I know he only played one season in Denver but why isnt there more footage of him with the Broncos? I have one game - I think it is his last game - against the Patriots and he had 100 yards if I am not mistaken.
I'm a huge cowboys fan, born & raised in texas. I've always loved dorsett as a back because he was so smooth & fast. I wore 33 in high school & at j.c. because dorsett was my favorite athlete. I met him in person at a collectors show in san francisco a few yrs back and this cat was about 5'9 and the nicest dude in the world. We talked for about 15 minutes, got a photo with him and he autographed my helmet. Just plain classy & down to earth.
I have always been a fan of Dorsett. And it's no doubt he had some sick acceleration off the line of scrimage. Also, he ran north and south with serious conviction, but could shake and juke defenders outta their socks. Great Job Tony
4:58-5:05...lol,that was just to unfair,lol....afterwards, the inside d-line was probably hoping for a rules change not allowing a running back to reverse it back out once crossing the line of scrimmage, thus preventing the always embarrassing "missed tackle flop",lol.
Wow..Dorsett the first player i really remember watching as a kid as ten or eleven yr old in 80/81...i recall a game against Green Bay on CBS were Tony just destroyed the Packers run defense...i can only imagine how Bill Walsh would have used Dorsett in his prime on those 80's Niners teams...scary.
The great offensive line called "The Magic Irish" were a key factor for Dorsett success, Landry was genius to pick linemen, from the champion team with Jimmy Jhonson 3 of the 5 offensive linemen were Landry's picks (Kevin Gogan, Nate Newton and Mark Tuinei)
@tiburochako true, because the key to letting the ball out of the quarter backs hands starts off with o line and there blocks. tony dorsett is one of my favorite RBs right next to emmit smith.

