you can also say: yoroshiku onegai shimasu (よろしくおねがいします) although this phrase can be used when asking someone to do something for you (and you want to be polite). It can take on other similar meanigns depending on the context of the conversation but its basically an honorific which can get complicated depending on who you're speaking to etc so its probably better to just use what she described in the vid...
sama is the more formal and polite of the four, it's to show respect to the person. kun is use for a guy and san for girl usually and chan ir reffering to someone youger like a child.
Yeah, the way in which she did it was just an everyday way as we would say "Hey, I'm Luke"
Saying "Watashi no namae wa NAME desu" is a polite and formal way. And also you said "Watashi wa" well the wa needs to be replaced with "no" to make it become "My" (MY name is NAME" - :)
To answer that question, the "watashi wa" isn't necessary because it's blatantly obvious you're talking about yourself which means that if you use "watashi wa" you're placing too much emphasis on yourself and will sound slightly wierd...
You do not always need a subject in a japanese sentence! Remember, this is completely different from English. Forget everything you allready know about english grammar.
Your so cool teaching people japanese. Could you explain stuff like "kun" and "san" that you put on the ends of peoples names? And more numbers? (like up to 20)
your acent is good (: how long did it take you to ummm, recieve that acent? because my friend from america ask me how long it would take and i don't know because it is natural XD
Just "wakarimasen" alone is "I do not understand".
They also both mean that you don't know (same word, different context). You could also say shirimasen but that has slightly different implications and could seem a bit cold or offend someone if you use it wrongly. So if you're unsure it's probably safer to stick with the first. ;)
if you could, can you please do animals? i already know: firefly-hotaru, cat-neko, dog-inu, dolphin-iruka, fish-saka wolf-okami, fox-kitsune, bird-tori, bug-mushi, snake-hebi, mouse-nezumi, and pig-buta. or instead of doing miscellaneous animals could you pleeeease do the 12 animals? i'm srry furget what it's called......has something to do with the chinese calander....ne? onegai-shimasu! Alyssa-sensei! >.<
do you mean Eto? Jyunishi the twelve chinese horary signs are;neko, ushi, tora, usagi, tatsu, hebi, uma, hituji, saru, tori, inu, inoshishi.(cat, cow, tigar, rabit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, bird, dog, pig)
you rock ! i seriously enjoy watching these short lesson clips cause they are really fun..and you hatsuon is actually incredible so ganbatte ~! minasan mo gabatte kudasai
alyassa your really learning japanese good! its great that you as a foreighner tried to learn japanese becouse tere are many forieghners even in japan who dont try for years. it is a very difficult language tho & japanese will appreciate it alyassa!
Oh yay! My sensei just taught me the moushimasu version of introducing yourself so I'm glad to get more reinforcement from you. BTW, I am so glad I found your clips, you seem totally cool. I'm trying to think of a nihongo request. =D
@1Grape4U
Yeah, you can also use:
私は [Name] です。
Watashi wa [Name] desu.
I am [Name].
Or:
私は [Name] といいます。
Watashi wa [Name] to iimasu.
I am called [Name].

People use "san" like mr.mrs. or miss, and to also show respect to that person.
Kun is usually used for a boy like John-kun or Satoshi-kun. :)
