Except Bernie Parent. Who walks on lava. While juggling chainsaws.
And I know I was only 8 years old when they won the first time, but how did I miss just how HOT Bernie was? Damn, that man was FINE ...
This is a great video I love the flyers they are my favorite hockey team this made me have alot of respect for the flyers my favorite part is when Clark smiled and he only has like 2 or 3 teeth
I saw The Flyers beat the California Golden Seals 10-0 in their baby blue jerseys and white skates, lol! I was 7 or 8 in '75. My father had seasons tickets for 30+years. I saw games on weeknights, Saturday afternoons and Sunday evenings for 20 years. Section S, Row 6, seats 3 and 4. You could not get any closer to the action back then.
I'm nowhere close to a hockey fan, I don't hate it its just not for me. BUT this is a very well done documentary, and makes me care about hockey for the hour or so its on. ha :D
My absolutely favourite part of this documentary is how they pointed out that Colin Campbell called upon the Flyers to take out the Russians after they walked through his more favoured teams. Making an appearance in the dressing room before the game to plead with them to win the the league. This all being shown after Campbell woefully handed the cup to them in 75. :D
The NHL was becoming a boring as dead in hell reoccuring novelty for more than a decade before the Broad Street Bullies era Flyers. Every other sport and form of entertainment including music by the early 1970s was already by 1970-71 way more entertaining than the NHL was. But the Flyers put the Big Thunder and Lightning Excitement back into the NHL!!!!!!!!!Slapshot the Movie 1977 was actually based on the Broad Street Bullies Flyers.
The Flyers should not have to apologize to anyone. The NHL was becoming boring by 1972 with nothing new and entertaining to watch. Something like it has been today for the last 10 years. I'm not mentioning this as a Flyers fan but as a Habs fan. The Flyers by 1973 were the best thing to happen to the NHL since after the early 1960s.
As a Bruins Fan, even though I hated these Flyers then, still deep down I always had a respect for a team that would rather fight than to just play Hockey. Sure Our Big Bad Bruins got the best of these "Broad Street Bullies" in a fight, but the fact that they love to rough house won my respect for these Flyers. And I hope that the Flyers win the Stanley Cup soon. At least before Montreal win the cup again. THE CANADIENS CAN PISS OFF!
Clarence Campbell and the NHL seem to forget that the league was a dirty one long before the Flyers arrived. In fact, it was because of the dirty play of the St. Louis Blues that the Broad Street Bullies were assembled. If the league had policed itself when it should have, there would have been no BSB. But the NHL's "dirty little secret" (brutality) was exposed by the Flyers and Ed Snider who showed that they had had enough of the league's BS and handed them their collective asses. Problem?
@BD3150 There's truth in what you say, for example, The leagues' greatest player to that point, G. Howe was a vicious dirty stick player, and the B's had some scum bags like Sanderson and Green. However the Flyers made violence a tactic to win and drove the league to all time lows of games filled with violence and brawls and played up to the fans fantasy blood lust. It took major rule changes by NHL to clean this up and led to a new era of a league graced by superstar talent like Gretzsky.
@DonQwantsyou Gretzky would never have lasted 1 year in the old 6 team NHL.He ran up big numbers in a league with so many weak teams he became everyones all time greatest to those who do not know better.Gordie Howe,Bobby Orr ,and others from that era were much better, but Gretzky played in such a watered down league everyone thinks he was the greatest.Gretzky would never have been a top player in that era he had no balls. The players would have crushed him back to the minor leagues.
@BD3150 I grew up watching hockey in the '70's. True, the NHL was a rugged game during the era of the original 6. The BSB took it to it's logical extension, Fred Shero, who should be in the HOF, did a great job of coaching. But the game changes, much to the chagrin of Don Cherry, the game would not be where it is if it did not make those rule changes. But the basics still remain; finish checks, eliminate TO's in the offensive zone, play solid defense. There will always be enforcers
@BD3150 Larocque, Probert, Schultz, Gillies, and Simon to name a few, but the world will see also the Gretzkys, Lemiuexs, Crosbys, LaFluers and Richards that is the beauty of hockey. I've watched this game for over 40 years, I still tear up when I see the Stanley Cup champion taking a lap around the ice because I know, as well as hockey fans everywhere know what it took to get there and the history of those who came before. It truly is "The Holy Grail".
