This is the classic opening of the TV show before it was "cleaned up" by taking out the gunfight scene... Pretty funny to take out the gunfight scene in a show called "GUNSMOKE"!
@jimaroo100 Encore Western has the Burt Reynolds/early Festus hour long up to 1966 black and white episodes and the opening gun fight is still there. I read that it was removed and replaced with Matt riding his horse as a result of the JFK assassination but someone was wrong apparently as it continued for several years afterwards. Must have been at least when the color episodes started.
It saddens me that a site like this attracts so many douchebags and they would not know who John Meston was..... he should be put in Televisions Hall of Fame. If you agree with my comment please write a brief note to the Television Hall of Fame....thanks.
My goodness, I will never forget the "classic" episodes written by John Meston who created the show. I can't understand why Mr Meston is not in the television Hall of Fame. If Rod Serling and Gene Roddenberry are there then John Meston should be there also.
I know but it s worth it to me and i meant full episodes of season 7 through 11 streaming to your comp. and dvd's of earlier versons of Gunsmoke, Roy Rogers, and many other tv classics.
@bobbybloo2003 Funny when Neflex first came out it was something like $2.99 a month, then $4, then $5, then suddenly now $10. Next year it will be $15. Thats what got us in this recession.. GREED! Its just like that Magic Jack.. $4.99 a year, now its like $19.99.
@CatFanInTheBathtub $3 a GALLON? Now thats more like $5. Ive never ordered or payed Netflix for anything. If I dont watch many movies, but if I do, ill just go out and BUY the DVD. :-)
Wish I knew the truth...first I have heard about Arvo Ojala...not looking for a debate, but decades ago I heard from a friend (independent film director in California) that the 'bad guy' in the opening sequence was actually someone named Rod Redwing. Supposedly Rod could draw "faster than a speeding bullet"...you know the drill. Either way...Arvo or Rod...our beloved Marshall Dillon would have 'bitten the dust'...OK...thank you James...NEXT?
@ELITEHAMSTER123 I know it, TV land was a premium channel. I remember when we 1st got cable 30 years ago, and there were NO COMMERICALS PERIOD on Nickoldeon, then one came on, then two, now too DOZEN! Now its like more commercials than the damn show itself. Makes me SICK! Yes, bring back nothing but classic TV, the original first aired reels, anf not the lousy syndicated / cut for commerical versions. I hate today's tv shows. 'Encore Westerns' is where I recorded this from guys. :-)
@Landaux I haven't had cable in over 5 years. But it sounds like TV Land is going the same direction as MTV, Disney Channel, Cartoon Network, etc. Damn shame.
At least we still have RTV. They even have Saturday morning cartoons!
The man in black on the street was none other than Arvo Ojala. Hollywood gun coach and fast draw expert that taught the likes of Gary Cooper, Paul Newman, and many other stars.
I actually met and befriended Arvo Ojala, the "bad guy" in the Gunsmoke opening sequence. He was a gun trainer and more for the cast of Silverado in Santa Fe, NM in 1985. They bought most of the guns used in the film from Allen Firearms, where I worked. I saw Arvo teach Kevin Kline how to spin a Colt revolver in his hotel room. Arvo could have outdrawn ANYONE, trust me. Marshall Dillon would have hit the ground long before he could have unholstered that 7 1/2" Colt - sorry! Arvo was a great man.
@eelalien I agree...but I still think James Arness was pretty quick...he's a big guy and moves kinda slow but he sure could draw fast. I think had he been a sheriff in the old west he could have taken care of most any bad guy coming his way.
As the story goes, which was actually confirmed by his nephew, there was a local yokel cop whose enthusiasm for handing out sppeding tickets far outweigh'd his IQ, while in uniform with his trusty 6 shooter strapped by his side, set out to prove to his young son that he could outdraw Marshal Dillon. Well he did in point of fact out draw the marshall only to blos away his brand new 25" color TV console in the process!!!
Did anyone else ever notice that in the opening shootout in the street of Dodge City, that Matt Dillon is out gunned. The other guy fires first, but apparently missed, then Matt shoots him?I always noticed that and years later when I became a law enforcement officer I always concentrated more on aim rather than speed and it honestly made be a very good shot and actually saved my life
My apologies I was at work and doing more then one thing. I did not realize the mistake that I had made. Thank you for pointing this mistake out to me. I also am not Hispanic.
The official CBS DVD collections are quite nice, although, I'm so broke I get them from the library. Seasons 1 through 3 are now available with new collections every 6 or so months. I was born in 1961, and, with the show in its 6th season, I'm sure I watched it as a baby and toddler. Later, if I had my pajamas on I could watch it. TV Land only shows the later ones. The original b/w half hour shows are a delight to watch, and, the extras include original sponsor spots where even Doc smokes!
I stand corrected movie/tv show when yr 8yrs 46yr is a heck of a long time ago, still liked the cowboy tv shows, into Bones,Cold Case,Fringe,Spooks, trust no one.
I wish someone could find the closing theme, as it appeared probably in 1959-1960 era,and post it. The scene, during the closing,as I recall, was a sketch of a wagon wheel leaning against something(I can't recall what that was)and it was in black and white. I caught the last 27 seconds of it on VHS, back in 1989,and transferred the audio onto audio tape for safekeeping. I would like to hear the entire theme,if I could just find out what year this was. I no longer have the VHS tape, just the audio
As far as I can see the backgrands on the closing credits have a 'wooden' backgrand. Somthing like boards in the backgraound. But in this season, in the closing credits, its like a town in a 'selowet' with graves by the side. In time im going to upload more.
Landaux, thanks for your reply. Maybe what you described is what I actually saw, and not the wagon wheel. I transferred the 27 second audio clip of it that I have, onto my computer, some time ago. If I could send you the 27 second clip, maybe you could determine the year, and see if you have it?
This was a television show on Saturday night. It was never a movie. CBS has line up back then: Steve McQueen as Josh Randall in Wanted Dead or Alive, Richard Boone as Paladin in Have Gun Will Travel, and James Arness as Marshall Matt Dillion. What a line up!
These were the days, down here in Newfoundland,it was just the beginning of a Tv era- how times changed. We never got full blown electricity until 1962. I remember well all the Tv westerns from that era.
ms kitty was the best. she would wait for hell and high water for mathew to come home. where are women like that today. of course festus did that too. maybe doc was a foursome?
Probably! Oh, and look bearnurse1, somebody gave me a negative for my comment. Watch out, somebody may give you one for yours! LOL Anyway, I have always thought Matt was so sexy! And honestly, I think if you cleaned up Festus a little bit, he would have been cute, too! Woof! (think I'll get a negative for that????) Have a good one, buddy!
James Arness is the one who kept the family name. In early high school plays, you will find Peter Graves credited as as "Peter Graves Arness", but somewhere long the line he dropped "Arness".
Thank You! for posting; This opening was changed after 22nd November 1963 because the 'good people' at the network didn't want to encourage any future assassinations; well!, good thinking! that worked, Huh!

James Arness was not only a hero on TV, but in real life as well.
He really was a giant of a man.
Arness is best remembered for his role on Gunsmoke, a show that lasted for 20 years because of him.
However, those who knew James will always remember him for his kind heart.
He spoke of his family, friends and fans at the end of his life.
He cared about everyone.
James Arness will be missed, but he will be loved even more as the years go by.
