That's up there with my favorite Higgins' album, "Glass Bead Games." (Actually Clifford Jordan's, but Billy and Bill Lee (Spike's dad) deserve equal credit, along with Stanley Cowell.) Heresy to many, but this develops more cogently than some things I heard from Trane the last 2 years (after Elvin and McCoy). John's theological quest could become more urgent than the musical forms containing it.
yes !!!! it has to be a red sox fan to play something as amazing as this !!!!!!!! passing it along to all my friends !! thank you so much for posting/playing this !! was it hard not smile playing with the great brother billy higgins ??!!
Matter of fact...John Wood is/will always be a unsung pianist IMHO.What he plays is totally his own, yet you can hear eons of roots. Why wasn't something like this on ECM? Or even BlueNote? Now getting to that mastermind RAY PIZZI, the soprano sound is a fixture on these records. NOBODY,sounds like this. It' fresh, in tune, creative and honest. Historic and a lesson in how to create from ZERO!!! AMAZING !!!!!!!!
...There is a FREE LESSON here-if you listen closely....MOTIF, (repetition of a rhythm using DIFFERENT NOTES). A tool composers have used for centuries (ie: Beethovens 5th symphony ta-ta-ta-taaa) Motif works for any style of music, ESPECIALLY "free jazz" eliminating the random bullshit and non-essential stupidity. MOTIF connects your ideas together and makes it MUSIC...got it ?
All four musicians demonstrating total fluidity and expression of a very high regard. Wonderful motivic ideas developed and delivered with precision by Ray on soprano sax - and oh so soulful!
Billy Higgins provides the sense of rhythmic drive and energy that real jazz connosiours know him for. There is no other like the sound of that man behind the kit. Perfect comping from John Wood and Tony Dumas, a critical backbone to any jazz quintet of this style. Oh yea!
WHAT A SOPRANO SOUND. One of the very very best.
