I really need to do this to the one I got today. A guy gave it to me for free and it is SUPER beat up. What exactly did you do? Did you stain it ? or...? I'm not really sure..lol
First, if you are satisfied with your work, more power to you!
I will state that there is nothing wrong with staining a guitar if as long as it gives the guitar the look you are after. There are plaenty of great guitars out there, many professionally made, which are stained and look and play great.
Ok just to clarify... It was a Free guitar... I don't care enough nor do I have the money to have it professionally done... I realize I didn't do it expertly... That was not the point... It looked 100x better after I was done than when I got it.. Sorry if you were looking for an example of a professional restoration/refinishing or whatever... This isn't it.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but everything was done wrong. First it was not a restoration, just a refinishing. Second this should have been sprayed or French polished with real shellac not cheap harware store fake shellac. Third you never ever ever stain a Guitar. Luthery is an art, look at more videos before you damage another instrument. It would cost around $500.00 dollars to have a real luthier undo the damage you have done which is more than the Guitar is worth.
I've never done it before, so I just used whatever, really. It would have worked out fine if I had only done 1 or 2 coats instead of 3-4... the last coat messed it up a little...
Do you have any experience with this type of thing? What would you recommend for next time?
Thanks for the comment. I have no idea how old the guitar is... a friend gave it to me and he had it for over ten years... and he got it used at a garage sale. I couldn't find a date on the label.
I used a spray varnish remover that worked nicely, but I didn't know about spray laquer... that sounds like it would work a lot better than a brush.
STOP WASTING PEOPLE"S TIME AND GET RID OF THIS!!!

If you know what you are doing
a brush will do a better job.

Why did you use a brush? Just curious.

1. because I already had it
2. because I didn't know any better

Don't get me wrong the guitar came out nice!!!
Just wondering. I've seen a bunch of guitars spray painted. How old is the guitar? I'm refinishing an old guild D-4. Using Spray laquer.
Thanks for posting this guitar project.
