Hahaha great!! :D Chaplin and Keaton were both phenomenal actors. I was going to make a Chaplin video to one of Jackson's faster songs but I wasn't sure which one.
Just fabulous; I grew up watching Chaplin and the likes of Buster Keaton & the Keystone cops because they were always a part of Saturday morning kids tv in the UK during the 60's and early 70's. Chaplin was a genius, if you read his story about how he reinvented himself for Hollywood - he was such an interesting man - and he still makes me laugh today. Thank you so much for sharing this my friend and yes I can see some of Michael's moves in there L.O.V.E xxx
The words most blatant pedophile Michael Jackson also stole the moonwalk from Marcel Marceau. That`s why I don`t get the fanatacism with MJ..Besides him being a blatant pedophile, everything he did was ripped off from other people, James Brown especially, and most of the hits he had were written by other people. It`s crazy, I really don`t get the fascination with that guy.,
@JamesTKirkCobain you don't get it. you MUST be able to see the talent he had. Marcel "stole" from Chaplin. Chaplin "stole" from his Vaudeville idols. every artist is inspired by someone else but what makes them great is when they are able to make it into their own thing and take it to another level. you can think what you want about any of em but you cannot deny they all had an incredible talent that cannot be re-created.
part of that same clip seemed to show Fatty Arbuckle. I thought I'd got the "complete Keaton shorts" via Amazonm, with one DVD of the set full of Arbuckle/Keaton shorts, but that clip's new to me - it seems there's still some more bits to add!
Fantastic. Michael new how to choose a source of inspiration. Charlie Chaplin would be happy to know that Michael looked upon to him. Amazing. I love them both.
When I found out that Mike was kinda' old fashioned and liked people like Chaplin, just like me, I was really happy, 'cus then we have more in common :D

Yes MJ did. it seems that many think I'm saying this is an actual moonwalk. I wrote "kinda"- He is walking forward. I also said it's a comedy sketch. I did it months b4 MJ died - I can see moves MJ got inspiration from (as you said) in CC's dancing ( not necesarily this but who knows for sure?). - Maybe this inspired someone somewhere and it was *part* of what eventually turned into the Moonwalk and maybe it didn't.
It is what it is. It's not meant to be spot on serious. Thanks for commenting!
MJ didn't take moonwalk from CC. He just had very very good dance teachers. Some of the teachers teached moonwalk to MJ. That's how moonwalk was done. And thats not even close to moonwalk.
I believe the same thing. MJ is known to have loved CC. It is no stretch to think that he watched him quite a bit. MJ was a genious at dance IMO. Why is it so hard to believe he picked up moves or inspitation for moves from CC. I have a lot of footage of CC. I can see some subtle moves that I have little doubt MJ incorporated into his dancing. ~cg
I am a fan of both Chaplin and Jackson, and hearing that Michael also loved Chaplin was a big relief, I feel closer to him by that :') always in our hearts Mike and Charlie
It happens that i 've just seen The Chaplin Film with R. Downey JR as Chaplin, and was stunt by the amount of things Chaplin and MJ shared...How they related to their job, their creativity, sensitivity, lucidity. Realized that Chaplin was the first to be called "the most famous man in the world". Had to deal with unfair scandals, incomprehension, judiciary humiliation, exile...
The only problem is you cropted this way too much (and hint hint: too obviously)... and can you really honestly call the true "non-edited" chaplain move, a Moonwalk????
It was meant to be "cropted" in an obvious manner. If you take a look at what I have written I put moonwalk in quotations or question marks. Please see my full description of the video. I made this well before MJ died (take a look at when I uploaded it). I hold MJ in very high regard as a performer and dancer. I also hold CC in very high regard as did MJ. Thanks for your comment. I hope you enjoyed the video. ~cg
Thank you very much! That was just what I needed after I watched a few clips of yesterday's funeral which made me sooo sad and the sadness does not seem to go away... but we have to smile though or hearts are aching... Thanks for this clip. It made me smile. All my love goes to Michael and every single person that is feeling pain for this bis loss. rip LOVE YOU MORE MICHAEL!!!
ha! you cheated!!! if anything you could have used footage from THE GOLD RUSH (1925) when Charlie "walks against the wind" (that isn't really that strong)... when Black Larsen Opens the door to tell him to get out. THAT was pantomime....AND an example....for instance look up SHALAMAR: Jeffrey Daniel Moonwalk....and THEN see what i mean. ...it's HERITAGE
holy shit. I'm a big Charlie Chaplin fan. Not like a real fan and know everything but I enjoy his movies very much. And I've seen almost all of them I think. And I never noticed. lol. Maybe I should have just played some music.

