  • Let's put the convertible top down on my dad's '61 Galaxie (just washed and waxed), stop by A & W Root Beer and live the great American suburb life. Thanks for the great upload. Meet you on bikes later at the swing.

  • Pure Magic -- To think , this was recorded some 57 years ago -- Wow

I remember that I was only 5-6 yrs old and recall hearing this being played on the then major Rock & Roll Station in Boston WMEX AM 1510 by the legendary Arnie WOO WOO Ginsberg

  • This takes me right back to the mid fifties when my aunt took me to the cinema and this would always be played in the interval.Thank you for posting a truly fabulous piece of movie music

  • As it's been said, William Holden had to hire a choreographer to teach him how to dance for this scene. For his efforts, though, Holden insisted on being paid for STUNT WORK!

  • Simply one of the Most Gorgeous Songs ever Played. We thank you for this download. I never heard this Longer version either. The McGuire sister also did a very nice cover of this song. Love it!

  • beautiful sonq <3

  • Like most here I thought this was the sexist dance in any movie ever. What hasn't been said is that William Holden himself was reluctant to take the part because he did not know how to dance at all, and felt he'd make a fool out of himself. He worked with a choreographer on the film and as it was witnessed turned out to be one of the most seductive numbers in cinema history.

William Holden made it look like the most natural thing as if he always knew how to do it. An actor I miss very much.

  • That Dance in the Movie "Picnic" was very sexy... between William Holden and Kim Novak.. :)

  • A much simpler time... nostalgic and haunting.... one of the most beautiful scenes of all time... beautiful Kim Novak and handsome William Holden. You don't "hear" this music, you "feel" it.

  • @readingmass I agree with you 100% Was a Beauftiful Dancing Scene :) Sexy as Hell... lol lol

  • Wh00ps! My spelling error! Name is "George Duning." Just one "n."

If you want a good read, check out Andre Previn's "No Minor Chords. My Days in Hollywood."

  • I believe you'll find that George Duning was the composer of the "Picnic" motion picture music score. Morris Stoloff was the arranger and head of the music department at the studio. George Cates had a very popular arrangement of the song out on Coral Records. Lots of synergism in film music. Another example is Bernard Herrmann's score to "North by Northwest." The soundtrack also has music cues from production libraries and the studio's music archives in the movie. :)

  • @Glinkaism1 Thanks for the info...I corrected the notes.

  • @Nocaro Tricky stuff this composer attribution. :) You'll see "music by" on other movie credits. That doesn't mean that person was the composer. Some kind of politics. Some movies have the title music by a recognized composer. But then the production cues may be music owned by the studios or from production libraries. A composer friend of mine was surprised by the music credits when a particular movie came out. He said, "We're like the husband. We're the last to know." :)

  • @Nocaro I did have George Duning spelled OK after all. :) All's well that ends well. :)

  • @Glinkaism1 Thanks for the info...I corrected the notes.

  • @Glinkaism1 your right..george duning was the composer for picnic. duning also compose the music for the movie strangers when we meet with kim and kirk douglas. duning did alot when back in the 1940's also.

  • @diane6135 Thanks Diane. :) I believe there's a website for George Duning, too.

Those were great days for me when the Picnic movie came out. So much good music and movies at the time. It's rare to find a good movie nowadays.

But I want to recommend a wonderful movie I saw this week called "New Years Eve." It has many stars in interacting roles. Excellent writing. No cussing. For example. Robert Deniro plays a man dying who wants to live to watch the ball go down in Times Square.

  • Favorite scene of all time on the dance floor that night !

    Favorite soundtrack and movie

  • Sunday morning, summer of 1955, (AFTER MASS!) standing in front of our building in the 'old neighborhood' and this playing on my omnipresent portable radio.....

  • Sentimental for me to a point of almost unbearable longing for a time memorable in my youth when all the world seemed so right. One of the most unusual memories I have of this song was living in Baton Rouge when TV did not come on the air until 6am. I'd wake up as a youngster, turn on the TV and watch the "Indian Chief" pattern until the Silent Cartoons would come on at 6am. Moonglow & the Theme from Picnic was one of the songs I recall hearing from those early years of Television and my youth.

  • The most romantic and sexy dance ever done in cinema. Kim Novak at the Height of their physical beauty. William Holden was not the directors first choice cause he said he was to old for her but then relented and used Bill Holden. Watch the scene and you'll know that Holden wass far from being to old for her. A masterpiece in chemistry and romance and a moment caught on film that shows why today's smut is just poor filmakers trying to use shock to replace true romance and chemistry.

  • the two tunes are magic together. I wasn't allowed to see the movie-- too young. But the music has always been my definition of "Romantic". Could any two tunes work better together?

  • @injamaven You took the words right out of my mouth. And they compliment each other too: The first class jazz trio scatters the first melody elegantly then the lush string arranged second melody rises from nowhere--and then each group plays their song beautifully off each other. The arranger should have gotten an award. Heard this was a big hit when it came out.

  • the two tunes are magic together

  • @injamaven A crown jewel, for sure.

  • @beepollen1

Wow! Congrats on finally getting your computer back, Bee! Let JOY be unconfined! If it was in my power, I'd arrange a ticker tape parade! Hope you have a week that's as wonderful as YOU are, my friend! :)

  • @beepollen1

THANKS a lot, Bee, for the 'heads up" in regards to Nocro's channel! Mighty kind of ya, good buddy! CHEERS! :-)

  • Thank you for your great job of putting the shots together w/the music! This is THE most romantic scene in film history, IMHO. The music is beyond description.

  • @beepollen1

    HA !!!

    :)

  • @beepollen1

Well said & well put, my friend! I couldn't agree with you more! And yes, "Picnic" is a good movie...a VERY good movie! Wishing you & yours a happy & fun weekend! :-)

  • @beepollen1

Ha! I had the same wish when I was a teen in the 70's & many times since! A truly UNIQUE decade!

    :-)

  • @beepollen1

You're welcome! I was born in the mid-50's but of course was too young at the time to remember any of the decade. But I love so much of the music, movies, TV & other parts of pop culture that came about then. CHEERS! :-)

  • @beepollen1

This comment was flagged by spam! I have NO idea why. I totally agree that it's a good movie. One of the best flicks to come out of the 50's. CHEERS! :-)

  • I luv the effect that drummers get when they use the special metal drum sticks with peices of wire ( 50 ) to scratch and hit the snare drum to meke that sound this track has