Even though I'm a Redskin fan I believe Tony Dorsett is 1 of the Top 10 RB of all time with awesome speed & a excellent inside runner especially for a 190 LBS RB.
Is it me or are there NO running backs that run like this today? or even in the last 20 or 30 years? I mean with the fluidity, grace, smoothness, combination of speed and quickness that Dorsett had. He just looked good in the process of simply running - like watching a high end sports car on a closed track.
5. rushed for over 1000 yds in first season in nfl
6. nfl rookie of the year
7. won super bowl in rookie season
add it all up & i believe you have the greatest running back ever! no disrespect to emmitt, he was awesome too, but tony is & always will be the man!!! TD, TOUCHDOWN TONY DORSETT #33!
@playmayker88 That is the historical fact that I have always been amazed to NEVER hear ANYWHERE. Dorsett gets left out of the greatest running back conversations all the time and this is never brought up.
NFL Network placed him at #7 on the top 10 all time Dallas Cowboys. That is too low for him. He should be at least top five - and ahead of Emmitt Smith.
Did you notice when he scored a TD, like many of the great RBs back then, he just dropped the ball as he passed the goal or an occasional quick spike as he entered the end zone. No, " Hey is the camera on me, I got this dance I've been practicing for a week I want to show off". He acted like he expected to be standing in the end zone.
This video is about Tony Dorsett and all due respect to Tony and his accomplishments. He is definitely in the top running backs of all time. HOWEVER, I have to get on the Walter Payton band wagon. One statistic stands out above all for the long hall of his career. HE MISSED 1 GAME!! Incredible!
I concur with you. TD was the man. I still believe he would have been the difference in Super Bowl 13 if Coach Landry would have used him the way he did in the season. If he used Dorsett the correct way, Drew Hill, Tony Hill would have had Swann/Stallworth numbers. I believe that.
Yeah, I usually have a hard time second guessing Tom Landry. Id be willing to put money on the fact that Landry knew Dorsett was a great matchup against the Steelers D, style wise. Landry showcased that mismatch in the 1st Qtr to set up a lot of play action and draws, as well as straight ahead running. Whatever he wanted really. I believe he was going to show TD in the 1st, and secure the game with him in the 4th.
Whatever Landry was thinking, he screwed up by not using Dorsett more - point blank. Landry could out smart himself sometimes and I think he did just that in Super Bowl 13
With the league the way it is today, think about what Dorsett could be doing if he was playing now. The offenses are so much more wide open - he would be a terror in the passing game - screens and hitches, even deep balls with his blazing speed.
TD Would be the most dangerous guy in the NFL. He was back then and he'd be 10 times as dangerous today. And they thing Chris Johnson is dangerous????? And he is, but TD today...man he'd make him look like a choir boy!
Oh, I had to download this clip! This is an excellent demonstration of superior and super-human intelligence. In these clips we see a man who had total control over his neuro-motor capaabilities. Tony Dorsett must be a master chess player. He could see his would be tacklers moves and counter them with multiple counter-moves like a Master chess strategist.
With these type of averages you would have to have a lot of long TD runs.
And I'm certain that his carries are much lower than the other great backs of the NFL. Hell give him Emmit's carries and the mark would probably be 30,000
But I wanna find out yds per TD avg & compare his avg to any of the great RB's in history. HE may have had only 77 Rush TD's, but I dont think anyone did it any more exciting&fluid as TD
Sidenote: As great as Ladanian Tomlinson is, &as long as he's been in the limelight&we've been hearing his praise, you realize he still hasnt passed Tony Dorsett on All-time ydg list? Still needs 400yds.
I notice this fact everytime I watch those bias ass video's.
How can you have the greatest Runs in the NFL without showing the footage of Tony Dorsett. Damn! I wish Tom Landry would have turned him loose more than he did. It is hard to believe some with that type of explosiveness didn't score but 77 TD's in his HOF career.
We can all look back (with almost unanimous certainty ) and say Tony woulda set unbreakable records if he had been given the ball more.
only 77 TD's..
but look at the type of TD's those were. I dont think any RB has ever had more 50+ TD's in a career. Break it down further - more 60+. 70+. 80+... the guy was amazing and the NFL ought be ashamed for not showcasing that history of rare talent!
I think if Landry would have gave him the ball 22-25 times a game, NFL history would have been radically different! Check out Tony's game logs.. A lot of times he only got 10, 14, 18 carries in a game...yet had huge averages sometimes. Look at the 78 Superbowl vs Steelers. Tony was ripping them up, and I think he ended the day with only 16 carries (96yds).
I guess we can credit Landry with creating the Dorsett mystique! (contd)
I couldnt agree more - I am always irritated how little you see Dorsett in those classic NFL Films. THe 99 yard run is all you ever see. You may see his 77 yard run in which Darrell Green tackles him if the topic is how Green took a great angle to "catch" Dorsett. Other than those to plays, you never see TD.
I remember plenty of other times where he tried his ass off to catch Tony, but couldn't and simply gave up on the plays as Dorsett scored. They forget that the Cowboys played them twice a year, and there were plenty off battles between them. That was the ONLY time he got Tony and needed that angle to get him then. Darrell was a good player who made a name for himself off that play as a rook.
the 1st highlight on this video, vs. Patriots.. this was a great run. You can see it in real speed with the call of the game by Frank Gifford and Co.
Look up Tony Dorsett MNF tribute
He breaks up the field and not only outruns the secondary, but he CB's had a running start in FRONT of Tony and he swung it outside and outran the angle. Awesome!
yea ur rite but also this was also a long time ago where the game was less strict they threw bombs to runnning backs it was more like a pickup game. im sure peterson would avg 7-8 yards a play back then
Same as Peterson??? Not even close. A. Peterson is more of a bruiser, and I have doubts that he'll last very long.
Dorsett is probably the most naturally instinctive running back that ever played football next to Barry Sanders. But Tony was much faster. Fitting that he owns the longest run in NFL history that can NEVER be broken....
All I hear is how Darrell Green caught Tony from behind. #1 Darrell had an angle, #2 there were so many other times when I saw TD explode away from Darrell on 40-50 yard TD runs, and Darrell simply just could NOT catch him. Darrell was a rookie, and TD was a 6 year vet buy that time.
I have the entire game on tape. I also saw th play when it happened. I thought Gren had an angle then and I think Green has an angle every time I look at the tape. It chaps my hide when Green in enshrined for this play - its bogus.
Lets give Darrell his props but I have seen way to many games when he was directly behind Tony and could never catch him, the same way he could never catch Ron Brown of the then, LA Rams.
