This song is magic! I agree with so many of you...Extremely underrated!!! So cutting edge, yet still maintains the brooding, climbing & dramatic vibe that is only Roland!
I think this video represents how cruel people can be to each other, as that old saying goes, "being treated like a dog." The person in the video wearing the puppy shoes is a metaphor for the dog and suffers abuse from his caretaker (the male). He is then put in the pound in hopes of finding someone to love him, but is passed up. I think this video represents the lyrics to the song, "Low Life," as facing the cruel world without love, understanding, and respect.
I agree with everyone that Tomcats is fantastic-yes, Rolands music is a million times better than anything U2 ever did-it's an absolute crime that this album was overlooked. I love everything Roland does; the 80s, the solo 90s, the dark-Tomcats and the more fun/upbeat ELAHE. Roland is hands down THE BEST!!!
Roland Orzabal is truly one of the most underrated musical talents of the past thirty years. It's so incredible how he can be so good and so overlooked at the same time.
In my opinion this album is better than anything U2 has put out in over 2 1/2 decades. Then again U2 has been getting over on their name for that long. It's a shame brilliant artists like Roland have to take a back seat to much less creative artists.
great, love this song - and the album is great, better than the three TFF albums before it in my opinion. cos it's getting back to electronics I guess.
Very cool is right!!! I was there in Phoenix too. I agree with you - They were sooo happy I thought the same thing too they were in sync... It was a great night!!! They looked and sounded perfect!!! They kept commenting on the rotating stage. Loved the venue. It put U so close. I was in the 6th row. It was so nice to see them this way. Looking forward to when/if they tour again. Yes, Billie Jean was awesome! Memories Fade and Mad World the originals were just the best.. YAY!!! TFF.
Hey TFF Fans. What courage to produce a video that doesn't look like it came out of a Hollywood factory. Don't you agree? Pop music with bite - and the video compliments that. Well done!!!! More of that p l e a s e!
It listens to this hits and other songs in RADIO DISCOTEQUE. It enters in GOOGLE or YAHOO the words RADIO DISCOTEQUE and it discovers a new dimension of radio in Internet.
Very cool, just saw TFF in Phx and they sounded incredible.. They were both so happy to be on stage.. so in sync.. the MJ Billie Jean song was topped off a perfect night..
I LOVE this song... Roland has such a powerful and beautiful voice...mmmm :D :D.. and tee hee the video is cute and chilling and interesting all at the same time :)
the whole tomcats... album is amazing and unfortunatly very unknown (at least here in spain) the video is quite good too crazy but different, it,s kinda poetic the comparison between the low life we live nowadays and the dog life (i think roland is too good for today,s commercial fast-music!) ps hope there is a second part of this album? maybe someday... (mientras espero que algún día haya una 2 parte..)
He he, I cannot understand why many people complain about this video. Come on, it's wonderfully weird and silly. Wish more artists out there were this crazy. Roland is my spiritual brother. Hope for another solo album, considering that Tomcats was much better than the Happy Ending.. Go go go, Orzabal!
I saw this interview with Roland and the directior of this vid and I can no lonter find it on YouTube. Does anybody know what happened? Or maybe I forgot how to search for it properly. Any tips?
The funny thing is that Roland himself said he had no idea what was going on when he read the script and of course it had nothing to do with the vid but he thought it would work. Check the promo vid about the song. It was uploaded not too long ago. And yes, he was super hot speaking about the vid :D
Interesting that some can't get the "meaning" of the vid. Not leading an actualized life is the equivalent of being a lowlife, no better than a dog. Thus the world responds to you accordingly. Cuckolded, treated merely objectively and discarded when the user is finished. One is asking for such treatment when one allows it. He has used the "dog" image many times before when painting the same picture. Curt being a fake, lying to himself is the dog of "Dog's A Best Friends Dog." Pretty clear stuff.
You know how a video can make you like a song more or less? This video makes me like it less. I need to stop watching it, b/c I really do like the song!!!
