  • OMG, thumbs up if you discovered this in 2012.

  • Is it just Tori Amos who everybody overanalyzes and claims to just know every detail of her songs? I mean geez half of the claims about the meaning of her songs are blatant lies, and it just takes a moment to find out, from her own words, the meaning behind her songs online. If you dont know the meaning the hell is the point making shit up??

  • lol...wow...the commentary.

  • I read she got a scholarship to study classical piano at age 5. Genius ,pure genius

  • "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." -Steve Martin. Get a life, cupcakes. I doubt Tori herself gave the damn video this much thought...20 years ago when it came out. That big rectangular thing with the hinges on it? It leads OUTSIDE. There are people out there. Check it out.

  • If anyone is puzzled over the meaning of this song may I suggest you read up on what Tori has to say. She has written some amazing books and she has A LOT to say. There are plenty of interviews here on YouTube.

  • This is the thing I have never understood about videos....the lyrics totally point to her miscarriage, but yet...the visuals deal with an abduction.....why not have visual references like an empty crib or a spinning mobile or Tori rocking in a chair or whatever.....why make a video that has nothing to do with the song is about....?

  • @lauriepants1 Tori doesn't really want to have just one interpretation of a song...

  • @lauriepants1 Because she is describing the EMOTION. How crass would it be to have empty cribs, spinning mobiles and other such tacky cliches? Tori encodes her songs, lyrics and art to speak to the audience on a deeper level. Think about the feelings of loss and how it feels to have something so innately yours taken from you. Abduction is being taken against your will. Your soul is hijacked etc etc. This is art, not MTV. Come on!

  • @MetaMiss Um actually it was MTV that played this when it first came out. And no I wasn't thinking of cliches like empty cribs and spinning mobiles....more along the lines of a sad-eyed little fetus with angel wings, floating through a grove of weeping willows...you nasty ignorant little twat. Fuck you and YOUR smug little interpretations.

  • @lauriepants1 Um, I'm not the ignoramus who has to communicate abusively. Why don't you read what you wrote? - quote - "why not have visual references like an empty crib or a spinning mobile." Now you've taken it a step further and would like to see a winged foetus floating. I'm sure every woman who has suffered a miscarriage would just love this imagery, considering what every hopeful mother wants - a fully developed, healthy LIVING baby. Congratulations - I rest my case.

  • @lauriepants1 ps darling, they're not my interpretations, it is the meaning of the song. Read up on Tori - it's all there. Education is the key that will help you find improved ways of communicating your point without having to resort to verbally assassinating someone via the internet. If that's how you are in real life, I suggest you practice refining those social skills so you can argue your point in a less self-demeaning manner.

  • Okay so let me get this straight:

The song is her trying to convince herself that she didn't have a miscarriage, that she didn't want a baby. But the truth (the guy chasing her) is trying to get her, and at the end when the girls (the unborn baby) leave her because she abandoned them. I think.

  • @Xeitera Tori is Elvis Presley and the blonde girls are Bob Dylan coming along to dethrown the former "king." The baby was lost in a plane crash and the music died.

  • @edwdixon5 ._.

  • @Xeitera She is coming to terms with the grief a woman feels in this scenario. "she could move a glacier but she couldn't keep baby alive." - "doubting there's a woman in here somewhere". She doesn't want to be alive anymore, but she "don't really mean it." The characters at the end represent the life (male or female) that she wants to set her free but they can't because they're not really there. Her hands are tied & she is alone but she did choose life because she did not drown (in her grief).

  • @MetaMiss ...That was confusing. .3.

  • @Xeitera what was confusing?

  • @MetaMiss Er...it just kind of didn't make sense. I thought my explanation made sense, and yours just kind of threw me off track. o3o'

  • @Xeitera Your explanation said the unborn baby leaves her cos she abandoned them? How is a miscarriage abandonment? Try to think in terms of emotion and not just the events. The baby had it lived would set her free from this grief. Think about it.

  • @MetaMiss The unborn baby was mad at Tori for abandoning her (accidentally), so they abandoned her.

  • @Xeitera interesting take on the situation. Do you really think an unborn baby would harbour a grudge against their mother who miscarried? Since the whole video is a metaphor, I don't think you have really thought about the emotion as much as you are the event that is being conveyed.

  • @MetaMiss Yeah, the baby would have a grudge. How would you feel if your mom just let you die? (Well, not on purpose.)

  • @Xeitera that has to be the most ridiculous argument I have ever heard. There is nothing I can say to it, except GOODBYE

  • @MetaMiss ...

