I am at a motel, tonight, where the story of the "Dalton Gang" is hanging on the wall in my room...next to an old cowboy boot. This song just fits right in. Great video!
The early '70s in Northern California, by just happenstance, it seemed that every time I turned around, I was at another Eagles concert. Sometimes just small ones where I stood just feet from the slightly higher stage. One time Linda Ronstadt showed up and sang Desperado with them. I just took it as a matter of course. But the best was pulling into the ghost town of Bodie in the easter Sierra high desert while playing Desperado Reprise at sundown. Those were some times....
@agora1955 No, unfortunately. I do recall that indoor venues usually had signs forbidding photo taking. But concerts goers then were there more for the music and party rather than to capture stuff to put on youtube... totally different times, amazingly different. I did take a few photos at a Grateful Dead concert in 1974, but of friends, not the bands! I did take a few photos (no good) of the 1977 LZ concert in Oakland, CA. I think that's it, though. By then I was a medical volunteer...
@agora1955 One thing that really stands out to me is how nasty everything is now compared to then. I attribute it to the lingering Punk ethic, but even more so, the rise of Rap and that genre. Meanness replaced that universal kindness that you just sunk into at most concerts or social situations. You can only find it today at a Dead concert, or a closely linked event. Shows like South Park that criticize shallowness while actually promoting it at the same time. "Jew Fro,"....etc., .
@agora1955 I wouldn't want to correct you, really there's nothing to correct. Your opinions are your valid opinions. I look in on media just to be up on what is going on out there, that's all. The bar has dropped several rungs down since 1976, I would say.
"The Last Resort" ended up being one of my favorite songs by them. In fact, I came to see it as the final statement from that band. Not much more to say.
I'm not a lockstep liberal, but ecological concerns are universal for the wise.
@agora1955 Well, you are an optimist. I don't know that I could call myself one. Those kind people are far outnumbered, and they usually are also into self-defeating thinking and politics as well. No place to go into this, but I like the saying;
"The pessimist sees the glass half empty. The optimist sees the glass half full. The realist knows that soon, there will be another glass to wash."
@agora1955 yet some will say that "hell, I'm drunk...oh well..." what a great album...31 years ago today I lost one of my best friends that taught me how to play guitar and this morning Dino is with me laughing out loud wondering where the pick for his "guit-fiddle" is....
DoolinDalton. I wondered about the title. Bill Doolin, Bill Dalton. Most of the action took place in OK. Bill Dalton lived in CA as a well-to-do man but evidence puts him in OK before the shootout. Bill Doolin was regarded as a Robin Hood of the West; he usually got help escaping. Daltons' didn't really know which side of the law they were own. First being deputy US marshalls as their brother Emmitt; then to crime. I know most of the places named because I lived in OK for 16 years.
@luvtotruck Well, I can tell you that really isn't so. One only saw it occasionally. And no one called it a "Jew Fro." That is a new appellation like "ginger" and other less than high brow terms that get by because they are not anti-black or some such.
There was a recording of it on here ages ago, with a sound copyright thing. Glenn was on harmonica, Bernie on acoustic and Felder on electric. I dont know how they'd have managed on this with only two guitarist before Felder
The Eagles sing about Americana yesterday and today. The genre of songs about life in the west America makes them uniques to me. There are other people that cover American life but nobody does it like the Eagles. Musically one of the best bands around in absolute terms. I'm glad those guys made peace with one another because their later music would have been lost to us.
Ty from a generation once above the 70's. You are now and will always be the best of my early lifetime. given a choice, I would never grow old. Never stop living though The best my generation's music. thank you!
The only way i discovered the Eagles was through my dad, without him i wouldn't be the man i am today, he turns 60 next year and by god i'll always be eternally grateful for the love and support he's given me over these past years!!!!!!
"Well the towns lay out across the dusty plains, like graveyards filled with tombstones waitin 4 the names" HAY EVERYBODY!!! If you ever are looking for ur western fix, check out Deadwood south dakota, a western town based on gambling and mining. My parents took me.... ive changed.
My name is Duelyn Dalton. I remember hearing this song as a lil kid, this song gives me chills every time i hear it. <3 love my mom for everything, this reminds me of her too, r.i.p <3
@Duelyn Thank you so much for remembering your Mom. You are rare and very precious. She is close, not gone nor "resting in peace" ... she is smiling and she is 'with' you every day.
That is what is "love conquors all" really means. Bless you. (from a Mom).
I love this song, maybe the only proper country song that the Eagles ever did, but the harmony between the harmonica and guitar at the beginning is absolute beatutiful
For some reason this song chokes me up. I have a well worn Tshirt that has cats dressed up as cowbys and they were called the James-Younger gang and their names of each gang member under each cat.
@TheKatynadine My song is "The Girl I Left Behind Me" from the Civil War. My husband had it played at his funeral, and although I sharn't have a funeral I hope somebody plays it for me.
Great old Eagles western -jam.! Some late 70's memories flooded back to mind. of raising the dust down a favorite dirt road, graduation summer!! Passin,' a fat possum belly,..then the timeless "POP"'s of another couple of cold ones--- outta that ice chest "strategically placed" so she could reach back there, through the slidin' back glass window, and fish em out of the ice.,and of course, sneaking a peek at her ass cheeks in them cut-offs, while she's a gettin the beers! Easy listening!
Only thanks to this song i've been to see the west out of my window for many years..dreaming to ride wild and free.. Believe me : it's magic : I live in MILAN , ITALY
Anche in Italia ogni tanto c'è qualcuno che si ricorda di questo mitico gruppo, troppo sottovalutato oggi. Ho 16 anni, ma grazie a mio padre, AMO GLI EAGLES.
Im 14, But boy I Love This song yah its not my time but classics are the best my brother and dad got me into this as a kid and i still love this music till the day i die!
If you listen to the whole album, it tells a story which can be taken 2 ways. Either the song of the life of an old west gunfighter, Or the story of a man that joins a band and becomes famous but its too much for him to handle.
@josh83219 great analysis...My take is that by the late 1890's/early 1900's time was passing you by...whether you were the James/Younger/Dalton gang...or the Earps/Doc H....just my intereptation..

@adsy999 one of the songs that made me decide to play guitar...still play this to this day....even if no one knows it...use it as a lead in to Desparado...which ppl know... but to me you cannot play one without the other!

@deaddoc You are so right, those were indeed such different times, but the memories
are the most important and the Eagles are so much a part of my youth that it would be
impossible to erase those amazing feelings. But I am sure you know exactly what I mean.

@deaddoc I really can not offer a comment on South Park etc as I don´t waste my time
on such superficial brainless nonsense. I do agree with you that this Planet has become
frigid. But not all is lost, there are wonderful people who care and do try to make a little difference
and I think Glen Frey is a fighter as regards ecology as he has been trying for years to
stop developers misuse some land near his ranch. Correct me if I am wrong.
