  • Patrick Hession is a MAJOR douche though. you don't really see any of his stuff anymore, because nobody like working with him.

  • I saw one of his last concerts :) I also have his autograph...well my bro does

  • Long live the king. RIP MF

Damn can Pat tear in that upper register.

  • What's the second tune played (after don't let the sun go down)???

This really is a great vid.. And all great musicians..really good :)))

  • @rduffy338 Pagliacci

  • @rduffy338 The song that follows "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me' is "PAGLIACCI" (As in "Vesta L Guibba" from I PAGLIACCI! As in NO MORE RICE CRISPIES! I HAVE NO MORE RICE KRISPIES! -- The company actually used the song in the 70's to have a man lament the end of a box of RICE KRISPIES by singing this sing "NO MORE RICE CRISPIES! I HAVE NO MORE RICE KRISPIES!")

  • @foxbodymustangboy89 shaking is a fast lip vibrato :D

  • @nightblader7 Shaking isn't much of a vibrato, but more of a lip trill of some sort...

  • @jewishcat true,it is lip trilling, but its based on the same concept of lip vibrato, and done the same way,at least for me.and thats how arturo sandoval does it too.it might be different in the terms of technique between two diff ppl, but the end result is the same

  • He is completely awesome.

  • 1:00-1:20 holy shit.

  • 4:10- 4:20 is beast

  • @wasabiman17 pretty much.

  • what song at 4:11 and at 4:!5?

  • @wasabiman17 : The Fly ;D then the chameleon ;D

  • and hession can also play classical

  • hey guys dont dog out hession. why do you think MF had him in his band for so many years? he can probably out play most ppl in high notes plus his lower register is still really good. but i still do like eric and wayne better

  • holy shit, maynard was 77 years old there...

  • Yeah, Hession was just a bit harsh - all high stuff and not much else. Not always very musical. Seeing him at the MF tribute next to guys like Eric Miyashiro and Wayne Bergeron sure made him look silly - he was trying too hard, knowing he was outmatched. Still a great player, though - but not in the league of MF. But, of course, no one was or ever will be.

  • Where can I buy this dvd?

  • I agree. Hession was a bad choice. I respect the decision to bring him in. And I respect him as a player but if it were me, iiiii would hire him again after don't let the sun go down on me

  • hession ruined dont let the sun go down on me

  • Thats' a very cool melody. I like it a lot.

  • Pagliacci

  • whats the name of the 2nd song

  • I think Hession is pretty good But then again..

  • maestrazazazazazazazazazazzzzooooooooooo!!!!

  • Yeah!

  • are you kidding? monette mouthpieces are a piece of crap compared to a marcinkiewicz. I've played both....and believe me, monette's wear your chops out fast. its a lot easier to blow through a marcinkiewicz. A marcinkiewicz horn distances itself even further in comparison to a monette....unless your Wynton....I'd rather play an Olds studio trumpet from the 1940's than a monette. WAY more character in the sound. Sadly i can afford neither.

  • you have to play a monette the right way to get the benefits. I played one and the first week it didn't feel that great, but when I got used to playing it my chops felt a ton stronger than ever before.

  • It's funny reading comments.. musicians are either giant a-holes or some of the best people you could ever know.

  • The Tasteebros

  • Bro, I took a free lesson with Donny Dyess last saturday. He's my lesson teacher now. He's a great all-around player, and can really scream! He's helping me with college auditions.

  • Stripes, That's great! I just wrote a recommendation letter for 1 of my students for North Texas State Univ as well as trading e-mails with who I hope will be his private lesson teacher there. Far as I'm concerned, it would be either Berklee in Boston or NTSU. There are other colleges with GREAT jazz programs but they have not yet become synonymous with jazz in all it's forms, yet. It's STILL pretty impressive to say that you went to Berklee or NTSU who's Lab Band won a Grammy couple years ago.

  • monette mouthpiece are the best on the market now....have u even ever played on a monette? ive played on a trumpet, trombone, and tuba monette mouthpiece and its the best mouthpiece ive ever played on.

  • ew pat definitely killed pagliacci IMO. he's just shitty in general so anything MF he does is crap. Eric Miyashiro and Wayne Bergeron at least do good covers.

  • and that's why Patrick Hession sucks so much.

  • @darknipple How does he suck when he got to play with one of the greatest of all times?

  • his tone sucks, his playing sucks, all he can do is squeak high notes extremely loud. that's just a bunch of shit.

  • not saying I disagree or agree, but who are you to say that Maynard's choice <-- in players is wrong?!

