Japanese every year kill over 1000 whales to eat and maybe hundreds of dolphins to eat but americans europeans have killed more than 1 million middle easterners to get their oil to drive their cars. So at this moment the greed balance is less for japan and more for westerners.
We now know even though we call it as single species, Orcinus orca, they consist of many different populations and each popluations have their own ecology and never interbreed.
And not surprisingly, there's no valid data about killer whale populations in Japanese water, animal's number, ecology, whatsoever.
I don't want to judge them for being cruel, as it can be subjective.
We all are inherently cruel, having to consume other living organisms, and killer whales certainly can be cruel, evident by their predation habit and even surplus killing without eating their victims.
But the real problem is, those killer whales are probably from already depleted population thanks to indiscriminate hunting over 40+ years.
Japanese killed 1000+ killer whales from their water over that period.
For those who go to Seaworld just because orcas are born there doesn't make it right. They are still forced to do tricks. They will never know freedom
On a serious note, let me remind everyone that chickens and cows are domesticated. They are bred in large quantities in captivity, as are pigs and turkeys. I doubt that many of these domesticated animals in their current state of health (homogeneously bred condition, pumped with steroids and antibiotics) would survive long in the wild. Orcas, dolphins and whales are basically our counterparts of the ocean. They are self aware, highly intelligent and social. To compare them to cows, pigs and chickens is ridiculous. Orcas in particular even have distinct dialects and cultures depending on which pod they belong to. They are also endangered and need our help to ensure that they don't become extinct. It is disheartening to see that some people still discount these attributes without empathy for these creatures.
It's not about what kind of animal it is, it's about cruelty and to keep animals like killer whales and dolphins in captivity for our pleasure when they clearly are suffering and dying from being stressed out.

Many killer whale populations are consist of low hundreds, even dozens animal, which make them very susceptible to even small scale capture.
Many, if not all, killer whale populations off pacific northwest probably are devastated because of hunting by Japanese.

That number is really overwhelming.
Killer whales are, as ocean's top predator, inherently rare.
They are in every ocean, but aren't numerous anywhere.
In pacific northeast, which is very nutrient-rich water, probably only low thousands killer whales are roaming.
By no chance those killer whales off Japanese water have regained their pre-hunting number.

It looks like they were taking them into captivity. Were they killed? That whale sounded scared and sad to leave its pod. Their brains are larger and more complex than our own and their language transmits enough data to convey full streaming and audio miles away.

@sophie8739 I have been told, that seaworld is not taking orcas in from the ocean, anymore. They are just breeding now. I realy want to be an orcatrainer, and be with them, and understand them. We are learning so much, of orcas in captivity. And more and more people are understanding, that it is a beautiful animal, and not a killer mashine. I dont think it would be like that, if those importent whales in captivity, have not told, that they are amazing and gentle.

We also use tons of pills on them because they get olsurs. After 13 years I understand all too well and wish that I felt less resentment, but as you say, you are not really welcome here (for more than a visit).

If dolphins have self awareness, unlike cows or chickens, if it was being killed it would be comparable to how we humans would feel if we were being killed. Orcas, dolphins and whales are basically our counterparts of the ocean. They are self aware, highly intelligent and social. To compare them to cows, pigs and chickens is ridiculous. Orcas in particular even have distinct dialects and cultures depending on which pod they belong to. They are also endangered and need our help to ensure that they don't become extinct. It is disheartening to see that some people still discount these attributes without empathy for these creatures.

It's not about what kind of animal it is, it's about cruelty and to keep animals like killer whales and dolphins in captivity for our pleasure when they clearly are suffering and dying from being stressed out.