Green was a good corner and I'm in NO WAY disputing his great speed. But when I look at him chase down Eric Dickerson, it is a big difference. He did not have an angle on Eric, he just flat out ran him down. He would have never caught Tony like that. Can you imagine him catching Tony on that play against the Atlanta Falcons. TD was faster that Eric Dickerson.
The most graceful, explosive runner of all time. Look how low his center of gravity is, and how fluid the locomotion. I much prefer this style to the upright, hard-pumping shifty runners like Hester and Peterson. Of all his amazing runs, his own personal favorite begins at 4:58.
I've always said it and I say it now: I love Emmitt. He has the yardage, the 3 rings, and will make the HOF on the first shot. But #33 was a USDA grade A certified and bonifide homerun hitter. Felix Jones, if he stays healthy, reminds me of Tony D.
Well they messed around and did the show with just all nfl players for a couple seasons, man they had a group that featured td and of all people herschel walker, when they got to the 100 yd dash it was a done deal, td smoked everybody by at least 20 yds... if anybody has got video please post thanx
Anybody remember the show superstars, in the early eighties? It started out with pro athletes from different sports pitted against each other in olympic type events.
Funny thing cause TD never really set records in highschool, the hopewell high all time leading rusher is former penn state linebacker and current buffalo bill,Paul Posluszny who was a senior and on the field that night in 2001 as TD gave a speach when the school named the field in his honor.
You can go to Youtube, Darrell Green Tribute to see that play.
It looked like TD was running @ 3/4 speed and wasn't expecting anyone to be with him until he looked and saw Green, but it was too late to make a move. Green was a rookie, and TD had been in the league for 6-7 yrs.
you can also see that Green started running up field with a 10 yards headstart from the opposite side of the field and was completely hidden from Dorsett's vision. Dorsett was making guys miss wile Green was flat out running ina straight line across the field with a great angle. He deserves credit for the angle more than the spped to catch TD. I think TD was just as fast. THat side of the field was muddy according to Tex SChramm as well
@ 4:00 you can see TD break out and this play reminds me alot of the Darrell Green play, where this defended had an angle and barely made a shoe string tackle on TD. This play is shown on TD #1but is cut short here. Check it out. But Darrell did rund down Eric Dickerson, he came up from directly behind him. But TD was much more explosive than ED. I mean it is hard to see anyone catching him from behind on this video @2:30 against the Falcons. I clocked him @4.10 from the 40-in
@ 2:35, That is just sick! TD had a gear that most running backs could only dream of. You can see that for a split second both corners think they had an angle, and in a blink it is gone. They both have an "oh S**t!" moment and try to catch up, but there is no way that is going to happen.
This is some awesome footage. Thanks for the memories! I love how #88 is always in the picture on Dorsett's long runs, making key blocks.
One thing that is missing in this compilation is his 1983 highlights, which includes the famous 77 yard run on MNF in which he was brought down by rookie Darrell Green, and a few other long touchdown runs. Oh well, can't have every thing I guess...
TD is one of the only guys in NFL history who could run away from guys with angles on him. Name one guy in the NFL today who can do what you see in thie video.....0
And damn! 99 yards and a half vs the Vikings that was sick! I'm from Florida and I love Emmitt Smith but he couldn't run like this guy. Emmitt was caught from behind all the time. If Dallas had given TD more carries its no telling how many more yards he could have amassed in his career.
Danm! He shakes Darrell Green right out of the screen!
Look at how he runs away from all the Atlanta Falcons at 2:29-2:40. I was clocking him on the last 40 yards, it was some where in the 4.20 second range...WOW! And that is in full football uniform. This guy was awesome!
he shows all the tools - Vision, stop n go, acceleration on a dime, and pure top speed.
He accelerated passed the LB s after juking in the line.. and turned on some nasty speed up thru the secondary.. outrunning TWO CB's who both had angles on him... outran them by a mile too.
Tony was still out running most of the league in 1985.......in the 44-0 blowout vs the Bears, tony ripped a 20+ yd run with ease against that Bears D.
And theres a Giants game vs Dallas in 87 where Tony looked plenty fast. Still had the moves and was still dangerous.
He was in no way "shot" in 88 with Denver. That system with the Broncos wasnt complimentary to his game.
yes, with Denver, Dorsett was the hunt for the rushing title @ the half way point of the season. A couple 100 yard games, one on Monday night when he surpassed Jim Brown (wasn't Tony great on Monday Night?!)
Then Reeves decided to get away from running him. He finished the year with only 181 carries, but still ended up with over 700 yards.
I wish they would have given him another 75 carries at least. He woulda went over 13,000 and ended his career with a vintage 1000 yd season.
yeah he had his longest run as a Bronco agaisnt the Pats.. 26 yds
I remember Dick Enberg calling that game. They were just talking about Dorsett before that play , saying he had definitely lost a step and how no one will forget his days in the silver and blue... then Dorsett breaks a 26 yarder up the middle
Enberg says" Now thats the Tony Dorsett we've come to know and love."
I have that entire game on DVD and I recal Enberg saying Dorsett was a disappointment at the beginnig of the game. TOny D went over 100 yards and scored 1 TD
Over 700 yards and nearly 4 yards a carry at that age in Denver - which wasnt that good a team - was not shabby. That offense was buily around Elway; not Tony.
@ 1:43 vs Philidelphia - you can see exactly when Dorsett turns on the jets.. His first 2 steps have his feet coming up higher behind him, then when he has to accelerate, his feet barely leave the ground in the next 4 steps and thats how he breezes by the CB #21.
Wow, he was so graceful and agile with all the burst of speed and spins that you hardly notice how powerful a runner he really was... he'd run right through tackles.
I'm not saying Dorsett is the best of the top three or four, but surely, no one topped him!
Darrell Green stil had an angle on Dorsett to get him on that play that has been left out of this montage for some reason. People try to front in his speed when it comes to Green
I was just about to ask that question, who was that, that ran Tony down? Watching this I can't see anyone catching this dude, dam I forgot have fast he was and the vision. Go Cowboys and Go Tony.
And who better to comprise a 10 minute highlight reel than Tony Dorsett. Truley one of a kind!
Say what you want about Barry Sanders, but Dorsett was the first to have those type of moves, maybe not exactly like Barry, but the Dorsett is unquestionable and unmatched. Its truley poetic!
Wonderful Video of the most underrated RB in NFL history.
I know he only played one season in Denver but why isnt there more footage of him with the Broncos? I have one game - I think it is his last game - against the Patriots and he had 100 yards if I am not mistaken.

