I think it's a shame that black people need permission to be as they are. I wear my hair natural because that's how it grows out of my head. I took the time to learn how to care for my hair and style it that's the whole "secret" for making the hair "manageable." How ever you choose to wear your hair natural or relaxed love yourself then it won't matter what other people say.
I couldn't cope with my natural texture and being natural was so expensive. I spent way more money time and effort. being natural than i ever did being relaxed & that's real.
God bless all you beautiful natural sistas, i wish i could've been successful at being natural too but i guess it's really not for everybody. =^(
I agree with everything that you said about having to have the necessary confidence to go natural. But I really hate the fact that it is such a life-altering experience you know? I mean I'm not having a baby or getting married, I have just decided that I will no longer alter the texture of my hair. What's so revolutionary about letting my hair grow??? I've been natural now for 11 years, and I still roll my eyes everytime somebody says some ignorant mess.
AMEN SISTAH!! CONFIDENCE,TRIAL & ERROR,PATIENCE & ALL THE GREAT POSITIVE PPL ON YOUTUBE = A HAPPY NATURAL WOMEN ..OH YA ACCESORIES, ACCESORIES, ACCESORIES!!
I agree with you point however, I had to go natural because my hair broke off from the relaxer. Nonetheless, I decided to with the natural look but my still continues to look dry, brittle, bald and just plan ugly. I have tried going to the local natural store "Urbanbella" and I believe they really did not know what to do with my texture of hair. Now dont get me wrong, I think they have good intentions. My hair is ugly. What can on do with Niggar cant ya dont wannn do nothing hair ?
You are so right when you said " going natural is a whole new ball game" because when first went natural I didn't know what to do. I was treating it like a perm sleeping with out a scarf... i know can anyone say NIGHTMARE! and I have really tight curls so when i went to sleep without covering and twisting it up first in the morning it would be like a DRY CARPET seriously. Now imagine what it was like to comb that out, but now i know how to take care of it so it's not so bad:) anyways great vid:)
Amen Sunshine!! Because there are some people out there who make some of the craziest statements! I love my natural hair, even when i'm having a bad hair day! my hair doesn't do the coily looking curls everyone is trying to get. i get the big soft cottonball looking puffs, lol! however i do have all kinds of textures going on in my head and it is very frustrating. but i will not flatten my hair again!
When I went natural no one knew bc I wore a weave until I felt my hair was long enough that I felt confident in it. so i didnt have that awkward phase. I believe anyone can go natural. But it is well know that longer hair is most preferred by society. I say take as much time as you need to adjust to your hair, b4 you rock it.
@nylaa21 thnk u 4 sayin dat. i hv been wearin weave after weave all school yr. bcuz im like 2 mnths natural and my hair isnt short short, but its still short (TWA level) i cnt wait till its long enough so i cn rock it, like u said! imma wear it like in the NEWyear, lol. :)
@nylaa21 I agree. I think everyone can go natural...Some just need to wear wigs/weaves in the beginning until they are comfortable with the length of their natural hair.
This video is so good. Really good. You hit the nail on a lot of good points. I like your hair by the way. Short, but feminine. Subscribed. You got some sense and I like that. You're also beautiful!
and honestly (no disrespect to all the ladies who are sharing their journey), but , i think the YT natural hair community is contributing to the "curl popping" mentality. We must also be made to understand that if you dont have curls or curl definition, its ok. Focus on the more important reasons to go or stay natural
LOL its comical that going natural is a big deal and its even more comical that its considered brave to do it. But u r right you need to have confidence to do it otherwise you'll be unhappy period. A.K.A Ladies do you!!
omg i totally agree with the having to have the confidence---within urself to go naturally!!!!!!!!!!! cuz you would really be surprised how many women are scared to embrace their natural hair and how it almost revoltionary even to do so. cuz i can def say i had a few yays on my side but most comments were nays!!! and if u need others approvaland ur not content with you it makes it sooo much harder...but i also think if ur not comfy w/ u in genera...l regardless of hair . yea dnt go natural
I agree with you 98%. You must change your mindset before you go natural or else you will be miserable. The other 2% about it being alot of work is a myth. It's just different. Some ppl make it look easy bc it is lol. Like you said is its just a learning process. If you are someone who doesn't like to do your hair everyday there are style options for you and dreadlocks are a beautiful option too.
