that eating low carb is what works best for me. I have lots of energy and I can go hours without feeling a bit of hunger! on the other diets which are higher carbs, I get hungry very quickly and I feel so tired. I don't even crave sweets anymore! If I ever do, I just buy low carb ice cream bars. This diet is the one that makes me feel the best!

  • Low carb diets mean low insulin. Insulin helps make, maintain and store tissue mass, especially fat. That is why people with untreated insulin dependance diabetes lose weight, because they do not have enough insulin to give the body the ability to take up fats.

  • @hyperobjectivity

    Amen to that!

  • wtf.. the world had known for ages that protein makes u feel fuller for longer and I just spent an hour of my life to get to know something i had known already... jesus!

  • If you isolate just the fat, that is probably not enough to induce satiety. In order to truly satisfy the appetite, you need to have an ample amount of fat AND protein, which is what the Atkins diet provides. That is why people eat less on the program. It is due to the satiating effect of the combination of fat and protein. So if they reran this experiment but incorporated extra protein into the meal that they hid fat in, the participants would probably eat less.

  • This documentary was stupid, not once did they say the word insulin or diabetes.

  • @shelly8510 Your right. Gary Taubes, in his book, "Good Calories, Bad Calories" does a lengthy and elaborate scientific defense of low carb diets, and his core thesis, which has been well established, is that insulin is a fat regulatory hormone, and it also controls satiety. He combines information from nearly a century of dietary research. So the fact that a documentary doesn't mention the seminal role insulin plays in weight gain and appetite is stunning.

  • @alphacause

yeah im surprised they didn't mention insulin....

and the documentaries conclusion of why atkins works is "protein makes u feel full" lol....actually fat does that...when they preformed their experiment with people eating meals with fat secretly added they were FULL of carbs...lol

  • @Freedish911 Yes, that is a good observation. This is why there is a problem with most nutritional studies, and why the diet industry is so beset by contradictory advice. In order to do proper science, one must have proper controls, to rule out all other factors, so that one can isolate the true cause of why something happens. Most nutritional studies don't do this, and that is why we have the failed dietary hypothesis of the low fat/low calorie, which has failed so many people.

  • These small control groups really don't give a very accurate portrayal of what is "normal". When you have a test group of less than 100 people it's not a very good indicator in a study. For definitive answers they would have to do more than one study or use a lot more people.

  • Anyone who has ever been on ketosis, specially deep ketosis KNOWS that the apetite is suppressed once you enter this metabolic state , and on the whole day. youre ALREADY not hungry BEFORE meals. it has nothing to do with "protein making you filling full".

BTW im ny opinion, Atkins works because of the metabolic advantage ( more fat burned per calorie in deficit ) , the apetite control has little impact on the overall effects on the diet.

  • Please spare me the close-ups of people shoving food in their mouths!

  • thank you! I had to look away.

  • long term effect? cavemen were on the atkins diet...How long a study do they need? For me three stone later im not tired thin and feel fantastic. No more of that flamible cake crap for me!

  • @FrankSavages Well seeing as most pre-agricultural people had a life expectancy somewhere in their early thirties (not to mention the lack of university research departments in the paleolithic period) I think maybe it's not a bad idea to have a bit of modern data on the matter :)

    Congrats on the weight loss.

  • @FrankSavages Good point. We even see the efficacy of a protein rich/fat rich low carbohydrate diet in large populations. There are hunter gatherer tribes all over the world NOW that don't have access to carbohydrates, and subsist on a diet of meat, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. And even among the SEDENTARY elders who no longer hunt, they are slim and suffer no degenerative diseases. One doesn't need a degree in nutrition to understand this, one only need look at a National Geographic special.

  • Personally, I won't do the atkins diet because I do enjoy eating carbs, wheat bread, vegables, etc.. What I do is I cut back my calories significantly and up my protein to like 80-120 grams per day and I notice I eat a lot less. I get my protein from chicken, fish, beef, etc.. I'm able to lose as much weight at this way like I did when I did do the Atkins diet.

  • -Update-

I've hopped my ass back on the Low Carb diet, and I feel fucking great!

