I do reject the idea of including utsul as Hui. utsul definitely deserve a separate ethnic groups. But as for Bai muslims, I'm not so sure that they should all be excluded. Because after the Hui rebel in Qing Dynasty, a lot of Hui fled southern China or even SE asian countries, married locally and settled down. You can find a lot of local ethnic minority people will tell you that their fathers' families are Hui.

Actually the ethnic conflicts in late Qing dynasty is the main cause of so few Huis today. Culture Revolution only suppressed the religion but didn't cause population loss of Hui.

in the 1940s, the KMT government took a census of around 50 million muslims, most of them were hui, only like 1 million uyghurs, in gansu alone there were 15 million, how did they all dissapear?

how come the uyghur and han population grow so much, but hui population shrink? uyghur and han in xinjiang were less than 4 million in 1950 and in xinjiang its 20 million people

the entire army of the 馬家軍 were hui, I do not believe they could get so many soldiers from a small population.

During KMT's time, the census of muslim population was problematic. Usually, if the warlord was a Hui, he'd force his entire army to learn Quran. Then he boasted a huge population of Muslims. But after the war, all his men would simply abandoned Islam. KMT was basically a failed government. I wouldn't believe their statistics during that time. The only true Muslim army was 馬家軍 as you mentioned, as that place traditionally is an enclave of Hui, Salar and Dongxiang.

Given that Muslim can have 4 wives and produce as many offsprings as they like, 10million is not that impressive. Btw, China has 1.3 billion people...so 10million is like 0.08% of the entire population. Most Chinese in China do not convert btw

Sorry, your theory of mass Han converting to Islam is never supported by any historical evidence. Actually, putting your claim in your story's history context, they conflict each other. Besides, the term Huihui implies nothing about "Han converting to Islam". You must make it up.

Also, there are many chinese muslims who not only followed the steps of their father's but also converted to Islam which is a fact. I agree with every part of your comments except your view towards the identity of hui. Firstly, there're no ethnic muslims nor ethnic chinese. chinese is a citizenship and muslim is religion follower. Hui is an ethnic group which is a subset of these two concepts. Secondly, still there's no evidence supporting the claim that mass conversion to islam in chinese history. There are strong evidences that inter-marriages contribute to the population of hui, tho.

In fact, your assumption that hui's population once dropped to 50000 is shaky at best. In Qing dynasty, the government was unlikely to draw a clear picture of the population of a rebelling ethnic group. So I really don't know where this figure is from. It more likely refers to the remaining rebelling force rather than the whole Hui. The whole "hui is han muslim" theory is something invented by some han chauvanism centered history revisionists at around year 2000

@KalgariePhleymz also try to read articles on muslim revolts in china. before there were 5 million, after many were slaughtered and left the country. in 1900 the population of hui people after the revolts was reported to be aproximately 50 thousand and less.. also hui werent only slaughtered by han people but actually the ugur brothers betrayed hui as they had more power and infuence and backstabbed hui. wipping out the majority of the people.

The 50 thousand you mentioned refer to the remaining Hui population in Shaanxi province after the revolt. Even today, the local population of Hui still hasn't recovered and contributes to less than 1% of the total hui population. But your point is almost like "since Zungar was annihilate, today china's 5 million mogolians must be some han chinese who converted to tibetan Buddhism and began riding horses".