  • @staflo10 all im sayin is maynard made a bad decision by picking hession because hession is so full of himself.. so much to where he ruins the music my opinion

  • Yeah, I opened for Maynard a couple times and the first time I opened for Maynard, I went up to Pat after the show and just wanted to tell him how much I enjoyed his lead playing and he was like like "I know"....big douchebag and I've heard better lead players. Faddis was kinda the same way. I've performed with Terell Stafford a handful of times and he is the nicest guy ever. Wynton is surprisingly personable, too. I got to talk with him during intermission for like 20 mins and he was cool.

  • What's the song at 5:14

  • Hey Jude!

  • Haha his notes wernt shaky they were beast haha I bet non of yall here could be better than Maynard

  • what is the song at 2:29

  • The song at 2:29 is Pagliacci

  • Espetacular!!!

  • yeah, he grew up in the 30s, right when that style was becoming popular

  • its called half step bends

  • patrick hession

  • Maynard vibrato is strange..

  • Maynard will be deeply missed. I remember finding out the morning he died and I went into a MAYNARD MARATHON.. Maynard... I love you man!!!

  • yeah man, i remember it well, i was in middle school. our teacher was practically gonna cry. we spent the whole period watching his stuff on the internet

  • I don't care what they say...Maynard still knows how to play the "no more rice crispies" song like no body else!

  • Patrick!!! I love you!!!hahah!!!

  • I met Maynard in '73

He's been my idol ever since.

  • Comment removed

  • Patrick Hession=Bitch

  • Agreed. He needs to go away for a very long time.

  • Maynard sounded like he was dieing he used the lip trill way to much, and patrick does have a really bright tone, so did maynard, maybe because of their horns

  • Not a lip trill, he's pulling out shakes. But sometimes he over-uses. Then again he was getting to the end back then.

Oh, and let's not forget that beast trombone at 0:44!

  • Lip trill, shake same diff, the thing is he used it to much and it doens't sound clean and Reggie watkins is very good, lol I somewhat think he should of played even less or should of practiced more lol for real tho, he was very old here but he is still a musician and has a band and obligations but then again he is the boss lol

  • Agreed, he did over use them...but the fact he COULD do them is showing control. He could probably keep a steady tone easily...just he wanted to shake cause he knew his time was coming fast.

  • that was the problem as maynard got older, almost everything he played was shaken

i wonder if he could play a steady tone...

  • holy cow. if that dudes tone was any brighter, this vid would have blinded me.

I mean, I know lead players tend to sound cutting, but good god man! Not being critical of the player (seriously...I realize he had to pull that stuff off for hours every night). I'm more curious about the equipment, frankly. Even maynard sounded brighter than usual...was it just the sound system?

These questions shall pester me in the days to come...

  • yea Pat H, is just a joke

  • I think its the monettes they are using, they usually sound bright, I prefer a dark tone lol, it wasn't bad its just the minor things like that

  • @flamingdingleberry that's patrick hession for yuh. hahaha he has a bright sound. if you listen to the tribute band with him, bergeron, and Miyashiro you can hear the difference between their town qualities. He definitely has brighter sound.

  • @flamingdingleberry Hession sound like someone choking a cat !!!

  • @flamingdingleberry Lit not your Flaming Dingle Berry bag of twigs and berries burn over this! It's not so much an issue of the playing as the microphone on the camera that makes it so "brassy" and irritating. It wouldn't have sounded like tht in concert to the ear. (I'd know, having been to more than a few hundred concerts , including dozens of Maynard's, and played with his band a few times. Not playing sycophant, but this is a tech issue.

  • @flamingdingleberry FYI - Maynard and the Lead Trumpet were playing Monette Trumpets

  • @flamingdingleberry PAtrick Hession plays Monette horns.

  • Which monette horn is pat using? The MF Prana? And if someone can tell me what mouthpiece he is using for that, i'd appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • I went to see him at the Timberlane HS in NH, and he amazed me. This man shuffled out on stage, picked up the horn, and just blew the crowd away.

  • Graeat

  • bravo patrik hessonn si vede ke ferguson ha fatto un bel lavoro cn luiiiiiiiii braviii

  • Hi sweep, where's sooty?

  • that has got to be a monett trumpet.. the sound is... different.. not something i really like

  • have to agree i dont like the sound of it either

  • How was Maynard in health during this time?

  • I've heard that people close to him said his health was good. I've read quotes like "He'd lost weight, he had given up some 'habits that were bad for him' and was doing well." I had heard of a nagging problem that caused chronic pain in his hand and maybe some stomach trouble, but supposedly he was feeling pretty good for a guy 76 or so years old.

  • who's the trombone player?

