Yes, press R to block and then square to use an item.

In MH2 for PS2 you were also able to use items when in attack mode with duals O.o

No, it's only inb japanese but you can play it with an english patch, if you have a custom firmware.

but any other weapon type will work too!

I fought nargacuga at 8 stars in the village.

In MHP3rd there is a low rank nargacuga, as you see...

I think you'll better use sns, because you can block with it ;)

You could have still used your original name. If you press select again after the keyboard for english letters, it will show them thinner and less spaced.

@NRod409 I had the same thoughts until I found out there is an actual pattern you can hear the sounds when he whips is tail he sort of steps back and waits for a moment before he does his lunge attack and looking at his wing placement shows you where he is going to strike left or right and he always goes right then left then right or vice versa. plus beating the back side of his wings always makes him fall over giving you more striking time.
