For all you out there who are Benny Hill fans . . . apparently "The Lad Himself" must've loved this number, as an instrumental rendition of "Room to Move" covered the last 3-4 minutes of the "Lower Tidmarsh Hospital Service" sketch from his very first Thames TV special in 1969.
Mayall put together some phenominal blues bands including a very young Eric Clapton. You must seek out and purchase the bluesbreakers albums and hear the off tracks. Room to move combined with Goin' back to California still blows me away.
I'm sure there were other British bluesmen before Mayall, but John stands out as unique. Others covered (copied) American blues (usually poorly). Mayall created his own. Like Paul Butterfield, Mayall has a unique, recognizable harmonica style and voice.
It's no accident that his sidemen were great. Their contracts stipulated 8 hours per day practice. Walter Trout told me he practiced "Oh, ALL the time!"
Isn't it wonderful to be BORN with so much TALENT? :D
@ironmanmc i have played for over forty years and have incorporated elements of Mayall, Butterfield, Jack Bruce and a couple of others into my own style, but true playing comes from the heart, something i learned along the way, long live the blues, peace!!! the bluesman ron

I am just wondering if he was the first British blues man?.
Some people think it was a dwarf that used to jump on the back of hanging criminals in the middle Ages, but I disagree because he wasn't known to be especially musical.
So is John Mayall the first and Greatest British bluesman anyone?
Why hasn't he been knighted yet?.
Why at 76,is he still taking time to talk to his his fans after a concert?
i just missed john mayall at wimble stadium in 1971. but not to worry i saw jonny and edgar winter, with rick, mott the hoople. stone the crows, pink ferrie at crystal palace. thoes were the days.
In June '83, I was in London. Mayall was scheduled to be at The Marquee Club! Called up for tix, but was told he had cancelled. (don't recall the reason) Man, was I disappointed . . . Mayall in LOndon at the Marquee...WOW!!!!!! Oh well. :(
uff, i had an expierence similar to yours in 2006 when i went to Madrid to see him, but he was ill so it was cancelled -.- but then the next year he came to Granada (my city) and i saw him and he gave me his sign! and buddy withington (his guitarist) gave me his pick! amazing... he is the boss
@paladin520 In Lund, Sweden -86. Was queing (had a ticket) for the venue when suddenly someone knocked on my shoulder. When I turned around it was Mr mayall saying. "Excuse me, band coming through."

The original recording of this takes me back to the days when I used to listen to records; before the Jean-Michel Jarre's CD appeared.

First comes the late Alexis Korner.
Father of Mick Jagger, Eric Burdon Robert Plant, Steve Marriot and other 50 greats.
Of course John had his own school, the Bluesbreakers and everybody knows the history.
In the future all this will be studied in the art schools of music, universities etc.
andrewtournavitis 1 year ago
@andrewtournavitis Thank you,
I have, to my shame, never heard a bar of Mr Korner's music, but have read that he was a great influence.
In todays YouTube age,I have little excuse!.
As far as Mayall goes, think it will look silly "in the future" where scholars of his may possibly be Knighted, when he was not!.

He is currently touring my country to great reviews!.
Many critics have noted that he will stay long after the concert and sign autographs!.
He doesn't have to at his age,but it is neat (even unexpected) that he still wants to please his fans!