  • Reggie Watkins

  • im kinda new to jazz and ive been trying to figure out who the lead trumpet in there is

    the little short dude

  • Patrick Hession

  • the shit...probably one of the best to ever be his lead player... i know and studied under Joey Tartell his lead player right before Pat....its like whoever got to play lead for maynard got free monette from Dave himself.....i wish

  • patrick is one of the greatest trumpet players ever to walk the face of the earth!

  • I disagree....I think he's a great lead player, but his ego really outweighs his talent. I met him after I opened for Maynard's group and Pat Hession is a conceited asshole. I've also met Wynton Marsalis and he at least gave me to time of day and talked with me for like 20+ minutes...

  • I agree with you saxev, He plays well (not well enough in my opinion) but his ego comes out in his playing, I hate it when you hear that in a player. It was like he was trying to outplay MF, I don't care how good or bad MF was playing at this point...you DON'T do that.

  • so he may be a conceited ass hole.sometimes..so was maynard in his hay day. but i know for fact that maynard tells pat to play that high and to take those lines because THATS WHAT PEOPLE COME TO SEE AND HEAR WHEN THEY HEAR "THE MAYNARD FERGUSON BAND" and i know this because Pat Hession is from my Home Town, and Joey Tartell Maynards lead trumept player before Pat, took me to Maynards Rehearsals, and Mayanrds said "Hey Pat, during MacAurthor Park your takin the solo and lead, im gettin old".

  • and pat has one lung....but if maynard told me to outplay him then I would try my damnest...thats an honor to have one of the greatest ask you to TRY and out play him.... please...maynard kept him for 4 years until he died....his main thing was having his MF band known for recruiting the best young talent out there...mayanrd was already a legend on his own. period....come on dude. its Maynrd ferguson...u really think he would LET someone out play him, knowingly at his age he cant do it...c'mon

  • Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying he's not a quality lead player, but his ego seriously outweighs his talent. There's no good time to be arrogant, but at least have as much talent as you do ego.

  • PATRICK YOURE A MONSTER!!!!!!!Absolutely Sensational!

  • Let me make that a little better looking lol.

Sounds like Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."

And, yes, it is that song.

  • Does anyone know what the first song was called with that trombone solo?

  • sounds like elton johns dont let the sun go down on me

  • hey does anyone know wat that second tune is called?

  • firethunder33: Pagliacci

  • Pagliacci is correct. I had this album

  • Yeah, Pat must be total crap .... that's why he played lead for Maynard for what, 6 years? Lol, the man isn't the definition of bad. Of course he can scream but his site has him playing some classical stuff, he sounds pretty solid on it.

  • Is that Jamie Hovorka in the trumpet section too? That guy is a hoss too!

  • wow hightrumpet pls sdfu. also if u guys wana learn something new about trumpet check out my vids :)

  • Learn how to choose your words, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one.

  • I would like to see you play that same solo at Maynards age and health...this was mere months before he passed away. I had the honor of seeing him 6 months before he died, and he still put one one of the best shows I have ever experienced. Still inspiring our young musicians to play!! Pathetic? You are so wrong my friend....Maynard was never pathetic. He was, simply, Maynard Ferguson.

  • He was in his 70's

    The man is a legend.

  • so i have listened and watched just about all the videos of patrick hession that i could find and i have tried to find things that i like about him that would warrent him being one of the "greats" in my book. and i dont see anything really special about him other than the fact that he can scream. to me thats all he can do. and even that doesnt really sound that good. litsen to his pitch and when he plays. it all over the place. i am being negative....sorry but this is my opinion..

  • I must concur, Mr. Pierson. Not exactly Chuck Findley or Snooky Young.

  • Video proves that Patrick also has a great lower register, which is what people constantly doubt. He's a great all around player.

  • that echo at 1:19 is sick!

  • that was great!! what are the notes to the trumpet solos at the end ?

  • if you're talking about hey jude, it is in the key of G (F on Bb trumpet)

  • lol oops I meant that it is in Eb concert

  • shit, now that I think about it, it's in Bb, the arpeggio starts on Eb.

  • ok...so maybe it IS in Eb ...omg lol

  • it starts on a Bb trumpets F...F-A-C-GFG-F are the notes

  • esas rolas si que estan con vergas yea arriba el rouler fergunson,.-.,

  • Trombone solo was kinda weak. Loved it when played by Randy Purcell

  • why would MF want another screamer on the band? anyways old maynards tone sounds like its crying all the time from all his lip slurs

  • Every band needs a lead trumpet player. And come on, you gotta give some more respect to Maynard man...

  • Maynard had Lynn in his band, Lynn was a screamer too. :D Plus, Maynard is older, he's not nearly as good as he used to be, but he's still a legend. Amazing.

