Harris is right that Chopra should be embarrassed speaking about theoretical physics to a group like they had assembled that night. However, that lack of specialized study (hopefully a Ph.D. in the field) never stopped Harris from writing about religion or philosophy like a specialist. He writes about Islam in a way that is appallingly simplistic and gets into philosophical arguments that would embarrass a first-year undergraduate.

Physics is an exact science and while theoretical physics does involve in dealing with not proven phenomena, theoretical physicists still abide by the proven laws. You see the appeal to authority does have logical validity ONLY when discussing things with a right or wrong answer. Neurology, physics etc are disciplines that have real answers. Religion is nebulous, philosophy is nebulous.....the appeal to authority is greatly diminished in it's case. There are people right out of the box that are good at philosophical matters. Nobody has ever just known neurology or physics without education. That is why you cannot view the areas as equal peers.

I don't worship them more than a average person worships at the alter of their favorite sports team.
I am interested in learning about belief systems, and what they have to offer. I guess i am a fan.

Harris is right that Chopra should be embarrassed speaking about theoretical physics to a group like they had assembled that night. However, that lack of specialized study (hopefully a Ph.D. in the field) never stopped Harris from writing about religion or philosophy like a specialist. He writes about Islam in a way that is appallingly simplistic and gets into philosophical arguments that would embarrass a first-year undergraduate.

You see the appeal to authority does have logical validity ONLY when discussing things with a right or wrong answer. Neurology, physics etc are disciplines that have real answers. Religion is nebulous, philosophy is nebulous.....the appeal to authority is greatly diminished in it's case. There are people right out of the box that are good at philosophical matters. Nobody has ever just known neurology or physics without education. That is why you cannot view the areas as equal peers.
