no offence but i thought avatar was actually boring. i'm not gonna cry about it beating Titanic because there's a 10-year difference between the two releases...well money value changes over time and it tends to increase...which means if you convert the amount that avatar received to the 1997standard...i don't even think it's worth any hype. but i might be wrong. however, one thing for me is a fact. So what is avatar beat titanic....Titanic is based off a true story not some BS imaginative story. Though avatar was a great movie i would say titanic is by far a much better movie.
If Avatar hadn't been in 3D, I would not have sat through it in theaters. I would've waited for it to come out on dvd. It's good but not groundbreaking in my opinion, every aspect of that movie has been in something else. But then again everything has kind of been done, its hard to have a completely original concept. I'm just glad Gone With the Wind is still considered as the highest grossing film if you count inflation.

Why is TITANIC the best? I have seen it like a thousand times and I never get bored of it, the only time I watched Avatar, I was sleeping/bored during the second half of the movie. I think I liked Avatar better in the end. To me it wouldn't be too hard to make a movie about an event that already happened, but to make a whole new world of your own... is difficult. I'm a huge fan of both movies but I prefer creativity over retelling a historic event.

"Avatar" is probably the most gorgeous, and visually arresting piece of spectacle of all time. It doesn't have the emotional resonance of "Titanic", but it's just as gorgeous, and it has a more engaging story with it's world building! :)

@IwillKillYourCereal You can have an original plot, but you need the right presentation. Many directors have failed to do that. Cameron's goal was to make an epic movie. Epic movies usually have a mainstream plot that everyone can connect to eg. Titanic, Gladiator. And that is why it's hard to come up with an original plot. However, Cameron beautifully presented it and made an epic film. You can say whatever you want about the story, but it had a solid, believable, and entertaining script.
The only reason Avatar passed Titanic is because movie tickets are way more than it was back then. You can pay 18 dollars to see avatar in iMax 3D for like 18 dollars, and titanic people were paying 8 dollars back than. Avatar may have made more, but titanic had a lot more viewers. Either way James Cameron is brilliant, and both are awesome movies!
You know what's interesting? If inflation didn't exist, and every movie's admition ticket cost the same for the past 100 years, then the movie "Gone With the Wind" would still be the highest grossing movie of all time

@dwnlg565 Wrong all over the world the average is 8-11.00 not that much as you think. Avatar made that much becuase from ages 90 to 5 finally had interest to go see a sci-fi romance. You need to do your homework. Very few theaters charged more than 10-13.00 for Avatar. Now the prestigious ones in NY and Cali TX those were 15-19.00.. No lying necessary. Nothing will beat Titanic in terms of cultural impact though. I agree. Avatar is still the greatest movie experience ever.Was more than a movie

Why is TITANIC the best? I have seen it like a thousand times and I never get bored of it, the only time I watched Avatar, I was sleeping/bored during the second half of the movie. Yes special effects were awesome, that I must admit, but come on the story was not that good. Avatar is at the top in the box office? Well duh, 3d tickets cost like $20.

Unlike Avatar, Titanic's the kind of movie that would inspire other young lovers and make them cry, because the whole plot and scene is emotional, and represent the eternal bliss of true romance and love. Avatar can NEVER take Titanic's place, cause it doesn't provide the kind of "hopeless" romance that we audience want!!!!! And besides, Titanic was dated back to when the boat sank, which I think is WAY more interesting than some planet where you have weird avatars.

For starters, the people who said special effects don't make a good movie obviously did not even notice the special effects.
Yes, it did have the same plot as Pocahontas, but that movie is based on real events, and not that many people seem to realize that.

Titanic deserves the hype, I don't see the big deal with Avatar. I don't care if it has the best effects and whatnot,I think it is unoriginal,and not touching at all. Isn't the best part of a film the way in which it impacts you?? Avatar didn't do much for me.

I liked avatar as a movie but nothing can ever beat Titanic, people still watch titanic, people still love Titanic but I doubt that in 10 years Avatar will still be loved this much. It was a good movie but sometimes visual effects just can't make up for a poor story plot.

You can't really compare the two...Titanic is a romance, drama while avatar is a sci-fi adventure....theyre both good and each has elements that make both of them good...and for all of the 3D haters, Titanic is being re-released in 3D in 2012...

I think I liked Avatar better in the end. To me it wouldn't be too hard to make a movie about an event that already happened, but to make a whole new world of your own... is difficult. I'm a huge fan of both movies but I prefer creativity over retelling a historic event.

OK BOTH MOVIES WERE GREAT. BUT I THINK TITANIC HAS THAT SORT OF FEELING YOU GET THAT doesn't come that often. that is so rare, you see in movies. not, woe or anything. It's just an emotion you get, that cannot be described. You get that feeling when you watch the Titanic, movie. Not with avatar. Don't get me wrong,both movies were fantastic. But it's just with titanic, that you can't explain what greatness you're facing. And that's the great thing. And that feeling let me say... is the best. :)

you see...the reason why Avatar surpasses titanic for most grossing film of all time because the 3D Imax are insanely expensive...freaking $17 compared to $5.00 back then...Also people watched avatar is because of the 3D...but to say which film is better i would have to say Titanic...Avatar is just basically about Pocahontas in space...

@ryn7yen2 No, the reason why Avatar surpassed titanic record is because it's a brilliant movie and the word of mouth is fabulous. There have been other Imax and 3D movies, but why didn't they break the record? Avatar not only surpassed titanic's record, but killed it. 2.8 billion fu*king dollars!

@chukkkles.. Amen Chuckles.. Titanic is my 2nd most special movie... Avatar for the film experienece splendor and new awakening of the senses is my number one film of all time. It has surpassed everything I thought an epic could be.. Still rate Titanic, Ten Commandments, Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, SWs Empire Strikes back and LOTR films very high though..Still Indeed Chukkkles... Avatar is truly the greatest movies experience of all time.
THe Imax 3D or 3D versions of the film especially. :)

"Avatar" is probably the most gorgeous, and visually arresting piece of spectacle of all time. It doesn't have the emotional resonance of "Titanic", but it's just as gorgeous, and it has a more engaging story with it's world building! :)

Other than that Titanic no doubt beats the crap out of this. Quality > Quantity.

Hes definitely tied with Speilberg when it comes to make the greatest epics of modern cinema. Nothing can compete with Avatar. First movie to take you out of the theater and into a new world of experiences. James Cameron is a film god!

@IwillKillYourCereal You can have an original plot, but you need the right presentation. Many directors have failed to do that. Cameron's goal was to make an epic movie. Epic movies usually have a mainstream plot that everyone can connect to eg. Titanic, Gladiator. And that is why it's hard to come up with an original plot. However, Cameron beautifully presented it and made an epic film. You can say whatever you want about the story, but it had a solid, believable, and entertaining script.

The only reason Avatar passed Titanic is because movie tickets are way more than it was back then. You can pay 18 dollars to see avatar in iMax 3D for like 18 dollars, and titanic people were paying 8 dollars back than. Avatar may have made more, but titanic had a lot more viewers. Either way James Cameron is brilliant, and both are awesome movies!

@dwnlg565 Wrong all over the world the average is 8-11.00 not that much as you think. Avatar made that much becuase from ages 90 to 5 finally had interest to go see a sci-fi romance. You need to do your homework. Very few theaters charged more than 10-13.00 for Avatar. Now the prestigious ones in NY and Cali TX those were 15-19.00.. No lying necessary. Nothing will beat Titanic in terms of cultural impact though. I agree. Avatar is still the greatest movie experience ever.Was more than a movie
