  • Wonderful tutorial!!!

  • I tried to do this on my own. All I had is a completed pillowcase that someone made for me - so no pattern but end result. 5 hours later I was frustrated! This tutorial was awesome and I can't believe how quickly it was done. Thanks from CA!

  • @vonstermommy YAY! Glad you found success!! Hope you have many more fun pillow case making days!! :)

  • this is lovely! how do you secure the pillowcase closed though?

  • This was a great video. Thank you for sharing!

  • I have made eight of these for grandchildren. What measurements woulld you use for a king size pillowcase?

  • @erg1492 A king size pillow case is Approx 21" x 40"

  • Is there a standard rule for Queen size, King size and travel pillow??

  • @34the3dogs I am not sure! I can check it out! I'll let you know if I find anything out!

  • Are there written instructions for the pillow case??

  • @34the3dogs Yes there sure are. Call the shop and we can email them to you!! 888 571 1122

  • This was a very well explained video - the person who did the recording did a great job, and the teaching was fabulous! :-)

  • @Inhisgrace01 Thanks so much! Glad you like it!

  • I feel SO stupid asking this, but I am a complete NEWBIE to sewing...does it matter what the WIDTH of your material is to make these? Guess what I need to know is, when you roll it off the bolt, with the fold at bottom and measure out your 27", ...how wide across is the salvage end (which coming off the bolt is folded in half) Am I making any sense? HELP??!!!

  • @JoPuttPutt Usually fabric comes in a standard width of 44-45 inches. So don't worry about the width.

  • I just made two pillow cases using this method! It is great and the pillows look awesome! Thank you!!

  • this was super easy and im a 19 year old guy. my girlfriend is gonna be impressed. thanks for the great instructions :)

  • @PrideRock92 Awesome!! We love guy quilters!! I am sure you will totally impress your girlfriend!! Way to go! {sew} Have a great week!!

  • girl you are AWESOME!!!!! Thanks for all your help!!

  • @skaterchik216199 Thanks!! I'll tell Mom you said that!! :)

  • what size of main fabric do you need for a king size pillow case ??

  • @judy7ful To find out this measurement I would measure your pillow, but generally about 40 inches

  • @jennydoan57

thanks a lot; it's a gift (of course) so I'll just use 40" and hope!

  • What a simple way to do it!! Looks great too!!

  • I am assuming that you are using 44" fabric? Can you give the final size after cutting off the selvage, just in case I use fabric that is not 44"?

  • Loved this video...until I attempted to make it. Not sure how the other people had good results with these instructions because it has you put the pillowcase fabric right side up which is wrong. This is how it should be according to other sites and a successful pillowcase for me: Cuff fabric right side up, trim fabric next and pillowcase case fabric right side down. Maybe there are other ways to do it, however, my experience with all fabrics face up was unsuccessfu.

  • @mfqz31 It really does work! Keep trying! Good luck as well. If you are still struggling with it give us a call at the shop and we can walk you through it. 888 571 1122

  • Thanks!

  • Thank you!! I bought a kit with instructions from a local shop and could not get it. Your tutorial helped me out! I made Dr. Suess pillowcases for my kids for Christmas.

  • Hi Jenny, I don't have a surger. Do you need to surge the side seam, or can you use a regular stitch? Thanks!

  • @gun1024 A regular sewing machine seam is fine! At least 1/4 of an inch!! Hope this helps!

  • Great tutorial. I will start tomorrow making some for Christmas presents. One thing, when you sew the side seam the video does not say if it is also a 1/4 or larger seam. Thanks again, I love out tutorials.

  • @Maryalice65 I almost always use a 1/4 of an inch seam on everything, but since it's a pillow case, it won't really matter! Good luck and enjoy!

  • fantastic - thank you

  • I made a pillow tonight and it came out great.....!

  • I would also like to add that handmade gifts through charity are a wonderful idea. When in hospital my children have received handmade (knitted) dolls which have warmed my soul during challenging times. I have also seen young (unpartnered) Mums comforted my the gifts of blankets for their newborns, during what can be a lonely time. The thought that someone cared enough to make it is truely a blessing.

  • Thankyou! As a beginner I find many you tube demos made by other beginners who are friendly, and many more novices who seem to talk down to the viewer. (I don't believe they do it on purpose.)

