How I truly love this scene, the two were precious, she played Libbie to a T. He played Custer with all of his flamboyant ways about him. No one could play it any better then Errol Flynn. He is simply the best when it comes to General George Armstrong Custer.
@nemeckathleen1: I always thought that Errol Flynn played a magnificent Custer - nobody afterwards ever quite made the 'Boy General' come alive he did! Olivia was wonderful as Libbie too (but she out did herself as Melanie Hamilton-Wilkes in Gone With the Wind).
No, it doesn't really matter they didn't meet like this in real life. After all these movies were made for an escape from life not to face it. Another movie, Santa Fe Trail (also with Flynn/de Haviland), is full of historical inaccuracies, but is still enjoyable to watch. Raoul Walsh, the director of "They Died With Their Boots On", said he wanted to film history as it should have been - not as it was. He superbly did that while still making a very enjoyable and memorable story about Custer.
Olivia de Havilland and Errol Flynn SO should have got married, Olivia is stunning and Errol handsome, this has to be one of the best scenes in the movie. I love how they met in this movie....does it really matter that they didnt really meet like this.
