First of all, wow. I had a great time doing this tutorial but I only have 1 problem. My flightpath is jerky at the splinecorners, a sudden rush to the other side. Does anyone have an idea on how to create a smooth path?
For those having trouble with rendering and only getting blocks instead of fluffy clouds, it's a glitch in Max 2011. Go to the particle vieuw and turn the postion object off and back on, it should work then.
i've try this....but that didn't work for me....idk what happened ....i put all the same number for the cloud material and use the same pic.....but when i render, all i can c is a bunch of solid color......of course those r translucent ......those r ain't no cloud.....any1 know what happened?
Hey there. First off I love this video. I'm glad you did a tut for it as It's just what I need for my logo animation. I followed the tut all the way to step 1.4 and then when I got to step 1.5..... I got stuck. When I drag my popcorn image into the material editor it doesn't look the same as yours on the pdf. Your popcorn appears on a cube where mine is smeared across a sphere. I'm very new to 3ds Max so is there something I could be missing?
@Blackshadow167: That shouldn't be a problem, it's just a matter of displaying the material on a sphere or on a cube. Carry on. :) Thanks for following the tut.
i cant figure out what you mean with the opacity and mitirial with the blob puicture ...do i use a bit map???......i need these clouds for a project im doing with a car i made in 3ds max i already made a video thats just showing them but now im going to animate it like on a roof or somthing
@dmanakell: The tutorial works for the scanline renderer right out of the box, but I've experienced faster render times switching to Mental Ray (though some people have reported the opposite). Thanks for checking it out!
Nice clouds and the plane was nice. I was wondering if you have more of this scene to see. I use 3d studio max alot because it's more user friendly than maya.
Thanks. No, there's not more of this scene, but I have another cloud/plane scene posted as "F117: Danger in the Clouds". You can find it if you click "More From: Jussing" on the right.
Hey, sorry, I restructured the web page and the tut isn't online there anymore. But if you google "3dtotal jonas ussing cloud tutorial", the first hit is a link to the tut on 3dtotal. :) Have fun.
I'm sorry, due to the complexity of some of the things in the tutorial, I skim really quickly over a lot of particle and lighting stuff. You should take some beginner's tutorials in those areas, and then try to come back to this tut. :) Good luck
Good clouds. I've been following this tutorial closely and I arrived to satisfacting results. But there are some issues since the particles are facing ones. When they collide one with other you can see that they are single "planes" that face to the camera. I'll be uploading a scene soon where I use another technique. Check my results, ok?
That's very weird about your MR problem! Try just switching off anti-aliasing, then. It's not really necessary, as all the billboards are antialiased anyway.
im stuck with the lighting the aircraft. just before u add in the extra lights. im totaly lost. could u give me a dumb manual for that bit??? i have my aircraft in and the ligting has f**ked it, alli can see is plane texture, what do i do next??
Well, the lights that you set to "ambient" to light the clouds, will not work for lighting the aircraft. You need to go to the "exclude" options for each cloud light, and exclude the aircraft. That will make the aircraft all black, so you need to make new lights, where you INCLUDE only the aircraft. Good luck!
@redfoxarts: lol, thanks, but a) I'm not being paid, and b) I don't know AfterBurn well enough to make tuts, so... trust me, it's really not that sad. :)
you can add a light to track your craft, top left of the screen the are 2 small boxes with dashes between them, click that and then click light and drap to craft, this will follow the craft !!.
Please check out my attempt at this tutorial in the video response! Took me ages to figure it out but was worth it in the end.

Det rigtigt flot! Men jeg tror godt at du kan få mere ud af at lave en mere advanceret rendering. Men Thumps Up! Det er imponerende skyer!

Jussing, thank you for your efforts to make this tutorial.
Some things: Speeding up double time with MR is not worth to try for me, for it takes hours instead of minutes.
And about the texture settings. World map = world XYZ? Otherwise I got these intersection you were talking about.
A little tweaking here and there and I'll get what you mean.
Cheers, Arnold