  • @Xeitera based on your comments, you dont even know what a miscarriage is...

  • @QBFOJustin A miscarriage is when someone is pregnant and the baby dies inside the mom. I'm not a fricken 5 year old. =_=

  • @Xeitera then stop acting like one. Saying an unborn, unable to think for itself baby would hold a grudge against its mother, after its dead, even though in no way was the mother to blame, makes you sound like you dont know what a miscarriage is. Or how the mind of an unborn baby works. Because it doesnt work like that. Even a 5 year old would know that so I dont know what to relate you to...

  • pft... dem be some blonde Cornflake hoes

  • Blond girls.. =)

  • I thought the song was about rape.

  • @fiflamour its about her misscarriage

  • I have been an Ear with Feet for many many many years... this song is about her miscarriage. Very sad sad song.. I cry whenever I hear it. And she is not a smoker!

  • i feel her pain, hence the fact im listening to this song after years of not hearing it...

  • One of my favourite video!one of best moment of tori's music

  • Comment removed

  • Aren't there any real Ears with feet here?? Toriphiles should set all these assholes straight; don't pretend you know or understand her!

  • here here here

  • @michellesingsfunny That's the one thing I get tired of - she sings that in hearly all her songs, and it drives me batty some reason:)

  • Very beautiful video. Tori Amos is such a powerfully creative artist <3

  • I love this video... I would have made it almost the same* Thank you Tori <3

  • ITS Amazing

    !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • When I was 17 I fell in LOVE with Tori! I love every song! She's my all time favorite artist! She's my muse! Thanks Tori! -xo

  • One of the most amazing song writer/musicians of our time. Tori is truely gifted!

  • I am, seeing a lot of commentary on abortions. She wrote this song after she had a MISCARRIAGE not an abortion. "Say you don't want it again and again, but you dont, dont really mean it." She wanted her child, and she lost it. She was telling herself she didn't want it to try and feel better about it, but she did want her child. It is just sad that she lost it :(

  • @PlutoCharon33 true. hell one of her first lines is: "she couldn't keep baby alive/doubting if there's a woman in there somewhere".

I've known women who've miscarried and they often have the thought that they did something wrong and that they aren't "woman enough" to have a child.

  • @GreatGarloo - interesting.

  • @GreatGarloo I think a miscarriage is a fail attempt to live outside the womb of conception and that for a woman means you become inferential thus persecution in every aspect of life reason why many develop depression afterwards

  • @PlutoCharon33 To be accurate, I was reading Tori's explanation of this song and she described the part you said as someone who wanted to take their own life - give up - "you say you don't want it (life), this circus (living) we're in but you don't really mean it" she said it was like the feeling of someone having a REALLY bad day...

  • @PlutoCharon33 Why do we have to overanalyze pop songs. Maybe the song is about something specific, but we can also apply it to other things, not just one topic.

  • the ending mad me mad. i would save her

  • did the tree say "Skeeted" ????

  • @ckickenhead

this song is about a miscarriage that she had. "skeeter" is what she called her unborn fetus

  • @chewchabie omg, ive known of this song for well over 10 years and yet i never knew this ... puts a whole new view on the song

  • Q: One last question. Who is the ice cream assassin?

Tori: "Who do you think that is?

    Q: I have no idea

Tori: "Well, people have been praying to him for a very long time and more wars have been fought in his name. The big guy. Think about it."

She's so intelligent she's the best

  • @fusilados so..... God is an ice cream assassin?????? geeez

  • @ckickenhead no.... Satan is.

  • @theyellowrose92 - LOL!

  • Amazing X

  • what's with the wierd filter?

  • In fact, everyone is correct. Why? Art is what you make it. You interpret it how it appeals to you. Go look at at a Jackson Pollock painting, everyone will say something different. However, many more women have had abortions than some realize. The trauma has been minimized by the Pro-Choice movement. Most women have nowhere to go to get help. They simply turn away or drive away. Miscarriage or abortion, losing a child is never easy.

  • @dawnremains I was going to say something but you said it all xxx

  • @nikkysaysrawr Yup. She wrote this when she didn't. Her daughter was born in 2000, "Spark" was made in 1998.

  • Has got to be one of the most haunting songs and videos EVER.

  • This was about her miscarriage and how she felt like she wanted to die, found the strength to move forward "but she don't, she don't really mean it" She was angry at God for letting it happen hence the line, "trusting my soul to the ice cream man(God)," You would have to be a die hard Tori fan to know that;-)From what I have read the two people in the car at the end of the song that look like Village of the Damned children represent angels...angels leaving her to deal with it on her own.Get it?