Very interesting and I couldn't agree more. It takes all of that to continue this journey. We all have different reasons but in the end we have to be comfortable and happy with it. My first two weeks after the big chop was mixed emotions, I can honestly say now I love my natural hair and I don't care who doesn't. I only wish I would have done it sooner. Love the earrings by the way!!!
it's so sad that going natural has to be such a big deal.i mean why cant women wear there natural hair without it being talked about it's ridiculous but thats just how our society is.
ONCE I KNEW THAT MY RELAXER PRETTY MUCH HAD THE SAME COMPOSITION AS DRANO (as in the shit that unclogs shit in sinks...yeah), THAT WAS IT FROM ME. Beyond the burning, damaged hair, and the whole lack of natural hair care knowledge. DRANO! THAT DID IT FOR ME!!! I did not care what it took. Not on my head, EVER AGAIN!!!! My regrets? Not having done it sooner...
I'm loving those earrings!!! I had to say that first. But I'm completely agreeing with u. I talk to so many people saying that they couldn't do it. And that is fine. They say that bc they don't think they can hold their head up with the kinks. And it is HARD WORK!! It isn't easy by far. U do HAVE to have the back bone. Everything ain't for everybody. As soon as we all figure that out we will stop seeing the girls with the lumpy thighs with the leggings on and so many more unmentionables!!
Took the words outta my mouth. Natural Hair is also not 4 a woman who is OBSESSED with long flowing hair. Some women want to go frm their permed hair to a shoulder length afro, instantly. Also, dont go natural if u cant fathom evr wearing ur hair in an afro (u cant flat iron it or wear braids all the time, its not healthy). I was jus thinkin about this topic the other day im so glad u made this vid
I think we're making it more of a big deal than needed. We've somehow found it easier 2 follow the (now) accepted norm than what grows out of our head. There was a time when natural hair was just simply ..our hair. I just wish we'd just see it for what it is: naturally & authentically OURS. & it's so beautiful, so is the journey to realizing that. Been natural all my life..21 now & I guess I never understood why being "me" was so complicated. I guess I'm still growing up. LoveYouAll
I can completely relate! I'm 25 and I've also been natural all my life and I found myself very intrigued when I realised that it was such a deep journey for many people when it had always been the norm for me. It was difficult when I was younger because I was teased about my 'picky' head and found it difficult to do my hair (didn't half of what I know now back then) but it never stood out to me as such a big deal. But I'm glad so many women are finding joy in embracing their hair.
And you know, I've found that I've stopped explaining and battlin' with people about my decision. I used to list the reasons why I decided to go natural, but you're right, my confidence speaks for itself. Now my reply is, "I just love it!" Thanks for posting this :)
One word Sunshine...PREACH!!!! I had nooo clue that it would be a process and take time and effort...I'm loving it, but I'm seeing the difference...when I had a relaxer, i could slap it in a ponytail, wrap it, etc etc...not so much now....
But in the end...it's sooo worth it!!
Thanks for taking a stand and saying that it's not for everyone....
I totally agree that natural hair is becoming the norm...heck why shouldn't it?
I was in the post office line the other day. There might have been 12 people in the line - 8 of us women. 6 of these women (including me) were natural...possibly 7 of us because one of the ladies was wearing a scarf and hat and it appeared she could have been natural under there. Also, one of the women behind the counter was natural and she was sporting a big ol' afro! LOL
@brownshuga24 It's the 70's again! The 80's too with some of the Jheri Curls I see floating about. We'll be coming up on weaves and extensions again in 5 years. Trust me. It's a cycle. Humans can't help but change and evolve and then repeat the process all over again. Shoot, what do you think happened to those Afro-ed out folks from the late 60's and 70's...they got Jheri Curls, then perms, then extensions, then dreadlocks, then weaves...now back to Fro's. Mark my word.
I can agree with this to an extent. People at my job love my hair and comment on how often I change my hair. They really do come out the wood work in the other direction as well. The women at my job really really like my hair it is almost a little odd. I have not gotten anything negative though I think it depends on who you often find yourself around.
I totally can relate with dealing with people who need an "Amen" with every decision they make. If you're that type of person, natural might not be for you. The confidence that goes with being natural is key as well. I know people who go naturaI, just to say they want to get a Brazilian Keratin Treatment because they don't want to deal with their natural curls. It baffles me.