Landry showcased that mismatch in the 1st Qtr to set up a lot of play action and draws, as well as straight ahead running. Whatever he wanted really. I believe he was going to show TD in the 1st, and secure the game with him in the 4th.
Que: Randy White fumble
Que: Jakie Smith Drop
Que: A couple of blown coverage
playmayker88 1 year ago
@playmayker88
Whatever Landry was thinking, he screwed up by not using Dorsett more - point blank. Landry could out smart himself sometimes and I think he did just that in Super Bowl 13
cllamont 1 year ago
@cllamont
Even using Dorsett more wouldnt have erased the White fumble or the Smith drop. Those were huge plays in a 4 point game.
playmayker88 1 year ago
With the league the way it is today, think about what Dorsett could be doing if he was playing now. The offenses are so much more wide open - he would be a terror in the passing game - screens and hitches, even deep balls with his blazing speed.
cllamont 1 year ago 2
TD Would be the most dangerous guy in the NFL. He was back then and he'd be 10 times as dangerous today. And they thing Chris Johnson is dangerous????? And he is, but TD today...man he'd make him look like a choir boy!

I am a cowboy fan and loved Dorsett but I have to say Walter Payton was the best to ever do it. Dorsett in a broncos uniform is just wrong.

TD is my fav RB but Payton was the greatest of all time.

@cllamont- i respect that. i know people will put barry in the equation but payton did it all. he even was the third string qb for the bears.