  • I actually prefer this version to the unaltered one..

  • it was always my understanding that this song was about her miscarriage.

    stop hating.

  • So, you're purposefully attempting to bypass a federal law...

  • i wonder why God does allow miserableness as so... But i adore this song*

  • Anyone who wants to say Joe Paterno did enough should A, be ashamed...and B, forced to watch this from beginning to end. That boy went through as much, maybe more than Tori's character in this video...and his witnesses did the same thing at the end.

  • Oh, Tori Amos you're so beautiful.

  • She was the Kate Bush of the 90's! She had an enormous spark to her. I saw her in concert a number of times. She is a stunning performer!

  • @smeltriver09 Absolutely! I always think of Kate Bush when I hear Tori!

  • FUCKING HATE THAT LESBIANS GIRLS THEY LET TORY DOWN ,, COME ON PEPES HELP TORY

  • @depswall actually i believe that a guy and a girl who are twins. the guy is just a very androgenous looking fella. i think they are on the album cover, too, but i could be wrong.

  • I always felt like (for some reason it is music take it how you hear it) she was refering to suicide "say you dont want it, the circus we're in but you dont really mean it" like... people say why go on in this life I'll end it, but then they dont ACTUALLY want to do it.. "shes affraid of the light in the dark". I always saw the video with it as the result of a trauma situation too...

  • @KimIsMissing i think she was in that abyss where you have no reason to live, I guess she wanted that baby so badly and perhaps nothing ever filled that void... disablement always hurts notice the twins at the end its a very profound lyrical and a very well done video wish one day I can make something alike...

  • *Tori running away from guy*

    Guy: Found you!

Tori: Oh no! How did you do that?

Guy: You sung all the time?

  • JAGUAR? XJ 5? XJ6?

  • @sabertoth lol, there was no xj5 :D '6' stands for the number of cylinders.

  • I've always loved her teeth.....and her music.

  • Its about having a miscarriage, not abortion.

  • saw her preform this last night, totally spine tingling

  • @TheParkerrr Me too!! Absolutely amazing. One of the best gigs I have ever been to

  • I love her lips *.* i wanna kiss her :D xD

  • Most incredible video I've ever seen.

  • I think that the glaciers and baby alive comment has more to do with the shattering of a preconception of confidence in fact the entire song seems to do with a fight between self confidence and lack thereof... of course i'm probably projecting :) bottom line, awesome song!!! like most of her work a modern day beethoven

  • those kids in the car didnt help her. That always made me so mad

  • Comment removed

  • @berrybellcosplay and it happens all the time, irl.

  • @berrybellcosplay , the kids in the car supposed to be her baby - It's Tori's unborn child because she was a smoker (during pregnancy). That's why she sing (about her) "she's addicted to nicotine patches"

  • ...this was back when she was still incredibly brilliant– even as she is backed by a rather mediocre band. This album, or more convincingly, "Boys For Pele", is the last of her better years– the rest I'm afraid, might very well be swept in the dustbin of music history. Even her music videos were so highly unusual & original. After this, it was kind of downhill for her...

  • What this song is about?

  • This song gives me CHILLS; just like any other song of hers. This woman is by far my favorite female artist and her music is brilliant. Its good to know that there is still good music out here like her's. So mystical and beautiful. The piano parts in her songs are breath taking and literally brings you into her song. I hope to see more of her soon!!

  • Arguably the BEST Tori Amos video ever. The song, the beat, the meaning (and the hidden message), are all perfect.

How come they don't do it like this now?

  • Sus colmillos. <3

  • Teacher showed us this in class, to explain poetry. We had to write down what we thought the lyrics meant, then she showed us the video. My meaning was not even colse <|3

  • @KarahSings I'm a teacher myself, and I think that's a brilliant idea. I'll do that with my next class. :)

  • @KarahSings More teachers should do that. It's great to see some teachers who DONT hate all comtemporary Art/call it degenerate etc. There are MANY modern artists who make actual poetry which has to be interpreted using one's brain that deserves academic attention. The Justin Biebers of that era just didn't get remembered. Old PPL complain that anyone looks at old style poems anymore, but aren't most song lyrics a form of poetry? Goethe, Shakespeare etc were once new, too.

  • "If the divine master plan is perfection, maybe next I'll give Judas a try..."

Oh, if I had a nickel for every time I can relate to that....

  • Somehow, Tori can look gorgeous even in bicycle shorts and a curtain lining :D

  • So glad I found this video. This is so beautiful. Cant stop listening!

