I've recently found a nesting site of Peregrine Falcons in an old disused slate quarry. They are on the farside of the quarry (approx 300ft-350ft) away, up towards the top of the quarry face. I have a 7D Camera & 100-400 IS L series Lens. If i was to buy an extender. Would it have any effect on pics? Not as sharp? Slightly darker? As i have heard although they boost the focal distance they do have their drawbacks
Nice to see somebody else giving the 500D some love with good lenses - I've been using the 17mm TS-E on mine. (A bit rarer than the 400mm f/5.6 though).
The leaning effect from the video reminds me of Jacques Henri Lartigue's race car photograph. Could be used to good effect.
Does anyone know how to get the autofocus to work as we see in the video? I have the same set up as the video (assuming everything is Canon) and I can't get the tape trick to work with the 2x like I can with the 1.4x. Thanks
Great video. How did you get the 2x Extender to auto focus with the 400mm f5.6? My 1.4x works with the taping of the three pins. My 2x attempts to auto focus when I tape the same three pins but seems one step away from focus when it stops? Do you or anyone have any tricks that might work? Are there different pins I should be taping than the 1.4x?
@fullboxxskater well basically no but the more the merrier..its all about the sensor..if the sensor is small and has a lot of pixels its pointless, you gotta find a camera with a good image IQ and of course some quality lenses..hope this helped
If you buy 400mm lens for APS-C 1.6x body, STILL you have 400mm, but cropped 1.6x. BUT NOT 640mm... DOF/GO is still 400mm, but you lost angle of view. Like 640mm, but not REAL 640mm lens. Read more about that.
@myduis , yes a lot of folks don't realise that the 1.6 sensor is just a crop , its better on a DX sensor than on a FX sensor as the pixels are more densely packed onto the DX chip for the same number of pixels that is eg..12mp DX and 12mp FX.
I love the lens and the extender but 500d is terrible when it comes to recording movies due to its very slow autofocus. You can forget shooting moving targets.

I just got the 2x iii and used it with 100-400mm on rebel xs.
I tried to tape the 3 pins it will search but won't find anything.
Anyway it is ok for still shots of birds for now. Birds in flight is not easy with MF.
I am extremely happy with the IQ. It is hardly noticeable IQ reduction. I can get shots which I can never get before. Totally worth the 500 bucks.
Just need to burst new while fine tuning the focus. Still beat getting the actually 800mm for 12000 bucks. Getting a 1dsm3 next

What is the distance from the tripod to this roofs?
Is the AF motor still this noisy without the extender?
Can you use all AF points or you have some limitation from the extender?
Thanks!

So this becomes the equivalent of ~1200mm!

:] 800's like probably one of the most expensive lenses out there while the 500D's prpbably one of the cheapest cameras by canon
jeremychuayx 2 years ago
its not about the body....id rather cheap body + expensive lenses instead of expensive body + cheap lens

@myduis Soo right. I'm so fed up with morons who have a 50mm lens and a camera with an (imaginary) cropfactor of 10x saying "I've got a 500mm lens".

This is technically true, but you can't throwaway important stuff like pixel density...

Hi.
I'm curious as to how this works. .
I thought at an apeture that low the AF would not work.
It is making some odd sounds when it focuses.
What is that? And also, when you're focusing the lighting goes crazy?
I'm not sure how you filmed this, etc. . .
Could I get some more info?
Thanks.