We don't have to apologize to nobody! Great documentary fine job George Roy &Liev Shrieber.Habs won in 76&3 others but who cares? There is know story in that. This tells a great story. This is the hockey I played growing up not this watered down can't finish a check crap they are throwing at NHL fans now! Gordie Howe&Ted Lindsey knocked out more teeth than Shultz ever did & there in the Hall of Fame! The Habs had 1 of the biggest nitwits of all time John Ferguson! KO'D by Simon Nolet !
@MrGoflyers I don't totally agree that todays game is garbage. The Bruins used similar intimidation tactics to emarginate the Sedin sisters in last years final to win the Cup.They are a tough physical team that combines skill, balance, and toughness which is now playing awesome hockey. Other teams like the Flyers , Red Wings , rangers, must stand up to them physically to have a chance to beat them.
@MrGoflyers I saw my first Flyers game at the age of 7 in 1974. My brother had to lift me up in Section U to see Bobbly Clarke and the Boys as they took the ice. I was HOOKED on hockey. Saw them win The Cup on tv in '75, went to the Soviet game in '76, was at the final game they lost to The Habs 5-3 in '76, Brian Propps winning goal in '87 to tie the Oilers 3-2...... Those were the BEST days of my 44 year life, bar none.
@CHHSE1986 I grew up in Detroit my father took me to the Olympia Arena to see some of the greatest players of all time in the 60's.After the game he would take me to Grand Time Tavern so I could meet such greats as Howe,Delvechio,Lindsayand my favorite player Brian Watson lifetime memories! We moved back to Levittown and the Flyers became my team snuck into Stars game saw Dorny's goal.Went to 74,75 parades Chestnut St.getting served at 18 Saleski's hand crushed mine great memories!
@MrGoflyers , the NHL's pretending. They don't really care about violence in hockey, or else they'd make just body checking illegal and mandate full facemasks. They want the violence to continue while fake-clucking their tongues about it. And the new rules have ended up harming the game -- it's nothing but scrums in front of the net nowdays, because you can't clear the crease out anymore. The only thing they could do right now to improve things IMO is go to a bigger rink.
@BIGRED224FOREVER Lmao! Shanahan was one of the league's best power forwards with 600 goals in his career. You clearly don't know what you're taking about so don't even bother responding
@indy66 Hey nitwit they spend 5 minutes at the end talking about that series. You are a real dope and the Habs had plenty of there share of goons over the years,Purist my ass! Its hockey and they wear equipment. The Habs have won plenty of cups and deservedly so.The flyers won 2 big deal get over it and move on.It was a great time to watch real hockey when players played with some balls, and the game was exciting not this pussy stuff there shoving at us now.The Habs are ancient history RIP
@MrGoflyers thats right.......they act as if montreal is the holy grail...I got another for ya , he wants to mention the flyers are forever in the penalty box, well montreal is always in the penalty box for 5 min plus 2 for the cheap shot on propp and the way they treated patrick roy...a guy who won them 2 cups and sold him down the river pretentios bastards!
@indy66 remember the games were decided by 1 goal there genius! The 76 team was not a failure by any stretch "we need you to represent this league and defeat the soviet team, the league needs you" Clarence campbell the conn smythe went home with reggie who combined for 80 goals that season! 61-(19)........nough said!
Great documentary especially against the Russians and Kate Smith with that extra push with me being that heart broking eight year old kid loving Bobby Orr and the Bruins.Larry Robinson dominating and showing why he is a hall of famer after the two cups that Philly won.Bobby Clarke being the ultimate ballbreaker hall of famer. The Flyers help put the NHL on the map and there is always a blessing even in the villian.lol.
If you watch "Conflict on Ice" (I have a copy), just before the drop of the puck, The narrator speaks of the slight roster adjustments and show the roster for that game. If you recall, the Soviets' failed to beat the NHL's best three teams. In short, their best was unable to beat our best, which makes the over-all results considerably less than important.
I remember seeing an interview with Wayne Gretzky awhile back, which dealt with this topic.I cant remember exactly when, but it was either before the olympics or hockey world championship and I believe he was the coach of team Canada. He said that when the eastern Europeans play rough, they're considered tough. When Canada and the US play the exact same way, they're considered dirty.I think Russia was the bully who messed with someone tougher, got their ass kicked and went home crying to mama