  • She looks so damn sexy in this vid...

  • A life from a violent happening, lost it at 3months. This song speaks loads to me.

  • I can't relate to the lyrics, but I love her haunting voice and the video is AMAZING!

  • Amazing that this genius can entertain us and also heal all of us who have lost children................

  • thank you...

  • thnk ya!!!!!!!!!! i heard every word....

  • Tori Amos is art.

  • Tori Amos is one of my absolute favorite artists. She's simply a genius at what she is doing, and still there are a lot of people who haven't even noticed her. If it hadn't been for Johnny Cash she would top my personal top 10 :D

  • I love that woman!

  • I had a friend who lost their baby when I was ready to deliver. She was a month behind me and I prayed. Good news, she delivered about 1 1/2 years later!

  • Tori Amos in the 90's is like the Kate Bush in the 80's.

  • Tori Amos is one the best best songwriters to emerge in the last 50 years, and I always appreciated the incredible musicanship and structure of this this song: however, the lyrical meaning went way over my head. Now that my dear wife has miscarried four times (and perhaps more), I can say that I truly get this song....a little more than I care to.

  • @drummerstevedixon

I can't begin to know how you and your wife must feel. I was pregnant once, but became so by accident even though protection was used. When I had a miscarriage it was for the best, but it still felt sad. I can hardly imagine how you and your wife must feel. I don't pray, but please know that I will send loving-positive energy into the universe for you and your wife, and I will ask my friends and family to do the same.

  • Tori is the bestest!!!

  • lady gaga copies tori just as much as a she does madonna, i mean, right here in this song tori's referencing judas, addictions and mermaids, plus she's always talking about mary magdalene... all these things are what gaga is so into right now, image-wise and lyrics-wise... the way gaga plays the piano reminds me or tori, the music style too... not hating on gaga, but the influence is so obvious

  • @mariposasabrosa

Agreed. I wonder if she's acknowledged the influence, or if she's even realized it.

  • She perfectly represents my own kind of woman! Wanna Tori amos like girl!...

  • I'm addicted to Tori Amos lips!...

  • She is awesome!! and now she's coming to Milán!!!

she was my idol when I was young. i used to want to be like her..

    Impossible, she is inimitable.. :)

    Thank's for the video.!! : P

  • I absolutely love her teeth. One of the beautiful imperfections.

  • @rflmywfl1 Love her lips and teeth, and her hair curly, she looks so much different with straightened hair, I sure hope she doesn't nip and tuck anything, her face is too beautiful to alter anything, and then your looks change and they are not once what they were,I'm sure you can think of a few people, who look nothing like they did ex.(Vince Neil,Motley Crue)geesh he looks like he's smiling permantly and it's his only expression, plastic surgery sucks...it changes you,you know?!

  • @etherealmist76 it really is a shame, it is! I think people are beautiful always.

  • @rflmywfl1 I agree, aging brings on character, but even I look different, 10 years go by, and, holy cow,who hit the fast forward button...and there's no rewinding time, just appreciating what was, except I didn't know it back then,I guess that why we all live and learn,right?lol...Even so Tori is Timeless...

  • does anyone else think she looks like Naomi Watts with red hair?

  • @2violets Seeing how your assuming that Tori having abortions with no exact proof is full of nerve in itself. She talks about her miscarriages yes, but does she ever say that she had an abortion? Not from what I can tell. Is it your job to call judgement on someone's life? Nah. But we all have our opinions. And how is she complaining? She's expressing something that meant something to her. She has every right.

  • @HybridFalcon I think a number of people oftentimes forget that music is meant to be a medium for expressing our intrinsic voice.

  • @2violets ummm... wrong.

  • @2violets If the divine master plan includes people like you...maybe next time we'll give Judas a try.

  • @2violets Get real

  • @2violets Presumably? Show me proof. Besides I see nothing wrong with an abortion. If you didn't know she was raped by a very evil man. If your god takes such a beautiful woman...Lets her get raped after finally managing to get her carrer started, never having this evil man caught. Once she somewhat was okay made a company to HELP others who were raped, then your 'god' made her have a miscarriage? I hope YOU get raped. Sexual abuse is somthing you never get over. Damn Christians..

  • @starcatfri I'm sorry that some of you feel this way about God and Christians but I hope you come to learn that we are not all these extreme religious zelots. I also strongly dissagree with 2violets, God would never purposely make someone have a miscarrage because he has already paid for our sins and forgiven us. I have been raped and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, no matter what they have done because I'm not perfect or a saint I'm quite the opposite, but abortion isn't right either its murder.