Your demo is clear, easy to follow and friendly, showing the skill and ease of someone who knows their stuff. A finished pillow slip in the beginning would help, as would some written definitions of terms used. These would work well as "gift wrap" for a gift. (Or charity gift at Christmas.)

  • @FrugalMummy Thanks for your comments! We sure appreciate the feedback! Much luck to you in your sewing adventures!!

  • I just now saw your video........but i am a bit confused......

i understand that you put the cuff fabric face up......

but then you put the pillow case part face up too? shouldn't it be placed face down?

then put the trim over that , both on raw edges.

  • @1knsflower Just give it a try! You'll be amazed at the results! It sounds crazy, i know. Good luck and have a great day!

  • Thank you! I just made two matching pillowcases and preparing to make 3 more sets.

  • Thanks for the tutorial MSQC. I actually made a patchwork pillowcase and it turned out beautifully. I was a bit harder and took a little longer but, the end result was well worth the labor.

    Thanks again :-)

  • Thank you very much for the tutorial. It worked like a charm!

  • I'm just learning to sew and finding things I can sew easily and without a lot of sewing experience is absolutely fantastic. It makes learning to sew that much more fun when I can see a finished product that I made myself. Thanks for the video and keep it coming.

  • love this tutorial, thank you.

  • Hello Jenny, thank you so much for making this tutorial it is very helpful, both pillow cases are very beautiful, you have explained perfectly clear and I am sure that I will not have any problem making my niece's, but she uses a king size pilow, can you tell me how many inches I must have to cut of every fabric?, hugs from Mexico City

  • Thank you so much... I just got my fabric and now, because of your tutorial, I am ready to begin out here in Az where it is 112 degrees.

  • Thank you so much! What a great informative, fun & very understandable tutorial. Keep up the great tutorials online, very appreciative!!!!!!!!!!! : )

  • I posted a week ago to see if anyone knew the dimensions for a travel pillow and I kept searching. I found the dimensions and made my travel pillow last night and it turned out PERFECT!!

For travel pillow: ½ yard main fabric ¼ yard cuff 1/8 yard accent

    Directions: Cut

    1. main fabric: 17” x 25”

    2. cuff fabric: 8” x 25”

    3. accent fabric: 3” x 25”

My only suggestion is that these dimensions are snug and next time I will do 26" instead :)

Hope this helps anyone else who was wondering :)

  • @LDubsMD Awesome!!!Thank you so much!!

  • wow! i love it!!! :)

  • I see that others have asked but i don't see an answer... can you post the fabric sizes we'd need to make a 12x16 travel pillow case? I guess it just needs to be a bit bigger than the actual pillow? Thank you in advance!! :)

  • @LDubsMD I haven't figured that out, but you are right it should be just a bit bigger than the pillow size.

  • I'm learning how to sew and this seems like a good project to start with, can't wait to give it a try. Thank you for making the video, it's great!

  • I use this technique when making my pillowcase dresses. Makes for very clean seams!

  • Adorable and Sweet, thankyou!

  • I guess you could do two little two inch strips and have two when finished.....I might try that.

  • I have a 12 x 16 pillow for my toddler. I'd like to make a pillowcase for her, but am unsure of the measurements. I think I will need a 13" x 17" of fabric, 5 1/2" x 13" piece for the border and 1" for trim. Does this sound about right?

  • @jlh75777 I just posted the dimensions I used last night and my 12x16 turned out PERFECT! Here is what I found online

For travel pillow: ½ yard main fabric ¼ yard cuff 1/8 yard accent

    Directions: Cut

    1. main fabric: 17” x 25”

    2. cuff fabric: 8” x 25”

    3. accent fabric: 3” x 25”

The only thing I will change when I make my next one is to increase to 26inches because 25 is perfectly snug. If that's what you prefer, stick with 25 inches.

Good luck and hope this helps :)

  • so..that material is 150 cm long right - folded in two as you are cutting right?

  • so question as my math is slow : I need to do a 70/70 cm pillow xase with these 3 materials - how do I cut the two main pieces? thanks

  • @Elementfifth You will leave the cuff and trim size the same and just cut the body of your pillow the size you need.

