Filipinos don't really think they're spanish. yes they were hispanized but Americans came & changed everything, schooled them, taught them the english language so they became americanized, westernized that's why they think the way they do because they were born knowing only American also because it was an American colony, US instilled in them the american way of life even in the Philippines so for those who thinks otherwise read their history so you don't be ignorant. People are of mixed race.
No filipinoys are NOT closely to Malays. U guys look more of a hybrid between chinese n spanish. Malays look more resembling to the Polynesians than filips. That's why native hawaiians used to refer themselves as Malaysians when filing out job application or birth cert as there WERENT "pacific islanders" option yet.
And us Malays CAN 100% distinguish filipinoys from a fellow Malay or Indonesian. Because malays n indonesians r more related than we r to filipinoys.

Another fact. Dr.Jose Rizal in search for proof that indeed the Filipinos had an identity before the Spaniards came in the Philippines on 1521, found and annotated Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas, a historical account about the Philippines from 1493 to 1603. In this book, Morga proved that the Filipinos had an identity before the colonizers came.
All of your researches are incorrect and misleading. I am a professor in History, Philippine and World. The concept of purity in blood, as to one particular country depends greatly on your time-frame. The farther you dig deep into the annals of history, you would be able to understand that, once there was one mass of land called Pangaea and one body of water called Pantalasa, from these facts, we would be able to infer, that all nationalities at present descended from one aborigination.
filipinos were of malays but this malays belongs to the mongoloid race such as chinese, koreans, japs, thailanders, vietnamese, malaysian and indonesian, it is in their genes!!! those from south east asia are of type B mongoloid and those from the east asia are of A mongoloid! as what i also read on the wikipedia philippines has the most eurasian population in the whole world.... eurasian are of those products of intermarriage bettween the europeans especially spain and americans!!....
FOR ALL THE MIS-INFORMED WHO THINK FILIPINOS ARE A PURE RACE ... OR THAT THEY ARE PURELY MALAY ... Please get you facts straight once and for all ... look-up "Filipino Race" in Wikipedia if you haven't got the academic initiatives to read actual books.
ive done my research shapeshifter. thank you very much.... and the notion that filipinos are not pure and that we are all mixed is just colonial mentality working and the poor philippine education system teaching false notions. Majority of filipinos are of pure malay blood. only a handful of us have any chinese or spanish blood. intermarriages were not common during colonial times.

filipinos think they're all part spanish.... in reality, the majority of filipinos are of pure malay blood. intermarriages were not that common during colonial times unless you were of status.
@RitzJB - It is probably helpful for you to know that Filipinos are really a by-product of inter-marriages of MANY races (Malay, Chinese, Indonesians, Indians, Spanish, etc.). THERE ARE NO PURE FILIPINOS unless you descended from the indigenous pygmies that originally occupied the islands.
Research on pre-Hispanic Philippine history ... it may help you to understand.
im filipino myself and I will agree.... we are a bunch of white-washed colonial mentality slaves. It's true..... yes many countries are influenced by western nations, but there is a FINE LINE between being inlfuenced yet still preserving your original culture.. and completely submitting yourself to another culture while throwing away your own. It's obvious even in the way filipinos talk.... taglish?.. give me a break. if ur gonna speak ur native language speak it, dont mix it with english
ALIBATA ang unang alpabeto ng mga Filipino bago pa man tau sakupin ng mga espanyol at dahil sa kaswapanagn ng mga espanyol ini rase nila ang history ng pinas at pinalitan nila ng history para ma credit sa kanila na kini claim nila na sila ang founder ng pinas how come that magellan was found the Philippines? eh bago pa man sila dumating may tao na sa pinas!
Even if we change our names, does that mean we don't have an Identity Crisis? If i Change my name to Lapu-Lapu will I know who I am? Some of the Philippines National Heroes Spanish names. Names don't matter it's what you know about yourself and your history, we can change the name of the Philippines back to Maharlika, and we will still have conflict, and women wanting to lighten their skin.
For your info ... Filipinos are a blend of Pygmies, Malays, Indonesians, Chinese, Japanese, American, English, Indian ... we are the first multi-national and multi-cultural people ... which is why we should NOT JUST THINK AMERICAN.
We can assume many types of names but we have just one culture which is a blend of MANY CULTURES.
Furthermore, Spanish names came about because of Governor -General Claveria's decree for Filipinos to also assume Spanish names ... that too, is part of our culture. Filipinos too, may have Spanish blood. Just so you know!!!
what's wrong if someone is proud of their heritage? If you're heritage is aeta, be proud of it ok? Filipinos are mostly mixed. If you think you're not then perhaps you're pure malay.. My grandma is Spanish.. but i don't look like one..my brothers are.. If someone is singkit, pwede bang tawagin siyang may lahing espanyol? of course not!!!
@jajadx - I think you should read your history books before you make sweeping statements about Filipinos. What's more ... within Asia ... there are many cultures and races. I don't think you know what you're saying when you say ... "pure asian."
@shapeshifter2007 i know theres different ethnicities in asia, its just that its funny how alot of filipinos claim theyre spanish when its pretty obvious they are not even mixed =)
Regardless of the struggles that the Filipino people have faced, in times of political, military, and social oppression, there have been many leaders throughout our colonial, modern, and social history in a movement of resistance. Of course it is important to recognize the roots of our struggles, and the history of our people, but it's important to know the resistance as well.
wow..this is an interesting topic,..yes indeed..i believe that us Filipino have identity crisis..lets take for an example OUR NAMES>.im a filipino but i was given an English name which is actually pretty ironic because if i was named after Philippine names, my name would be 'MALAKAS, MAGANDA" and etc..but we we Filipinos finds it embarrassing...thats why we continually adopt other nation's culture forgetting completely our own.... its pretty ironic how we discriminate our own culture...
Even in common religion of the Filipinos we are not truly independent we are believing on a faith of an another nation The Vatican City which is another country, yes it has control on many Filipinos = no to contraception - population boom ok, political intervention - Malacanang Papal Nuncios, The filipinos have no time to think about nationalism because they are really so intoxicated for 300+ years and counting...........
The hard thing about the majority of Filipinos is that the white race is the PAR EXCELLANCE the role model, the superior, the beautiful, the perfect, the wise, the cool, COMMON FILIPINO VIEW = Filipino flag = probinsyano or baduy, wearing salakot = shameful and bakya, It is obvious that for almost 300+ years even God is portrayed as a white man so we cannot blame our people from xenocentrism.
The Filipinos shall learn to refine their adoption of other cultures by not having amnesia of who they really are, yes I agree with the views of others regarding pro colonial bias on our pre - Spanish history that depicts Filipinos as savages and lacking civilization, Filipinos are a great people even in the ancient period, they have their written language, religion that has much in common with it's Asian neighbors. Philippine history shall be reformed and cleansed.
I'm Filipino Spanish, from the USA, and I speak English and Spanish, moreover no Tagalog,it's easier for me to say Filipino Spanish, than Filipino because of the Tagalog language expectation.
That's cool. I didn't mean to ridicule guys like you ... I meant to point out the lack of identity of Philippine-born Filipinos who have forgotten their roots and culture.
Filipinos have so much potential. We have so many strengths that can make us a well-respected people.... all we have to do is be proud of who we are and stop trying to be like other cultures! It's time to change!
Siyempre. Tignan mo ang mga school books natin. They start out with the Philippines being enslaved. Th ordinary Filipino does not know what it looked like before in the Philippines. And what our ancestors were capable of. And no one tells our children what potential lies within them. So, we practically have nothing to look back upon nor look forward to. It's a shame. But eventually this will change in the future.