  • @2violets The Lord must be quite a cruel asshole then, since that would mean he steps on the fingers of people who have just started to see the error of their ways. Besides, how do you know she had any abortions? It's the first time hear about any of this. Aren't you just making this up because she "dared" to point out that some branches of your religion repress women? You should save your breath to make the Christian community more friendly to women so less women will leave it and sing about

  • @KendrixTermina I do not agree with 2violets either and I'm not trying to sound like a know it all but you can't base the entire religion of christianity on only one of its branches, take catholicism for example it is completely different from non-denominational, we don't believe in purgatory or doing hail mary's etc. I also am not aware of any branch that does repress women but if you can find it and tell me I will research it.

  • @23025005490172 Sorry if it sounded like I was generalizing. I was upset. I know not all Christians are like that. It's not the religion, it's the people. A bad person will blow others up, a good person will be charitable. It really helps some people get over bad times, wether you see it as a good, powerful friend and protector helping them or as the belief being a crutch to channel their very own willpower. I do, however, think that some branches ()certainly NOT all of them) DO demean women.

  • @23025005490172 For example, my father is orthodox and he forced me, my sisters and my mother to wear a headscarf to church, just like some muslims do (again, SOME, any halfway developed muslim country like Turkey or some in southern and eastern Asia has at least partially outlawed it) and then theres catholicism which says that women can't be priests and wants us all back in the kitchen to pop out babies. It was really frustrating to me 'cause my father told me that i can only work

  • @23025005490172 úntill I have kids, and I wanted to be scientist since I'm five... also, again, SOME (not all) catholics say that the sole purpose of marriage is to produce babies (Which is why they're against homosexuals, but I've heard of cases of disabled and otherwise infertile people being denied a catholic wedding service) which is just sick. Any woman who is only married for status, to make babies, money or something like that is noting but a prostitute.

  • @23025005490172 We're so long over that, aren't we? People shouldn't be forced to get together for any other reason than that they want each other in some way. Also, they're against divorce, which Is just a horrible thing to do, because, it's like they want to be the woman something the man bought.

  • @2violets how they hated it. while I too think abortion is a horrible thing (albeit probably for VERY different reasons than you) it's awfully cruel to hate on the women who do it, they're just victims, too. Most do it because they're desperate and/or misinformed, don't know any better and a some of them even end up traumatized afterwards (Which DOES happen, and, if you consider abortion a valid medical procedure, is a possible complication patiens are seldom told about)

  • @2violets Also, it's not like anyone can decide what they feel and if she feels sad and cheated, then she feels sad and cheated.peroid. If you're suggesting ANYONE who isn't a crazy dictator, racist or mass muderer deserves something as horrible as a misscarriage happening to them, you must be a heartless punk. I don't know much about Christianity since I decided I was through with it a long time ago, but isn't there that one passage about not having vengeful thoughts and forgiveness?

  • @2violets "Turn the other cheek" "hate the sin, not the sinner" and similar stuff...? I think you should REALLY reconsider if you have the right to call anyone a hypocrite.

  • nice.

  • I love how she kind of has vampire teeth ;)

  • Wow. That video was amazing. I loved the song before, but now I also love the video.

  • Tori, I LOVE YOU!!!! thank you.

  • wow..beautiful song and video

  • POR FIN: ARTE!!!!

  • huh...and Ive always wondered why there was a double person in the car. I (think) I get it now.

  • Wow. That. was. AMAZING!! Bravo! I am just now finding this woman and I am already addicted!

  • does this remind anyone of AMC's the Killing?

  • I won a national kiteflying championship on the strength of this song and a flawless performance.

  • i too lost a baby halfway through pregnancy...i feel this song on a very different level... bless all the "little angels" and the families trying to cope with such devastation...u are not alone.

  • I think Tori's work is interesting and poetic, but it never ceases to amaze me how uncultured the masses are!

  • wow you really don't understand tori amos... thats sad... how many of you have been to her concerts

  • "she's convinced she could hold back a glacier but she couldn't keep Baby alive"

    Is just absolutely heart-breaking !

  • @Bluzme I had to point out what that meant to my male friend and huge Tori fan who did not understand the implication!

  • @Bluzme god..i mc in 09...i had two other babies..full term...all was good...broke my dang heart..

  • What a beautiful melody... I love this song.

  • (cont'd) This concept is reflected in Cruel by Tori from the same album. She says "I don't know why" throughout the song. Saying that she doesn't know why those angels don't come to save when you need them most.
