Just heard her sing her first Ortrud in "Lohengrin" at L.A. Opera last weekend. She was incredible. It was not Ben Heppner's night, but she was on fire. By far the best voice on that stage. Glad to hear her singing Wagner now!

There is an interesting article written by Anne Midgette of the New York Times about the lack of really big voices in opera today, and why this is occurring. Ms. Midgette mentions Dolora Zajick as one of the exceptions, but that singers with really big voices also have big bodies, and are not considered quite as photogenic as slenderer singers. Also, the big voices to do not sound as "pretty" on recordings, so the big singers get left behind.
This is one of those voices that needs live in person encounter to make the full impression. It registers less well in recordings that don't fully realize its possibilities.
She has chosen to stay with the mezzo repertoire to great effect, while Violetta Urmana has moved to the soprano repertoire.
it would be interesting to hear her in soprano rep. violetta is doing fabulously (her verdi requiem is the best I've heard), but I can't say I approve of her singing odabella. that role is really high and best suited for a true dramatic coloratura soprano (aka no singer alive today that's for sure)
@Lindow It's her habit, the hand thing and it's not my favorite move of hers either. But shouldn't we forgive her for the "acting" you mentioned since this is not a show on stage, and just singing? I think she's usually terrific in acting (based on Aida 1998).
Wow. virtoz is so right. What a stunning instrument and technique. This woman has absolutely no audible register change. . . . I've heard people complain about the use of her chest voice for her lower notes, but I think it is absolutely perfect.
Oh, she sounds fabulous!!!

I first heard Dolora on the DVD of this gala and I am in love. And she seems such a lovely modest person too. :)

I think Anne Midgette is a hopeless "size queen."

Check out Luciana D'Intino's version of this, also on YouTube. D'intino, to my ear, is even better.

Come on people! Great voice, definately. But musicianship? Mediocre. And acting? Clutching one hand with the other? Let's be realisitc, shall we?