  • thanks a lot-just did one but from scraps as i did not have a lot of material and its gooorgeous thanks

  • done 3 today the classic way - tomorrow I will do this one thanks a loot

  • Thank-you for the tutorial. I bought a kit like this at the local fabric store and couldn't understand the written instructions that came with it until I watched your video!

What is the Million Pillowcase Challenge????

  • Jenny, did you use WOF for the main fabric?

  • @lydiapaula Yes i did! Have fun!

  • I did it! It worked! I am so excited. I think I will make a dress for my grandchildren like this.l just leaving the top open and adding straps. (reshaping the top a bit). Oh, I am so excited! How can I attach a photo? oh this is exciting!

  • @Annagm1 That is such a great idea send the photos to our site! We would love to see them.

  • I don't wash my fabric unless it is cheap fabric. The shrinkage in the good fabric is minimal.

  • Thanks for the tutorial! Do you need to wash the fabric BEFORE pinning & sewing? If so, how much do you have to allow for shrinkage?

    good luck!

  • Love,Love,Love it thanks!!

  • I noticed you used the fabric right off of the bolt. Does this mean it is not necessary to prewash the fabric?

  • @yarnsalot If you use good quality quilting fabric you really don't need to pre-wash.

  • @yarnsalot If you use good quality quilting fabric you really don't need to pre-wash.

  • Wonderful

  • Quilts of Valor needs pillowcases too! Great tutorial.

  • This is how we made our pillow cases in my sewing class at school. It was kind of annoying but i guess it's a cool idea

  • Love this tutorial! I was wondering if you could tell me what dimensions a travel size pillow case would have? Travel pillow size I have is 12x16.

i was wondering if you can make a tutorial on how to make a bedskirt?!

i havent been able to find one on youtube yet!

  • Nice video idea for such a pillow case! Love it and adding to a fave. Used to live in the Show Me State myself until August of last year. I do miss it. I came across your video here while looking for a tutorial on how to make one of those Tube/Sausage pillows. Would you have any easy tuts on how to make one of these? With or w/o a zipper on the end. If you can get one up, I'd sure appreciate it.

  • Jenny,

Please keep up the GREAT work and tutorials! These are fantastic for a new sewer/quilter like myself!!

  • Dear Jenny, and everyone at MSQC....thanks SO much for this tutorial. I have made SO many....but I need to refer back to your tute every once in awhile. Im getting older and my memory isnt what it used to be. I need to come back and be reminded of how to place the fabric and the piece sizes and such. Thanks so much for all your tutorials. I really enjoy them!

  • Hi Jenny and everyone at MSCC..... If you would like to give a tutorial on how to make a pillowwraps pillowcase, be my guest.

  • I think I've seen this tutorial before, but came back to it after seeing the tube quilting tutorial. I love not only how fast this goes together, but the encased seams; how efficient! Thanks so much

  • Hi Jenny, I loved this pillow case so much it is so easy!!! I could also see how you could make a top sheet for a babies cot to match as well

    thank you! thank you!!!

  • OOPS MCQC......... :)

  • Hi Jenny and everyone at MSCC..... I followed your tutorial and made a gorgeous pillow case (my first attempt). A very creative and ingenious way to make a pillow case; thanks for sharing. I did make french seams and I'm thrilled with the finished case..... aloha Makaiki

  • @makaiki1 Glad it worked!! And mahalo for the note and the aloha! I'll take as much aloha as I can get in this missouri cold :)

  • You can also finish the seams with a french seam...sew wrong sides together 1/4 inch turn wrong side out and sew seams again a little more than 1/4 inch voila!!! french seams.

  • The best sewing video! I have made lots of these to match my grandchildrens bedroom colours. thanks so much!!

  • I made this pillowcase tonight, it was so easy and really turned out nice! Thanks for uploading this

  • This is the first time I've been to your site...I've watched Quilt as you go and the tube pillowcase. Jenny..you're a great teacher. The tutorials are easy to follow and understand...THANK YOU!!!

  • those pillowcases are so cute.. im going to make a lot of them for my mother in law and my mom ..they are going to ♥ it..

great video and also is very understandable thanks

  • where did I go wrong? other than being a beginner! why does your fabric look longer than 27" when you spread it out? again I am a beginner!

  • Finally something I can understand instead of trying to figure out someones written instructions!

