  • Bear. I say B-ay-er not B-ay-ah.. Deer. I say D-ee-er not Dee-ah.

Maybe its just cause i am Scottish. Fuck the haters.

  • I teach English in Japan.

I'm often an Assistant English Teacher (AET).

At Junior High School I assist the JET (Japanese English Teacher).

We get on really well. But when it comes to pronunciation the kids have noticed we sometimes differ.

    How do you pronounce banana?

    I'm an Australian, and I went ba-NA-na.

    He went beR-ne-neR.

He admits that his pronunciation was generally taught by Americans.

I want to tell the kids that pronunciation can vary.

Do the rules of phonetics vary at all?

  • @naganokumas Thanks for your questions. I'm not sure that the American accent would put an /r/ sound in the word banana. The pronunciation is /bəˈnɑ:nə/ in British English, /bəˈnænə/ in US English. The difference is a longer second vowel sound in British English. Variant pronunciation is found in different regional accents. Something like /bɜ:ˈnænə/ would be heard in Birmingham, UK. In normal fast speech many changes occur to vowel and consonant sounds, depending on linking sounds and clusters.
