Botflies are never normally deadly for their hosts, actually - the kitten is likely to have lived on its own once the insect left. They may look bad, but they only form a chamber in the first layers of skin, which they keep remarkably clean (botflies almost never lead to infection) and seldom cause pain. The kitten was probably uncomfortable however, and a botfly in such a place on a cat isn't normal - most bots prefer rabbits and rodents.

We are talking specifically about BOTFLIES here, and I know what Botflies do and do not do. They remain in the same skin pocket their entire parasitic stage and produce compounds to prevent bacterial contamination. Only after removal does infection sometimes occur.

@TheBugsby There's a variety of Botfly out there, predominantly ones that lay eggs on normal flies and mosquitoes. The eggs fall off when warmed by our (Or an animal's) body heat, and the larvae hatch and burrow under the skin.

It's rare, but not unheard of, for humans in North America and other highly civilized areas to get Botfly larvae infestations. They're more common in more "natural" or rural areas where conditions are better for insect life to flourish openly.

So yes, humans get them.