    I love it!

  • I used this tutorial to make Christmas pillowcases for me and my boyfriend and they turned out soooo cute! I've gotten tons of compliments on them. =) Thank you for posting the tutorial!

  • That is so smart, I wish I saw this last Christmas when I made a pillowcase for my little grandson.

  • this is the best sewing video i've seen. i'm not sure why others are unable to make sewing videos this clear and understandable. thank you so much!! please make more!

  • Thank you! Best yet!

  • I would love to do this again however your tutorial as helpful as it is doesn't work or at least not for me every single one of your tutorials plays for about 4 or 5 words and stops and then starts the little circle going round and round then starts for a few more words and stops it has been this way everytime I attempt to watch any of your tutorials, but it is very frustrating to watch and attempt to get it done. I especially wanted to watch the ornament making tutorial.

  • @54meowmeow Works fine for me. Sounds like you have a bandwidth issue.

  • I got instructions for this from a quilt shop, but I love having a visual--someone actually doing this in front of me! THANK YOU!!

Totally awesome that there's no raw edges on the inside by the cuffs. VERY cool!

  • Wow - what a cool trick to make pillowcases! I'm so impressed with how quick you cut the fabric. Quick question for the novice - what length are your bolts (or is that standard?).

  • @whyasticot

Isn't that great! The standard width of fabric is about 40 inches. There are longer and shorter bolts but 40 to 42 is the standard in the business.

  • @jennydoan57 - thank you for your reply - that makes sense. I'm excited to start this Million Pillowcase Challenge with my daughter. Wish we discovered it 11 months ago, but lets see what we can do in one month!

  • I've always wanted to make a CUTE pillow case (not just folded over material) --- thank you so much for a step-by-step video! By the way - cute fabric on both cases!

  • I'm teaching a child to sew, and this will make a great project ! Thanks for the step-by-step instructions.

  • I just love that. I can' t wait to try it.

  • great way to make a pillow case, ive often wondered how to make my own. but what about if you want the pillow case to match the quilt that you made and also have the pillow case have the same quilting pattern????? help..evie

  • Amazing, I love it ! thanks

  • Thank you for the tutorial for a pillow case. I just finished my first Christmas quilt (84x107). I used the same materials and made 4 pillow cases.

  • Thank you so very much. I had purchased the Pillowcase Fabric and Instruction kit from the Houston Quilt Show and found the directions too cumbersome. Your video saved me so much frustration.

  • Hi Jenny,

can I use flannel for these? I want to make them to match some rag quilts I am makingfor gandkids. Thanks!

  • Eres la mejor !!!!, un saludo desde Venezuela y contigo aprendere bastante y de forma correcta a coser....besos

  • Hi! I am new to sewing and my aunt bought me a machine 4yrs ago to help me to learn. I'm only now learning how to use it. :) I have a question @ cutting the fabric. I am making silk pillowcases and practiced on some remnants watching your vid. I cut the fabric wrong and it didn't come out right. Do you have a video about cutting fabric? I have 2 yds of the fabric I want for the cases, but I have no idea how to cut it for proper dimensions. Any help you can supply would be GREATLY appreciated!

  • Nice job, ladies!

This pillowcase can be sewn with ALL french seams, which is really nice. After turning the sausage out, sew the pillowcase wrong sides TOGETHER along the bottom and side with a 1/4" seam, then turn and sew wrong sides OUTSIDE along the bottom and side with a 3/8" seam. Turn right side out and press! All hidden seams now.

  • So easy to follow. I'll be making some. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • I just love this. I have never sewn a thing and just started a quilting class last week. I have six grandkids and I will be making these for them to match rag quilts that I want to make in order to sharpen my sewing skills for intricate quilts! One pillow case for each holiday is what I was thinking including their birthdays!

  • This tutorial is AWESOME! I can't wait to make holiday pillowcases for me and my boyfriend from this lovely Christmas fabric I was drooling over at the craft store the other day. =) Thanks for sharing!!

  • Love this. I made new Halloween pillow cases for my kids and nephew. This video makes it very easy to understand how to lay everything all out.

  • I am so impressed! I am going to try it, and i really appreciate the clarity of the tutorial!

  • ive donated over 10 to different places some in need people i knew and some to the womens shelter.