Well done! I have always had a very special place in my heart for Charlie Chaplin. Even way back when racism was the accepted & encouraged norm, he spoke out against it and its ills.
The man was so passionate, compassionate, talented and wise.
Just like the young boy who would emulate him some 50 years later.
RIP Charlie & Michael. When I get to heaven, I hope to be able to grab tickets to one of your vaudevillian tours!
YW. No they did not meet. MJ wanted to buy a home Charlie Chaplin used to own but was denied. Michael loved Chaplin. He was inspired greatly by him. If you search the net you will see photo's of MJ impersonating CC .
Chaplin was a performer who for about 3 decades was known as the most famous man in the world, yet some 25 years after his extraordinary fame began, he found himself up on charges for a sex scandal he denied until his dying day, and then about a decade later he found himself (literally in his case) cast out and his career ended in the country that had made him famous - America. I wonder if MJ ever realized how closely his career would parallel Chaplin's? To MJ & CC -forgive us. We were fools.

WoW! How eeriely interesting! CC was truely a genius, but I didn't know about how his career ended. I do know that Michael loved the song "Smile, even though your heart is breaking...", written by the one and only Charlie Chaplin. i saw a very intersting bio on comedians on PBS the other day. It featured Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton Laurel & Hardy and even the comedic partnership of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin. Great stuff!

Yes he did say that. I guess we can't expect people to know some of these things. MJ even dressed like CC in a video I have seen. It's on YT. Thanks for the comment! ~cg
marcel marceau was only 12 when chaplin made this film. he was born in 1923, the movie "modern times" was released in 1935. i'd say marcel got the inspiration from chaplin
You've got to be kidding. Right? I know you are. LOOK AT CHAPLINS FEET...he moves heel, toe, heel toe. Michael is SLIDING his feet across the floor. We cann all do what Chaplin did...they call it a field sobriety test when you're stopped by the police for drunk driving...heel, toe, heel, toe. That is NOTHING how the moonwalk actually works. Wow!!
Actually Michael Jackson did not use this as the inspiration for the moonwalk because Michael Jackson was not the originator of the dance move. The backslide (which Jackson called the moonwalk) was a common hip-hop dance move for more than a decade before Jackson popularized it. Though whoever did originate it may well have used this as an inspiration. But more likely Chaplin was using a common mime called walking against the wind and that was the inspiration for the dance move.
Thanks for your post. But I respectfully do not neccesarily agree. Just because others did the backslide before MJ does not mean he din't watch and learn a bit from many different sources on how he may choose to do the backslide or moonwalk. BTW Michal Jackson was a big fan of Charlie Chaplin. ~cg
It was made for entertainment purposes. Although Chaplin appears to do seomething akin to the backslide or moonwalk the rest is just for fun. There are a few other moves that strike me as a little similar but maybe that's just me. Thanks for posting. ~cg
the origin of "voguing". Also check out Bill Bailey for the moonwalk.

The moonwalk was recorded as early as 1955.
Michael says he got the moonwalk
from kids he saw dancing on the street.
Then he got choreographers to
teach him how it is done.

We all know Michael Jackson is the best but he learned to do the "moonwalk" aka the backglide from poppin' taco...an 80's sensation dancer

no....
michael inspiration is charlie chaplin.....
he said "everybody knew that charlie chaplin is genius, and he's my inspiration"
muhammad123456123456 2 years ago 2
Yes he did say that. I guess we can't expect people to know some of these things. MJ even dressed like CC in a video I have seen. It's on YT. Thanks for the comment! ~cg

Charlie Chaplin got this from Marcelle Marceau.
yumpop2313 2 years ago
marcel marceau was only 12 when chaplin made this film. he was born in 1923, the movie "modern times" was released in 1935. i'd say marcel got the inspiration from chaplin

Wow!!

deestree, Type in Michael Jackson's Most Funniest Moments Part 1. Look at 0:41. He is dressed as Charlie Chaplin. He really admired him. ~cg

It just looks a little bit like it. Look at the way Chaplin prances a lil' after he does his thing. Kinda like MJ IMO. All in good fun! ~cg

~cg

My description makes mention of the origins of the moonwalk. Please give it a look if you haven't. Thanks ~cg

1:44 definitely has some elements common to the moonwalk. The rest of the video he appears to be simply shuffling backwards.
reggad1125 2 years ago
It was made for entertainment purposes. Although Chaplin appears to do seomething akin to the backslide or moonwalk the rest is just for fun. There are a few other moves that strike me as a little similar but maybe that's just me. Thanks for posting. ~cg