I've been watching hockey for 30 years & I know the game was meant to be played physically & intimidation is part of the game. But what you had with the Flyers was dangerous. You had players who were out of control to the point they didn't care if they maimed you. Even when players are physical & mean there has to be a level of control where you have some respect for the opponent as a human. It's a thin line & the Flyers crossed it. Sad thing is that it overshadows the fact they were talented.
You are over-reacting. By NHL standards, Van Impe did not hit the Soviet player as hard as the "dive" experts displayed. They have ALWAYS pulled stunts, intimidated officials, manipulated games, etc. Leaving the ice is something they have done SEVERAL times prior to playing Philadelphia. The Flyers had eight players on the roster that could score over 20 goals a season (even in the penalty box). The Russians/Soviets always cross the line, just watch the Summit Series of 1972 - inhuman.
Van Impe's hit was clean, no doubt about it. I'm not talking about that. That's a good play. And I know the Russians had some VERY DIRTY players as far as spearing and stick antics.
At 46:48, Mr. Clarence Campbell sure didn't look pleased when he had to hand over the Stanley Cup to the Flyers indeed. Looks like he was acting like he was at a funeral. Hmm, I wonder if Gary Bettman will have that same reaction if he had to hand over the cup to a Canadian club? Hmm on second thought ,Bettman would make a spectacle out of himself if one of the NHL's Canadian clubs were awarded the Cup.
Ironically, several players on the Flyer roster which won the Cup in"74 were ex Bruins, ie. Lonsberry, Parent, Watson, McLeish, Dornhoefer, and the next year Leach. B's were so loaded they let these guys go.
@DonQwantsyou They were loaded prior to expansion, but who the hell wasnt, there was only six teams?! That said, I agree the Bruins were stacked, but it displays that the league was ripe for expansion.
The Big Bad Bruins of the late sixties and early seventies were also one of the most talented teams of all time. Four Hall of Famers. How many HOF players did the Flyers ever produce. maybe Clarke, that's it.
@DonQwantsyou Are you serious? Clarke, Parent, Barber.....HOF's (am I forgetting anyone)? Next time you post, stop drinking or know what you are talking about.
Good question, Montreal tied the Red Army team 3-3 in December 31st, 1975 during the tour. The Soviets combined their Red Army and the Soviet Wings all-stars only for the Flyers game, thus the Flyers were the only team to play their best. Red Army was 2-1-1 while the Soviet Wings were 3-1. Both 1975 Stanley Cup finalist were the only teams that won during that tour (Flyers/Sabres).
Are you sure the Soviets combines the stars from Red Army & the Wings to play the Flyers? There's no mention of that on the wikipedia page about super series 76. The Sabres really crushed the Wings 12-6 on January 4th, but on the night prior to the Red Army-Flyers game the Wings beat the Islanders (who were already a very good team) 2-1. That was January 10th & the Red Army Philly game was the 11th. I think that the Flyers simply beat the Red Army team, which was still a great accomplishment.
My rationale behind this is that if the star Wings players played in Philly on the 11th along with the star Red Army players, then the Wings star players couldn't have been in the lineup vs. the Islanders the night before. Since the Islandes only lost 2-1 to the Wings I think the Wings had their stars in that game vs. New York, because without them there's no way the Islanders would've lost. I could be wrong though. Plesse feel free to comment. I was only 3 at the time so I didn't watch it,
the RED ARMY team destroyed all nhl teams including the NHL all star team. had the bullies not beat them it would have been an absolute embarrassment. the RED ARMY players didnt want to play that game tho and the russians forced them to come back out, you can see how that may effect a team.
We have released the second teaser for the film. Based off of the responses we receive, we will determine the project's outcome. So please take a look:
@bleedorange2332 hey bleed, don't be silly. the Montreal Canadians are hockey historys' greatest team. about the only team the Flyers could NOT intimidate
who's the nerd that said " they are in the penalty box forever, because of the way they played"......Has to be from toronto or boston....friggen nerd!!
this is great!!! I had the pleasure to watch this documentary when it first aired on HBO... Not a hockey guy, but I am a sports fan, so I can appriciate this documentary... thank you for posting! =)