Yeah, this video really puts me off although this song is just great. I don't know perhaps I am not that artistic enough to appreciate it. Perhaps the absurdity of this video befits the lyrics of the song.
groovy record, i also got mine thru resourcefulness, how come fans here in the philippines are getting neglected? is it by tff themselves or their record companies? how come ELAHE got no local release, so sad fans missed a great tff album, save the die hards who made their own way.
Roland you should come here to feel how well your music is appreciated, don't ask curt to come along he might just hold you back, from what I read he doens't like touring much and he's got other priorities.
In this part of the world (bacolod, philippines), it feels like I am the only surviving tff fan. My brother saw their performance in England while I am stuck here.
The saddest aspect of 'Tomcats Screaming Outside' album is that apart from hardcore Tears for Fears fans, very rarely does anyone know about it. It is an outstanding album that sounds very futuristic and retrospective at the same time for a number of reasons.
Got the Tomcats cd and I really like this song but the video makes me sad. There also needs to be more Roland in the video. He looks really, really good here.(But when doesn't he look good?)
first time i've heard this song, even if im blind, i will absolutely know that it's Roland singing. He is still the same, way back when TFF started. I really love his voice, the way he sings and everything about him. I love this man. Keep it up Mr. Badman...Luv Yah....Liz....P.S. Can you please, please have a concert here in Manila, Philippines? Looking forward on that.
1st time I heard that Tomcats CD went out, tried to look for a copy, but with no luck. But as you all know, die hard TFF fans like us can be creative sometimes. So I was able to get 1..Love all Roland or Curt's work.Hope they can get to perform even for just 1 night here in Manila Philippines.
Funny video, specially when Roland is so serious and the concept so goofy. This mixture of techno-electronica sounds very danceable, so I can see it being played in some club in London or Ibiza. It also brings memories of my days living in England. Roland's voice, as usual, flawless and top-shape. He is so good at dropping and rising his voice, a true gift. One of the best songs in Tomcats.
I agree completely. I love 80´s, but I can't imagine TFF only as a 80´s band. It´s a simplist target to define their work, specially Rolnd´s solo work.
I find this album so amazing, as everything Tears for Fears have always done. Both Roland and Curt are master musicians, but what I don't understand is the little amount of people that really like them.
A 10 for this song and for all off Tomcats, especially Hey Andy! too. Thanks for the video.
Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I used to think at one point on why they are not adored by a larger number of people. But now I have come to the conclusion that they mean a lot to people with special taste in music and subject matter. People like us have that taste and others don't. In a way that is good because then you wouldn't find fake fans of Tears for Fears anywhere whereas with most of the other bands it's more or less the opposite.
I actually like Roland's solo-work (Elemental, Raoul and Tomcats) better than the latest TFF work with Curt. It's rougher, better produced and less hippy-ish. No doubt that Curt is a gifted musician as well, but Roland's direction fits better with my own.
Why didn't the whole album get airplay? It was a well thoughtout group of songs that took a long time to get sounding like they do. Buy the album if you have not heard it. It's a very good "and well produced" piece of work, done at a time when Roland really didn't know what direction he was going in... I know, I was there throughout...... Peace Rol ... This is Just 1 of the great songs from the album (Tomcats), now this video may seem odd but simply shows the meaning of low life, and this album (Tomcats) i feel is a great acievement for Roland Orzabal, And for is a pleasure to listen to
This song should have hit #1 when it was released. It's a pity no one in today's world but us diehard TFF/Roland fans recognize his genius and versatility. However, this video is quite silly to me. Regardless, Tomcats is another Orzabal milestone. I only hope Roland comes out with another solo work soon; been waiting far too long.
I really dig this tune and actually heard the title track "Tomcats" on yahoo a few years back and have been hoping to find more of his material. I love this album - Wish there was more to listen too!
The cd is a masterpiece, like the man's entire body of work. How Low Life did not become a monster hit, let alone get airplay, I'll never know. This video, however, well, I'll just blame the producer. But it does say something about unwanted animals.

Roland is a genius and so underrated as a singer and songwriter.
TFF's phenomenal record sales speak for themselves, but it a real shame that they (and esp Roland) get lumped into the whole 80's band genre.
Roland's output post TFF-proper is anything BUT 80's pop.
* Raoul and The Kings of Spain
* Elemental
* Tomcats