Tony Dorsett Career TD Averages
(Regular Season)
15.2 yds / TD Run
35.3yds / TD Pass
(Post Season)
9.4yds / TD Run
8.5yds/ TD Pass
playmayker88 2 years ago 2
With these type of averages you would have to have a lot of long TD runs.
And I'm certain that his carries are much lower than the other great backs of the NFL. Hell give him Emmit's carries and the mark would probably be 30,000
ColumbusnewWorld 1 year ago
That was the point of digging up the averages....
I also calcualated Dickerson, and and a couple others. The only RB that averaged more than Dorsett was Barry Sanders (19yds per TD)
None of the other RB's that are in the top 6 all time, even break single digits in TD Run avg. I think Dickerson was 6 yds per TD.
I have the list at home, I'll post the results when I get there.
I knew Tony's avg had to be the highest if not the highest. But Barry is the only one with more.
playmayker88 1 year ago
I knew Barry would be up there too, he was always breaking long runs, he may have been a little more elusive, than TD, but not faster.
Barry could shake a tackler in a phone booth!
ColumbusnewWorld 1 year ago 2
Dorsett is awesome. Altough the music sounds like someting out of a porn flick.
tbkulavik 2 years ago
Another question:
Maybe one of the regulars here will beat me to it
But I wanna find out yds per TD avg & compare his avg to any of the great RB's in history.
Testament to how underrated TD is.
playmayker88 2 years ago
@playmayker88
LT is not as good as Dorsett was - I dont care what anyone says
cllamont 2 years ago
Here's a question:
We always see highlights of NFL Greatest Runs..
the only run they show of Tony is the 99yd TD.
What about the Falcon run, or the Rams play... or the 85 yd TD vs the Pats..
or the 80yd TD vs the Giants.. or the 84 yd TD vs the Eagles as a rookie.
Dorsett should be in so many more highlight films than is the case now. All you see is Walter, Sanders, and maybe Dickerson and Emmitt.
Tony obviously had the more dynamic electrifying runs.
playmayker88 2 years ago
I notice this fact everytime I watch those bias ass video's.
How can you have the greatest Runs in the NFL without showing the footage of Tony Dorsett. Damn! I wish Tom Landry would have turned him loose more than he did. It is hard to believe some with that type of explosiveness didn't score but 77 TD's in his HOF career.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Yeah I agree with you Columbus, on all your points.
If the NFL wanted to show the actual GREATEST runs in history, they should be showing Tony's touchdowns against:
Atlanta, Pats, Vikings, Vikings II, Giants, Eagles, Steelers....... and many more.
His runs were the epitome of instinctual running at the RB position.
But the NFL has its own idea of who did the greatest running. They decide for its viewers who was the greatest of all time.
Others were also great, but who else ran like Tony?!
playmayker88 2 years ago
..(Dorsett's Mystique)
We can all look back (with almost unanimous certainty ) and say Tony woulda set unbreakable records if he had been given the ball more.
only 77 TD's..
but look at the type of TD's those were. I dont think any RB has ever had more 50+ TD's in a career. Break it down further - more 60+. 70+. 80+... the guy was amazing and the NFL ought be ashamed for not showcasing that history of rare talent!
77 TD's... I call it : Quality over Quanity!
(Not Marcus Allen 1-yarders)
playmayker88 2 years ago
(on Tony only having 77 td's in a HOF career)
I think if Landry would have gave him the ball 22-25 times a game, NFL history would have been radically different! Check out Tony's game logs.. A lot of times he only got 10, 14, 18 carries in a game...yet had huge averages sometimes. Look at the 78 Superbowl vs Steelers. Tony was ripping them up, and I think he ended the day with only 16 carries (96yds).
I guess we can credit Landry with creating the Dorsett mystique! (contd)
playmayker88 2 years ago
@playmayker88
Dallas wins that Super Bowl if Landry used TD more. I will aways believe that
cllamont 2 years ago
Great Point!
I had not looked at it this way. But you are right, he did not have a lot of 1-2 yard TD's or opportunities.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
@playmayker88
I couldnt agree more - I am always irritated how little you see Dorsett in those classic NFL Films. THe 99 yard run is all you ever see. You may see his 77 yard run in which Darrell Green tackles him if the topic is how Green took a great angle to "catch" Dorsett. Other than those to plays, you never see TD.
cllamont 2 years ago
@ 1:52 I remember this game. TD shook the hell out of Darrell Green, and he could NOT catch him. He scored on that play.
He cut ona DIME and left his ass no change!
LOL!
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
ALl those Green lovers that want to claim he ran Tony down dont ever acknowledge plays like this that Tony made on Green
cllamont 2 years ago
Yeah!

