I have owned 2 AE86s and just bought an AW11, and I can say with no bias the AW11 handles better. It has an IRS which the AE86 does not, and has a better weight balance with the engine in the rear.

thank goodness its mid engine. the motor was saved. fronts ends are cheap to get too so that crash shouldnt hurt him that much.

The only problem with MID engine cars is that it can snap spin and once the back end starts to give out there is a very small threshold where if you dont correct it you will just spin out. But these cars are actually made from Lotus so they were made for handling. One of my buddy has 4 of them right now. 3 decent ones 1 of them is JDM right hand drive and one scrap one.

They weren't made from Lotus. It was a design contest in house at Toyota to see what other interesting platforms could share the Corolla stampings. Roger Becker was consulted for help designing the suspension - which was awful. Sakurai-san is the only person AW11 fans should thank.

Once you ditch the lotus laugh for spring rates and fix the alignment, change the rear sway bar and bring it to what Toyota had in mind, then they're 'made for handling' and not understeery squirrely pigs.

@doritoad The AW11 only had a swaybar for 1985 and the 1989 supercharged models, it's not so much an issue of changing it as adding one. If you want to take it to the track you should get a rear sway bar and strut tower brace, but for the 90% of people who keep this car on the road it's set up just fine.

I love the aw11...but my friend who drives an eight-six tells me that it it can frequently spin out and that handling of the aw11 is not that good. I was amazed with the run though. very good.

the handling is amazing on the aw11 he must not know how to drive it...they can be somewhat tricky to drive because of placement of engine and its lack of power

The comment on the handling was just an Opinion by a friend who drives an 8-6. He's an awesome mechanic while i'm a machinist who loves these cars.

I agree with you macdaddy that we do not have much experience with this type of car as we are more accustomed to the FR layout.

It has had a 3S-GTE conversion, putting out somewhere around 390ps, Driven By Qten Kobayashi. This information was given to me by someone who also posted footage of this vehicle.
