@TheFlyingPineapple, Based on a Schnieder Trophy winning plane, the Merlin V12 is one of the greatest engine ever made, the elliptical wing shape is one of the best looking, and most manoeuvrable designs, over the year it became one of the all time faster prop driven aircraft, and if the Messerchmit was better, (FW109 maybe), then the Battle of Britain would have at least been closer, but it wasn't.
mg's are pretty dire really, and i dont know why people are comparing them to vauxhalls, they are just as bad. vauxhall believe that to make a good car you put on an awful bodykit and some power and thats good.
love the car and the fact its actually quite shit is what gives it most of its appeal. Like tvr and alfa youd never look at them twice if they were any good
front lights are punto, rears are fiat coupe with added chrome rings.
not cheap but many manufacturers cross reference parts and many headlights are made by the same manufacturer (in france) but not not stamped...do you think car manufacturers make their own...no!
anyone else think that the driving position in this car doesn't look to comfortable or useful ? ... i don't know, i think i'd rather get a Vauxhall VXR8 if i wanted a big V8
ehh, i was just speaking off what i saw (ie it looked like his arms were almost completely extended and the seat was a little too horizontal)... besides, i'm not really a fan of the looks on the thing.. just me i suppose... thats really cool that you have on though! someday i'll have the money for something cool too : )
Thanks. How's the name 'MAXX'...F1 or Pheonix? How's a 5L V8 with 650bhp and 600 lb ft of trq? Optional S/C up to 800bhp. And also a Lotus handling set-up. To help it rival the new GT3RS, 458, LP560, GT-R and new McLaren.
Thought for anyone: if I commisioned you to build a supercar (that had something between 500 to 600 horsepower) what would you do? Rules: one component only from each company. Layout can be however you like.
I'd have the CF body designed by McLaren. The handling set up by Lotus who did the Nissan GT-R. The interior would be designed by Aston. And the 5L V8 - optional S/C - would come from Ford. I'd call it the Maxx Phoenix. What do ya think? Good recipe?
Front-engined, Rear-engined. I'd have it handle like a GT-R--but more fun, shock like a Zonda, go like an Ascari A10, but the sound? Be as meaty as this SV. As loud and free as a Ford GTX1. As crackling as an Ascari A10 and as gentlemenly as a Morgan Aeromax. Know what I mean?
Your car sounds a lot like this MG SV: an Anglo-American joint effort that isn't as smooth or sophisticated as the Germans, but is a whole lot more fun.
I completely agree with you. The Audi R8 leaves be completely cold, and as for the 911...yawn...This MG would pull up a way bigger crowd than any 911 - if it didn't break down. That said, I still maintain it's too expensive for what it is.
True, also the V8 whilst sounding great is not as powerful as the present day breed of V8s like BMW and German offerings. Now.... if only BMW has still owned MG Rover when this car came out and they could have used the new V8 from the M3....
Still there's always a lambo, Audi owned and so a bit more reliable these days.
The chinese own MG and Rover, they own the rights to MG-TF, Rover 75 etc, with most of the rights and designs. They are producing the MG-TF in low volumes.
The Rover 45/MG-ZS was part designed on the chassis of an old honda civic so honda still own their part of the rights so it's unlikely that will see the light of day again.
The rights to the MG-SV were bought by a british company, last I heard they were producing very low volumes of the car again but I haven't heard anything since.
PS Originally the engine is from ford, the carbon fibre bodywork was made on the Isle of Wight, and the car originated in Italy and was assembled in the UK. Stands to reason if they can make it work they could just source a jaguar V8.
Their 4.2 litre has been around for a good few years now, but the 5 litre in the XF-R is brand new. Do they still make the V12 they put in the old XJS?
simplyified components list...? you mean chassis, drive train, engine, tranny, diff, brakes, induction/breathing, exhaust, space frame/body shell? Not every last thing in each of them like who makes the spark plugs?
Well the jag V8 engine from the XF seemed to ok when supercharged on the salt flats in the states, so I'd have that. Aston martin interior, lambo body. Front engine, four wheel drive with 60:40 rear/front power split
@jmsvids i'd have supras 2jz gte engine (over 800bhp with stock internals so it'd be available for spec models too :D) TVR interior, with vanquishy style but sports car personality and looks kinda thing :p and steer with your rear so rear wheel drive :D
@jmsvids Just a little heavy, don't you think? I'm hoping that someone can find a way to make a car street legal with a sequential six-speed with dog-engagement, and NO ASSISTS. Then, give it 450 horsepower (that's a nice number), and a German/Japanese tuned suspension.
Clarkeson did say this car could handle more power. Also these days there are so many good engines around any small volume manufacturer might as well concentrate on making a good car with a good chassis etc and buy the engine off the shelf. Examples... Lotus Elise/Exige, Ascari A10, Zonda.