  • for a second it sounded like the one from Live At Ronnies or is it?

  • nvm its not thanks for putting this video up though

  • R.I.P.

  • Maynard Ferguson... Lips Of Steel

  • Holy shit at the echo at 1:19. Listen for it, that thing is looong.

  • Awesome. Amazing trombone and trumpet! How does he hit those notes. Its absolutely crazy. I mean c'mon, who r u trying to kid!?!

  • Actually...they are all lead players. Each song or so they rotate, hence why it's so easy for the band to maintain a constant high range that sounds solid through a whole concert.

  • Actually pat hession plays lead mostly...they may switch for like a song but he plays lead most of the time.

  • Pat was the lead trumpet... he played all of the lead charts, there was no rotating. The only time the other guys would have high notes was if it was unison or if Pat was out front playing one of the solos.

  • Wrong!!!!!!! The only time I didn't play lead is when I was playing a Maynard part. Thanks for playing... Next!!!!!!!

  • Pat Hession is that you?! You are awesome! I have your book! Keep playing high!

  • you guys are retartedly funny!!!!!!

  • Ownage.

  • whos the lead trumpet player here?

  • Thanks so much for posting this dude! I've heard it so many times and it still makes me tear lol. RIP Maynard.

  • Reggie Watkins is awesome! I'm lucky enough to be able to say that I've played in the same band as that guy!

  • Between Gonna Fly Now (Rocky) and Chameleon is Eli's Coming

  • 1. dont let the sun go down on me

    2. Pagliacci

    3. gonna fly now

    4. the fly

    5.chameleon

    6. hey jude

.. there used to be a little something from give it one..

  • This clip isn't the whole hit medley, just the second half of it.

  • the 2nd one is pagliacci

  • To McDutchy

    2nd: ?? Sorry

3rd: I Pagliacci from Ruggiero Leoncavallo

  • 1st: Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me(Elton John)

    2nd: ??

    3rd: ??

    4th: Gonna Fly now

    5th: The Fly

    6th: Chameleon

    7th: Hey Jude

  • what songs does he play in the beginning?

  • Maynard is a god!

  • I heard that!

  • yup he can scream (lead)...Maynard I met several times. I will miss him a great deal. thanks guys.

  • I once saw him play in Sinyon Tx.1976.

  • it's Patrick Hession

Maynard Ferguson was absolutely one of the best screeming trumpeters of the world!!

  • who's the trumpet plyr that played out of place in pagliaci?

  • I went to this concert on tour. Awesome group! Ya Maynard was old, but he still screamed a couple of Double C's, and the lead guy screamed a couple of Double D's and E's

  • lead guy is pat hession (my private teacher)

  • Every musician is world class. where do they get those chops. The best of the best in brass turns to gold.

  • no, i just dont like Jazz, and especcially jezz trombone -.- and that highblowing could have been done much and much better.

  • If you don't like jazz then why the hell are you posting?

  • cuz there's a trombone in it -.-

excuse me for being a lazy dutch mofo

  • there is absolutely nobody in the world who could have done the screaming better than maynard and his trumpet section. those are the best in the world.

  • You guys are idiots. Hession and Watkins (as well as Helbing) are absolute monster players and really were the the meat of the Big Bop Nouveau in the last 5 years of Maynards wonderful life. Have some respect and don't be so fast to criticize. They are some of the biggest, fastest rising names on the scene today, so only if you are Maynard himself, do you have the room to critique, eventhough, Maynard would never criticize his fellow players. So, ...Grow up.

  • nah, i dont like the trombone in teh beginning, i could do better with 2 weeks of practice

  • Did you hear the original version

  • i like the trombone solo a bit, but the highblowing in the trumpet is a bit above his level, you dont even hear his last note, but still quiet a challenge tho, pretty amazing and the solo of the trumpet is nice too

  • I think he was a bit tired! But his level higher than this ;)

  • you obviously have no Idea who that trumpet player playing that don't let the sun go down on me solo is or you wouldn't be saying that. Patrick Hession is easily one of the best trumpet players in the world, and definitely tops in the lead trumpet and high note category. He played that solo perfectly. what note are you saying is above his level????

  • i wanted to argue bout that with you but never mind. Dont put my effort in it. Btw the dude in the white suit. its horrible. Then someone replies, thats one of the famous blablabla. So if he is famous he is good. Wow good one

  • I'm not sure what you are trying to say there but whatever

  • How did you do the audio on this? It doest seem like any video would get such a great audio output such as this.

  • Simply enjoy this Hit Medley!! RIP Maynard