  • @PsychopathInFoil I tried Atkins diet and found it really boring and I was craving on carbs cause I cant give up my pasta! Because I was on low calories diet earlier and I knew it worked for me but I was tempted by the stories about Atkins diet I wanted to try. After cpl of days I couldnt look at eggs...:D back to low calorie diet ;) good luck with yours

  • HOLY CRAP how could they get it wrong so many times? Protein is NOT an appetite suppressant, carbs make you hungry! You don't eat more protein, you eat LESS carbs that aren't dietary fiber!

  • @VirginiaT1 protein does provide satiety

  • VirginiaT1, how could YOU get it wrong so many times?

A high-protein diet induces sustained reductions in appetite, ad libitum caloric intake, and body weight despite compensatory changes in diurnal plasma leptin and ghrelin concentrations

  • @AppleSouffle

I don't have a medical journal to back up my point, but I've had an eating disorder for years and have been in treatment for the last year. I learned from nutritionists that the key for feeling full longer and actually maintaining your weight has to do with protein but more importantly, eating good fats. It could be either one, I just feel like the fat component is really/most important

  • @VirginiaT1 forgot to add that in treatment we learn to stay away from simple carbs because they are burned so quickly you get hungry soon after, which for normal people means over eating, for someone with an eating disorder means binging

  • @VirginiaT1 Can u eat any source of fibre on atkins? I dont wanna be constipated all the time!

  • holy **** this is the best these people could come up with?? atkins is NOT a high protein diet it is a high fat , medium protein , low carb diet

a high protein, low fat diet is dangerous for your health

    carbohydrates make you more hungery

iv been on atkins for 5 years now it cured my illneses like obesity & IBS-D

also take the eskimos who eat a diet of up to 80% fat and have 0% obesity, 0% heart dieases, 0% type 2 diabetes

while 1 in 2 amaricans will die from a heart attack

  • well eskimos eat alot of fish fat...which is completely different from fats such as butter or vegetable oil or fat from a sirloin steak. eskimos do not sit at a computer all day. they are active. you cant compare that at all to americans.

and since when was the atkins diet a high fat diet? i thought it was just low/no carbs.

  • @r00sh Atkins diet strictly says that fats are essential for the diet to work. Atkins opposes a high protein low fat diet. There are however many spins on the Atkins diet and of course other low carb diets.

  • this documentary is so stupid and bias, carbs is sugar(CO2OH) CARBoHYDRAtes, explain to me why my cholesterol and blood pressure is OPTIMAL eating this diet, i even got my colon checked and it was healthy too

  • What are they talking about? Carbs make you full for a bit then your hungry again. Fat makes you much fuller per calorie. Try eating 500 calories of Meat ( a giant steak) or try eating 5 oreos.... both 500 calories, what you think will make you fuller....

  • Did they even do any real research before they made this? Read "Good Calories and Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes to get all the facts about the low carb diet. They didn't even metion insulin!!!! This program is under the illogical belief that you are fat because you eat too much.

Google Gary Taubes and get the facts straight.

  • the real test would be find foods very close in calories or just have each diet type eat 2k a day.. simple as that.. then see what is faster..

my op would be the low carb.. by far.

  • I think low fat is better at preserving muscle and giving you power by increasing your insuline levels, I don't think any one of the diets would work faster if they were both forced to eat 2k a day since weight is a function of energy in vs energy out.

  • @Chaaarge low fat is not better at perserving muscles its just if you have ate high carb for awhile you do not have much insulin receptors on your muscles in short you need to give your body a good 4 months of low carb eating to have enough time to produce enough insulin receptors on your muscles and then thus have insulin senseitive muscles like your suposed too have. and then have strong muscles while eating low carb

  • @VeoKenKs wouldn't the best diet be one that adjusts the amount of carbs to the amounts of anerobic activity though? Eat more carbs on the days you work out, eat less on your lazy days. There are so many studies out there to show that eating sugar directly after a workout speeds up recovery. however, I do believe there are benefits to low carb aswell now after doing some reading, but the key for low carb to work optimally is to eat a lot of veggies with your meats and oils. veggies have fiber

  • but they have the results of the "long term" effects of the convention diets ..... everybody is a fat bastard

i hate "scientists" who put down the diet that is essentially what the human species was MEANT to eat ... we're carnivores and we're herbivores .... not highfructose corn syrupivores!
