Audacity is free. It's not as good as the pro solutions but if you just do hobby recordings of yourself it can produce acceptable results with some tweaking.

@bomberbinz i never mentioned windows 7. from MY experience my computers ran slow because of the programs i had installed and i don't mean by having them installed..i mean by actually USING them while doing other shit. Might be 'cause i'm a graphics designer and producer that i need multiple computers. One for music: Reason, Logic, Ableton & Cubase...Another for graphics: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash, Premier, After Effects. and 1 for my internet use. this way everything runs smoothly