The 99 yd run 5:28 ....
it was a nice stiff-arm by Tony that kept him in bounds for the score
playmayker88 2 years ago
the 1st highlight on this video, vs. Patriots.. this was a great run. You can see it in real speed with the call of the game by Frank Gifford and Co.
Look up Tony Dorsett MNF tribute
He breaks up the field and not only outruns the secondary, but he CB's had a running start in FRONT of Tony and he swung it outside and outran the angle. Awesome!

yea ur rite but also this was also a long time ago where the game was less strict they threw bombs to runnning backs it was more like a pickup game. im sure peterson would avg 7-8 yards a play back then
koolguy97 2 years ago
Same as Peterson??? Not even close. A. Peterson is more of a bruiser, and I have doubts that he'll last very long.
Dorsett is probably the most naturally instinctive running back that ever played football next to Barry Sanders. But Tony was much faster. Fitting that he owns the longest run in NFL history that can NEVER be broken....
wittmann205 2 years ago
and he only had 9 teammates on the field at the time
cllamont 2 years ago 2
Great observation Cllamont!
Thats what made that play even more remarkable!
I don't see the same explosive burst today, not even with the likes of Reggie Bush, or Chris Johnson.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
He was getting bombs thrown to him. You don't see RB going deep like that anymore its too bad.
hstjustice 2 years ago
Not many have the soeed to get deep. And the few that do simply dont have the ball skills to go deep.
cllamont 2 years ago
All I hear is how Darrell Green caught Tony from behind. #1 Darrell had an angle, #2 there were so many other times when I saw TD explode away from Darrell on 40-50 yard TD runs, and Darrell simply just could NOT catch him. Darrell was a rookie, and TD was a 6 year vet buy that time.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
yeah, theres a MNF highlight video that shows that play in real-speed
u can see Tony pulling away if u look at just Darrel and Tony's speed comparitively...
but darrel had the angle
playmayker88 2 years ago
I have the entire game on tape. I also saw th play when it happened. I thought Gren had an angle then and I think Green has an angle every time I look at the tape. It chaps my hide when Green in enshrined for this play - its bogus.
cllamont 2 years ago
Yeah!
I saw that!
Lets give Darrell his props but I have seen way to many games when he was directly behind Tony and could never catch him, the same way he could never catch Ron Brown of the then, LA Rams.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago 2
glad someone finally speaks the truth
cllamont 2 years ago
Green was a good corner and I'm in NO WAY disputing his great speed. But when I look at him chase down Eric Dickerson, it is a big difference. He did not have an angle on Eric, he just flat out ran him down. He would have never caught Tony like that. Can you imagine him catching Tony on that play against the Atlanta Falcons. TD was faster that Eric Dickerson.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Wow, that run against the Falcons was unbelievable!
It showed all his skill in one play: vision, patience, moves, cutback, and sheer speed - splitting both CB's.
I wish i was in Texas Stadium that day.

Well they messed around and did the show with just all nfl players for a couple seasons, man they had a group that featured td and of all people herschel walker, when they got to the 100 yd dash it was a done deal, td smoked everybody by at least 20 yds... if anybody has got video please post thanx
paballer88 2 years ago
Yeah!
I remember that. NFL Super Stars, with the Obstacle Course and 100.
In later years, Herschel beat Darrel Green on that show
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Anybody remember the show superstars, in the early eighties? It started out with pro athletes from different sports pitted against each other in olympic type events.
paballer88 2 years ago
I think Dorsett set the record for that show by running the 100 yard dash in gym shoes.
ejphoto 2 years ago
Funny thing cause TD never really set records in highschool, the hopewell high all time leading rusher is former penn state linebacker and current buffalo bill,Paul Posluszny who was a senior and on the field that night in 2001 as TD gave a speach when the school named the field in his honor.
paballer88 2 years ago
TD started out at defensive back. But when the coaches saw his burst of speed they changed his position.

