It was a great day when adults actually cared about kids and how to teach them things on TV. I love that so many of you loved these classics too! Thanks for sharing!
@MsPandaRosa I wondered the same thing too and I posted a comment on that video called "Fred, Get Me A 20" wondering if that was the same gorilla on that video who loves numbers a lot where here on this skit, he helped the painter paint a number and on the "Fred, Get Me A 20" skit, he was holding a number.
I noticed that - most of these Mad Painter skits ended sadly (like #6 when he got the cake smashed in his face, #9 & #11 when the numbers got erased, the #3, etc.)...but this & #7 were happy endings! I used to love these skits!!
LOVE the gorilla's "WTF" double take (0:38 - 0:41) and the Mad Painter's "oh s***" facial reaction (0:53 - 0:55). A wonderful little comedic gem! Considering the "recycling" of actors in the skits, I wonder if that was actor Jerome Raphael in the gorilla costume?
I wonder maybe if the painter's stencil number "5" fell out of his pocket of his painting smock at 1:09 because I remember the painter putting his stencil number "5" in his pocket at 0:36 before he painted his painted "5" onto the ball. I'm sure he didn't put his stencil "5" in his pocket and then quickly put it on the ground since he was too scared and covered his face while the gorilla was finishing painting the "5."
This Mad Painter #5 skit helped me to learn how to write the number 5 when I was very young. When I was very young, I always used to try to write a "5" but, everytime I would try, I would always make a capital letter "S" since I had difficulty trying to make a "5." Then I remembered and said to myself, "wait, I remember the painter and the gorilla making a "5" together, let me do what they both did." First I did what the painter did, then what the gorilla did, after that, I made a "5" well.
Yes, the painter taught me a lot too. He actually died on December 1, 2008. I'm not sure what he died of. I know that he was 70 years old when he died, and he suffered from a disorder called acromegaly but, I'm not sure if acromegaly kills people or not. It was in his home where people found him dead. Also I agree, may he rest in peace.
Yes, the painter (played by Paul Benedict) did the voiceover in the background too as he was starring in the Mad Painter skits. (I might be wrong but, I think once he got the acromegaly, his voice changed a little bit too).
Hey. I just got that 40th anniversary book last night. And I read that they used your comment on the page that talked about the Mad Painter! Congrats!
Thank you. Wow, that's amazing. I didn't know that they used my comment about how this skit helped me learn how to write the number "5" very well after seeing what the painter and the gorilla did together.
I also just got the 40th anniversary book, and I found my comment about the Mad Painter on page 244. The book also came with a DVD disk showing scenes from episodes from 1969-2009 and it had one full episode from 1969 (I think that was the year) but, I didn't see the Mad Painter #5 skit on the disk. However, even though I didn't see the skit on the DVD disk and even though the directions on how to write a "5" wasn't on the page, I hope when little kids read my comment, it will also help them.
When I was watching SS, I hadn't learned anything about the piano yet, but I knew that the painter has a very distinct theme. You hear it right after he says, "I'm going to paint a 5."
I was wondering the same thing. I know that he was 70 years old when he died (it was in his home where people found him dead) and he suffered from a disorder called Acromegaly but, I'm not sure if Acromegaly kills people or not.
Does anyone know if the gorilla was played by Jim Boyd (Paul the Gorilla) or does Paul look different than this gorilla? If not, then who was it? Thanks
For those that know better it's ok, But there are some kids how may not know better that is a person in a gorilla suit. And if they don't know better or at all may cross animal cages at the zoo with the gorilla. A real gorill could badly hurt someone so with all that they should write don't try this at a real zoo at the botom.
That's true. I know in this skit as the painter went into the gorilla's cage and picked up the ball to paint a "5", the gorilla was very nice to help him paint the "5", and the gorilla was nice to give him a high 5. However, if someone in real life went into a gorilla's cage and picked up one of their toys, the gorilla would be very mad and would squeeze the person's arm very hard and might break their arm or the gorilla would choke the person badly saying "how dare you enter my home."
And please, folks, PLEASE do not feed Trix to rabbits... they are very sensitive creatures, and should only eat lettuce or carrots. And while we're on the subject, toucans DO NOT eat Froot Loops. And if you have Honey Nut Cheerios, do not go near any bees, because they can sting you.
I think giantpanda and afriendofbean need to get off of this planet QUICK! Please board a one-way spacecraft for Pluto, bon voyage!
Parents, if you have neighbors that see the world as they do (major lack of perspective with questionable mores and judgement), KEEP YOUR KIDS AWAY! They'll destroy them.
If they're worried about gorillas at the zoo, what would they think about Big Bird? Is it some ferocious child-eating hawk or something? And remember, kids, don't look in trash cans, because Oscar the Grouch might be in there, and he might not be too friendly. So stay away from trash cans and giant yellow birds who try to teach you to read and count.
If I am giving my opinion on what I saw, it's not necessary for you to tease giving nonsense talk about Trix, Froot Loops, Honey Nut Cherrios, Big Bird, and Oscar. People have a lot of times given their opinion on YouTube skits, especially these Sesame Street YouTube skits whether the skit is a cartoon, for comedy, a skit with muppet's, or any other reason. People always give their opinion on a certain scene or spot on whatever they saw or heard and how they felt.
I am just giving my opinion. A lot of people have given their opinion on YouTube skits, especially these Sesame Street YouTube skits whether the skit is a cartoon, for comedy, a skit with muppet's, or any other reason. Thanks for posting this - now I can see all of the Mad Painter clips on my copmuter! As WillWatchAnything has noted, the one for #2 (sailboat) is not on YouTube. However, that one can be seen at Sesame Workshop's Web site for videos. Again, thanks jonnytbirdzback!
It was scary how the painter walked inside the gorilla's cage since in real life if someone walked inside a gorilla's cage with a gorilla in it, the gorilla wouldn't help that person, give them a high 5, or put their arm around the person just like the gorilla did everything here. But in real life if someone went into a gorilla's cage, the gorilla would probably use it's strength to strangle someone to say "get out", even if the person picked up a gorilla's toy, like the painter did here.
Yes, that does make a lot of sense. Now I can understand why the painter looked like he was pretending to lick his paint brush with paint on it. Probably the gorilla thought that the painter was smudging popcicle juice onto the toy ball. When I first saw this skit when I was very young, and saw how the painter looked like he was licking his paint brush at 0:57-0:58, I said to myself, "why's he doing that, you're not supposed to lick paint."
This skit is great. When I was very young, I used to think at 0:57-0:58 that the painter was licking the paint on his paint brush but, I don't know why it looked like he was doing that before handing his paint brush when all it looked like that the gorilla was just putting out his hand to say "give me the paint brush." I wonder if the painter did that at 0:57-0:58 to say "here take the paint brush and have fun painting whatever you would like." Or he was saying "just don't hurt me."
I loved this clip. It is my favorite Mad Painter clip. Speaking of nimbers and gorillas, do you remeember a skit where a detective is sent out to find a #20 and runs into a gorilla at the end? I haven't seen it in over 25 years.
The gorilla reminds me of Paul from "The Electric Company", both old AND new.

what zoo was this filmed at?

I might be wrong but, since Sesame Street was filmed in New York, this skit might be at one of these zoo's:
1. Central Park Zoo
2. Bronx Zoo
3. Wildlife Conservation Society-Bronx Zoo
4. Barking Zoo
5. Queens Zoo Wildlife Center
