@unidan82 i've just been to london recently and saw the production with rachel! she was amazing!!! i like the english versions better than the german ones...i mean they both have great voices, no doubt. but the translations are just awful! the original words are just so much more emotional!

Willemijn is the Idina of Germany!!!!!! She is amazing :) i personally am a huge Wicked fan (Broadway version) but i lovelovelove Germany's version 10x better! And i actually understand it which is great :) its such a powerful musical in Germany if you know their history. This is the best song in the production :)))

willemijn verkaik is the best elphaba. i saw her live, it was breathtaking.

after the show, i bought the german soundtrack, obviously, as i am from germany. after i listened about a 100 times to "frei und schwerelos" i searched for the original, idina menzel version, and i don't like it at all. her voice is very good, but it pales compared to willemijn.

It is interesting how you alluded to the Nazi regime under which the German people were made to suffer b/c I am reading the book Wicked from which the musical is based and the author clearly states how his writing was inspired by the evil of the Nazis and by the events of WWII in general. The book is VERY dark. Of course, the original book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , written by L. Frank Baum is very dark as well.

I'm not a huge fan of this musical, but this song is good, and Willemijn is great! And yes, I can see why this would resonate so powerfully in Germany, considering the country's history. I have great respect for Germany, having done an exchange there, and I love their musical theatre :)

No, I never saw the show in Germany, let alone ever even been to Germany. And yes I am from the US. I am soo Jealous that you got to see her live! I have only heard her for videos she has a beautiful voice. I saw wicked for the first time last summer with Marcie Dodd as Elphaba and Helen Yorke as G(a)linda and they were both wonderful! A lot of Americans find German a very harsh language but I love it.
