First, I wouldn't blame a police officer for using violence if they were really in danger. But this is obviously not the case during a peaceful protest (seen more particularly in the UC Davis demonstration).

Second, not all of the officers DID use violence. But when one starts, others may perceive it as a threat and help out after that. How are they to know that the first guy attacked wrongly? There's a huge crowd, and anything could have happened.

Back in Jakarta, there used to be illegal students demonstrators moving out of their approved area and jammed the traffic during peak period. It took the police forces for whole day to alter the traffic line, until midnight, the army started to remove reporters by force. Nobody knew what they did to the students as they broke all camera found. The students turned up in hospital with finger and ears cut off.