"There gonna twist'em like we do to these pretzels"says the pretzel dude!
Thats what the flyers did to every team!

@ExplodedFish B.S Flyers just lucky in that series with B's. Parent, an ex Bruin saved their ass!

Hmm on second thought ,Bettman would make a spectacle out of himself if one of the NHL's Canadian clubs were awarded the Cup.
debumaiya 4 months ago
@debumaiya I think he would be like "Fuck... again?!" If he had to hand it over to Montreal!

I didn't know that the Flyers went the goon route because of how the Blues used to beat them up in the playoffs in their early years.

The Flyers were some badass motherfuckers. Most brutal hockey team eveeeeeeeeeerr
DESPlERRE 5 months ago 10
Ironically, several players on the Flyer roster which won the Cup in"74 were ex Bruins, ie. Lonsberry, Parent, Watson, McLeish, Dornhoefer, and the next year Leach. B's were so loaded they let these guys go.
DonQwantsyou 5 months ago
@DonQwantsyou They were loaded prior to expansion, but who the hell wasnt, there was only six teams?! That said, I agree the Bruins were stacked, but it displays that the league was ripe for expansion.

The Big Bad Bruins of the late sixties and early seventies were also one of the most talented teams of all time. Four Hall of Famers. How many HOF players did the Flyers ever produce. maybe Clarke, that's it.

@ggqbc the red army didn't destroy all NHL teams. I don't seem to remember tgem destroying the montreal canadiens..

@TMNTPIZZA
Both 1975 Stanley Cup finalist were the only teams that won during that tour (Flyers/Sabres).
woolhat1 4 months ago
Are you sure the Soviets combines the stars from Red Army & the Wings to play the Flyers? There's no mention of that on the wikipedia page about super series 76. The Sabres really crushed the Wings 12-6 on January 4th, but on the night prior to the Red Army-Flyers game the Wings beat the Islanders (who were already a very good team) 2-1. That was January 10th & the Red Army Philly game was the 11th. I think that the Flyers simply beat the Red Army team, which was still a great accomplishment.
dzanier 3 months ago
My rationale behind this is that if the star Wings players played in Philly on the 11th along with the star Red Army players, then the Wings star players couldn't have been in the lineup vs. the Islanders the night before. Since the Islandes only lost 2-1 to the Wings I think the Wings had their stars in that game vs. New York, because without them there's no way the Islanders would've lost. I could be wrong though. Plesse feel free to comment. I was only 3 at the time so I didn't watch it,

@TheFlair8 he was talking about the last time they won that was even close to the Bullies era.
TheDaleDenton 5 months ago
the RED ARMY team destroyed all nhl teams including the NHL all star team. had the bullies not beat them it would have been an absolute embarrassment. the RED ARMY players didnt want to play that game tho and the russians forced them to come back out, you can see how that may effect a team.
ggqbc 6 months ago
@ggqbc You mean the Flyers organization forced them back out.
