Explained perfectly to me, other than I had learned from previous videos that the 4th finger isn't needed, but adds a fuller sound. Might have been good to bring that up?
@qwertqwe oh, well the 4th finger plays the octave. yea it makes it fuller by doubling the root, but doesn't cahnge the context of the chord. For example, C-G is a C5 power chord, but if you double the root with the pinky (4th finger), then you're playing C-G-C. It's the same exact chord, but a tad fuller sounding, I suppose.
cool, We put a link to your video in our vid! it's the how to play ned's decalssified theme song. it's on our page! I share it with a friend, that's why i typed that way.
the importatn thing abt the power chord is to partial barre the three nots ur playing with the first finger and muting ALL the other three string with the first finger
is there a certian way u have to strum or can u strum any way u want to? the strumming is the only thing that really confuses me when it comes to playin a guitar. cause i dont know if u strum all the strings or just the ones that ur pressing on...
@COUNTRYMAN223 no. u mute the lower three strings/unplayed with the first finger so that they don't sound accidentally ie u partially barre them.. and in open chords u just strum the strings u want and/mute the unplayed strings with the thumb or nearest finger while strumming.. and with the upstrums u just strum the first 3/4 (from the bottom to top) strings
@COUNTRYMAN223 no. u in the case of power chords mute the lower three strings/unplayed strings with the first finger so that they don't sound accidentally ie u partially barre the strings... and in open chords u just strum the strings u want and/mute the unplayed strings with the thumb or nearest fingers while strumming.. and with the upstrums u usually just strum the first 3 or 4 (from the bottom to top) strings
Power chords or also known as Open chords your B power chord is also known as a B sus or B there are many name for the same chords its also now as a b# to just as a note..
@waltribeiro ur a good tutor man, i learned to read music from ur vids. So for power chords(acoustic guitar), i am supposed to silence the strings below the root and 5th but i can play them well if i play em like barre chords using pinky to silence the 5th+...but its so stressful on the pinky and if i go for regular power chords using tips then i dont silence the strings cuz my index finder curls around like it normally does, so no silence, pluss i have trouble moving up down cuz of that. help?
If you are still wondering, what I like to do is silence every other string by lightly pressing on it (muting) with your ring finger. Still focus on playing only the 3 notes but the muted strings allows you to make some mistakes.
@ThePasswordIsGrapes If you want to get more specific I recommend wild thing by the troggs. watch?v=r7kwIFt5Xsw Though the first one I learnt was everybody hurts by rem. it uses only four chords. And you can't go wrong with smells like teen spirit by nirvana. if you want individual song tutorials try searching martyzsongs
Viewers who want to understand power chords probably don't want to waste their time reading your fan's chatting banter. I found this lesson to be practically useless because your explanation really only speaks to guitarists who are far more experienced than the person who asked about power chords. I can play a number of songs on guitar, but I've never learned the basics. Hence, I don't know what "root, 3rd, 5th" means. Thanks for trying, but I'll have to go elsewhere for a good explanation.
@waltribeiro I love these tutorials... but I have a few minor annoyances to point out. When you write out chords on your white board like at 2:16, you should really put the high E string on the bottom, because it's the one closest to the floor. Not demanding anything, it's just I know it.
The only other thing I noticed is that I usually write the sharps on the right side of the circle of fifths. I don't mean to be picky, just pointing stuff out that confuses me sometimes. Thanks for the vids.
@sparkytrick circle of fifths works both ways. it doens't matter what side you put the sharps on. Also, the high E always goes on top in chord diagrams. that's just how it is
@waltribeiro Okay, it's just not the way I do it. Thanks for the videos, I am learning alot. I think my friends do the chord diagrams the other way becaue it's easier to explain to absolute begginners. The circle of fifths thing was me being picky with my OCD in full force XD my apoligies.
could you elaborate on the 5ths and the octave note? i know you say over 2 and up a string but i was wondering why it is called a 5th...and then theres 8th notes...confusing.
So, this is the 3rd video of yours i've watched and you're awesome! You do talk a bit fast, but that is what the pause button is for. I really like your teaching style. You're easy to understand and it's really helpful. I just bought my first guitar yesterday and i have really small hands so it's hard for me to play but you make it easy to figure out. So thank you! :]
What's the difference between a power chord and a barre chord? The only difference I see is that in a power chord you're not barring the fret that the root is on.
