My guess is oak would be a bit too hard. Generally, the softer woods work better. You could get most woods to work, but if the wood is not ideal it becomes very hard work and you'll end up getting exhausted before you get a fire.

Unfortunately this is one of those arguments where nobody knows the answer for sure. Which is a pity, because I love an argument and I love to be right. I think the consensus view, though, is that the modern languages likely to be the most similar to Latin would be Italian and Romanian, and that one could look to their pronunciation for clues.

Hence the letter "I" having a long or short "-ee" sound and the U a long or short "-oo".

Ironically, in Latin, Penis would be Pen-iss.

@ROBwithaB Well, let me entertain your hypothetical. If you do indeed believe that "Penis" is the right way to pronounce it, than you are in an unimaginably small minority. Some have told me that it is an alternate pronunciation. However, 99.999% of the time, people go with Py-nus. And so they pronounce the family, "Py-Nace-E-A" or an example word Pine. Unless of course, you pronounce Pine "Peen." Furthermore, Py-nus is correct because a vowel falls after the consonant. It makes the "i" long.

I think it depends on where you are and how you learned your Latin. Let us take the following sentence as an example: "Ubi uxor ibi domus" (A tenet of Roman Dutch law in which the domicile of a man is assumed to be that of his wife.)

Most people who learned classical Latin would pronounce it "oobi ooksor eebee dohmooss" (or close enough).

According to your theory, It would become eyebee. For that matter, domicilium would become doe-meye-sigh-lye-umm.

I think it all depends on where you are. In South Africa, our schooling system was based on the Victorian "private" schools. Many of our academics would have studied at Oxford, Cambrdge, etc. This filtered all the way through the system.

In addition to speaking English differently, we also speak Latin differently, vis-a-vis our American cousins.

I think it's weird, and kinda cool, that everyone seems to have their own "correct" way of pronouncing things, when nobody knows for sure.

It's just what I was taught. Regardless, it's easy to figure out what you are talking about by context.