That's true. Ferrari used to be the king of supercars, but not anymore. Now, loads of people are having a go, and why not? As for your point about the Lotus Exige, I don't think Lotus have ever once made their own engine. And TVR only did it in the last 10 years or so.
Name a car with a better noise than that at 2:11 GOD ALMIGHTY!!! Proper V8 Gargle! I've got a mate who has one and he's redone the interior and has added a new 6.5L Roush V8 with 600bhp and it does 217mph and sounds better AND louder than this! Beat that Mr. Clarkson!
whilst on the subject, if anyone has a link to somewhere on the web that lists all the music on top gear that'd be great! I wonder if some of the music is in-house BBC as some of it is played on other BBC shows sometimes.
also this is a road spec car, it is the prototype 5 litre, the first. All suspension etc was as road spec SVR. i understand that many Top Gear tests are modified cars (as manufacturers know they need to do well on Top Gear.)
I think Jeremy' s right. The SV is a good car, but it's too expensive for what it is. If they'd priced it at £35 000 it would be going against the Lotus Exige, TVR T350 and the Ford Mustang - and it could compete with them. As it stands, it's going against the Corvette ZO6, Noble M15 and 911 GT3RS. And it just can't match them for performance.
Yeah I suppose, but I still think the SV is too expensive for what it is. It's like Richard Hammond said - it's like a TVR, except a TVR has a nicer interior, and is cheaper.
maybe, personally i think the interior is great. again this is a prototype hence no satnav etc, no aibags as its has a FIA roll cage and racing harness.
The one they tested here is a prototype, but Jeremy Clarkson reviewed a road going version of this car in the Times, and complained of the same things. I don't mind plastic on the interior if it's good quality. I believe that's what lets American cars down so badly - cheap nasty interiors.
Yeah you'd think there would be a market for a dealership selling TVRs, Lotus, Noble, MGs etc under one roof, especially with the £:$ ratio where it is at the moment! I think Lotus have gone it alone and have started selling in the US?
...but do you see Noble, or TVRs....? Alas TVRs are not in production anymore which is a pity for the US market as they are as close as you get to an american muscle car but made in europe!
Nobles I have seen here but they are very rare, and you only see them at the race track no one drives one on the street. I have never seen a TVR in person, but I know of people that have imported them and they are for sale from time to time on eBay. I wish that TVR sold more cars here in the US I believe there would be an enthusiast market for them.
It would be nice; to have one in the United States with that Ford engine that resides under the hood it would be easy to maintain. I would bet that most ford dealerships could service it. It is a really nice car, wish we could get TVRs and other lower volume British cars here.
The one in london was deep metallic red, kinda like mg-rover did a nightfire red but more red/orange. I also saw one in Kent just recently which was dark blue. Was thinking recently how much power you could get with a supercharger...
i think they are finding the current economic climate difficult.
my top gear car (vin 118) is a ferrari colour, titanium. Built for Peter Stevens but used (dec 2003) because it was the 5 litre. The 5 litre being officially announced April 2004.
So so so must respect for buying that car!, it is the best sounding engine note ever, love short stroke Ferrari V8s, or Italian V10's in a tunnel, but that V8 with british pipe work is the best. Thankyou for making the roads a better place!
Yeah they also had it tuned up twice from the basic power level. Sounds awesome! A new company has bought the rights to the car and is producing them again.
I saw an Vauxhall Molnaro in the front, an Mazda RX8 on the laterals and an Fiat Barchetta from behind......

I like the Murcielago LP670-SV, but as for the Gallardo...glorified Audi. In the same way that the Cadillac CTS is a glorified Saab.
I think MG should do a follow up to this, only give it the supercharged 5 litre V8 from the Jaguar XF-R.
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
That sounds more like it. The new owners might be able to source that engine from Jaguar I think it's Jag's own design?
jmsvids 2 years ago
Who actually owns MG these days? I heard it was a Chinese company.
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
The chinese own MG and Rover, they own the rights to MG-TF, Rover 75 etc, with most of the rights and designs. They are producing the MG-TF in low volumes.

NobleM15fan 2 years ago
I don't think they do make the V12. With the range being fairly limited, x-type, s-type, XKR etc nothing took the V12.
Dunno why really seeing as Ford used to own Jaguar as aston martin and there is a V12 aston power unit, basically 2 Ford V6s bolted together.
The 4.2 L jag unit is a bit tired, the new V8s are much better and are ready for lean burn technology of it becomes needed.
jmsvids 2 years ago
You're not quite right there. The engine was Aston Marin's own - if it was 2 Ford V6s, it would be a W12, like the Bentley Continental GT.
Thought - if you were asked to make a supercar that had between 500 and 600 BHP, what would you do? Rules: 1 component only from each company.
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
