Did he just say that there's only about 10000 professional astronomers in the world? Damn... all that wasted potential in humanity. Why can't we educate everyone in the knowledge of the universe at a young age, instead of religious nonproven stories? Lot less crazy people, lot more thinking people after a generation or two.
@PainSurgeon first of all without faster than light travel most of their discoveries are somewhat unimportant. Second, after you die, and someday you will die, the spots on other planets won't mean a flying toss but whether there is a god or an afterlife will. The sad thing is the lack of philosophizer and training not astronomers.
Don't get me wrong I love this stuff but I don't think its the most important thing out there.
@badikoy I think your hypothesis has merit. Not just global warming, but universal warming! Probably because we are burning fossil fuels...Maybe we could send a few select politicians up to investigate.
thank you jupiter for averting an earthly catastrophe,"all hail jupiter", funny that statement is quite reminiscent of what our early brethen once spouted. full circle?
@humanity6fl9 That's kind of funny. I was just lately thinking of starting a local chapter of the cult of Dionysus. Think of it everyone getting together donating money then passing around a couple of bottles of communion wine or bandy or run or whiskey and then writing it off on our taxes.

To see a partial summary of the clear evidence that the Apollo moon missions were faked, google "The Naked Scientists". In the "New Theories" section of the forum there's a thread entitled "Did We Land on the Moon?". The summary is on page 15. It's the 7th one from the top.
Once people have seen the hoax evidence, there's nothing anyone can do to make them believe we went to the moon.
I don't know if she's realized how much significance that last statement has towards astronomy, physics, and science in general. She says it so casually and with a smile, but like BGenerous stated, it is indeed the best line ever IMO and it describes the curiosity of "looking up" perfectly. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to use that as my new motto from now on: "Let's figure out how the Universe works."
2:00 - Is that the infamous creationist pamflet "atlas of creation" in the background???
Hope even astrophysicists now just as good as evolutionary biologists that this is written by a scienticfic illiterate: the dubious interior designer/islam fundamentalist Adnan Oktar (pseudonym: Harun Yahya) who is flooding european highschoolteacher with antiscientific propaganda... no one knows where he gets the money to do it.
Seeing that pamflet even caused a paranoid skeptical frown with regards to the professor's argument about Jupiter... he made it almost sound as if the solar system was "designed" to protect earth for incomming meteorites.
It must be great as physicists to be able to talk about your scientific discipline without constantly having to pay attention to your words... biologists are constantly aware that what they say can be misinterpreted or misquoted by creationists.
@jalgjalg I prefer to think of this solar system to have been "chosen" for the Latest iteration of sentient life. there is a fine line between the arrogance of saying there is a god and the arrogance of saying there is no god and I am right.

Those all to true words seam to me to lend credence to Agnosticism.
I wouldn't say just as likely, since we are such a small point for Jupiter to fling something towards us when compared to everywhere around us that objects could be flung towards.
Jupiter stop big object doing bad things to earth.
That sound strange.

Jupiter and Venus are merely going through puberty. I'm sure they would appreciate it if you didn't announce their acne so publicly.

so what? you can read a book and analyze it so as to point out its incoherences.
for instance : philosophers and historians can read mein kampf without being nazis.
(sorry for the late answer BTW)