where is the footage of TD as a Bronco - I even have a Dorsett Bronco throwback jersey.
cllamont 2 years ago
You can go to Youtube, Darrell Green Tribute to see that play.
It looked like TD was running @ 3/4 speed and wasn't expecting anyone to be with him until he looked and saw Green, but it was too late to make a move. Green was a rookie, and TD had been in the league for 6-7 yrs.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
you can also see that Green started running up field with a 10 yards headstart from the opposite side of the field and was completely hidden from Dorsett's vision. Dorsett was making guys miss wile Green was flat out running ina straight line across the field with a great angle. He deserves credit for the angle more than the spped to catch TD. I think TD was just as fast. THat side of the field was muddy according to Tex SChramm as well
cllamont 2 years ago
Yeah!
I clocked him @4.10 from the 40-in
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Dorsett Let up !!!!
ojsucksit 2 years ago
@ 2:35, That is just sick! TD had a gear that most running backs could only dream of. You can see that for a split second both corners think they had an angle, and in a blink it is gone. They both have an "oh S**t!" moment and try to catch up, but there is no way that is going to happen.
nosunhere 2 years ago
Yeah! LOL
Look @ 3:15, man his foot work is ballerina like, very impressive. I'm from Florida and I love Emmitt Smith, but he could not run like this guy.
TD started out as a DB in HS and when his coaches saw his burst of speed, the rest is history.

Oh well, can't have every thing I guess...
hicked22 2 years ago
that was a great run - but Green had an angle and head start

TD is one of the only guys in NFL history who could run away from guys with angles on him. Name one guy in the NFL today who can do what you see in thie video.....0
Unbelievable!
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Look @ 5:00.
He fakes out the whole Cardinal Team!
And damn! 99 yards and a half vs the Vikings that was sick! I'm from Florida and I love Emmitt Smith but he couldn't run like this guy. Emmitt was caught from behind all the time. If Dallas had given TD more carries its no telling how many more yards he could have amassed in his career.
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Danm! He shakes Darrell Green right out of the screen!
Look at how he runs away from all the Atlanta Falcons at 2:29-2:40. I was clocking him on the last 40 yards, it was some where in the 4.20 second range...WOW! And that is in full football uniform. This guy was awesome!

@ 2:27 - My favorite highlight vs Atlanta
he shows all the tools - Vision, stop n go, acceleration on a dime, and pure top speed.
He accelerated passed the LB s after juking in the line.. and turned on some nasty speed up thru the secondary.. outrunning TWO CB's who both had angles on him... outran them by a mile too.
Best run of this video!!

That was one of those plays where he did not catch Tony!
Tony lost a half a step after about 6-7 years, and he was still fast then. But when he was a rookie, and his first 2-3 years, nobody had a chance
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago
Tony was still out running most of the league in 1985.......in the 44-0 blowout vs the Bears, tony ripped a 20+ yd run with ease against that Bears D.
And theres a Giants game vs Dallas in 87 where Tony looked plenty fast. Still had the moves and was still dangerous.
He was in no way "shot" in 88 with Denver. That system with the Broncos wasnt complimentary to his game.
playmayker88 2 years ago
I remember that Giants game. Was that the one with Hershel Walker in the same back field?
I agree that, Tony loosing a step was still faster that most backs today
ColumbusnewWorld 2 years ago

The whole game is posted on youtube.
playmayker88 2 years ago
he had some 100+ yard games with Denver.
cllamont 2 years ago
yes, with Denver, Dorsett was the hunt for the rushing title @ the half way point of the season.

Over 700 yards and nearly 4 yards a carry at that age in Denver - which wasnt that good a team - was not shabby. That offense was buily around Elway; not Tony.
cllamont 2 years ago
@ 1:43 vs Philidelphia - you can see exactly when Dorsett turns on the jets.. His first 2 steps have his feet coming up higher behind him, then when he has to accelerate, his feet barely leave the ground in the next 4 steps and thats how he breezes by the CB #21.
