This match is definately the pinnacle of Jerry Flynn's entire career. His one and only shot at a world title, granted it was an obvious bad booking job.
I always thought that it was very sad that Jerry Flynn took his own life by overdosing on prescription back medication and subsequently choking to death on his own vomit. I hope that youre wrestling with the angels right now Jerry, and that the crippling pain of the never ending Hell that you called life is behind you :(
Also, I think Jerry Flynn is one of the most underrated pro wrestlers. He was always entertaining and technically sound, he was just forced into a life of jobbertude. Unfortunate, I always created him on games cause I always thought he was awesome.
You know... this match was AFTER Goldberg ended his career. (supposably) this was the week after his final match with Goldberg, he then wrestled Lash Larue on Thursday Thunder. I am not sure if Goldberg did end his career being that this match took place AFTER that PPV. he called out the night of the WCW Sold Out PPV
he's wrestling with a concussion. SInce wrestlers have and ignore it attitude, he kept on going. Look at Benoit. If Bret didnt seek professional help before the PPV, he'd have continued and god knows what wud have happened.
Russo did do the one thing that wasn't happening while Bischoff was in charge, and that was to push the midcarders and the other talent. It's just that Russo sucked at it.
Frequent title changes, false finishes... no clear reasons for ay of it. That's Russo for you.
Jerry Flynn was low-midcard his whole career to this point and then suddenly a shot at the title versus Bret Hart?
And Jerry looked like he was thrown on at the last minute - he didn't get time to change into his ring gear.
who remembers Jerry Flynn? It's not about pushing midcarders. it's about elevating them. Jerry Flynn wrestling Bret meant nothing, since Flynn was perceved as a nobody by the fans. Russo still does that now. Look at how weak AJ Styles is booked as the world champion.
Which is exactly why Russo's booking was terrible. Bret Hart did not need to be put over by Jerry Flynn, and Flynn got nothing out of the match. Who really wanted to see a WCW champion beating a low-mid carder/glorified jobber? No one. As you said, Jerry Flynn was a nobody. And stayed that way.
It was just bad writing. It was a quick filler that transitions into an NWO spot on the mics, that really didn't do anything.
I never saw anything from Bret's WCW title reign except his matches with Goldberg.....so this is at least interesting from a historic perspective.....but Jerry Flynn?
Think about this: one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot in a ring needed help to beat Jerry F'n Flynn. How does that help Bret Hart's credibility if he can't cleanly beat a jobber? Granted, Flynn can probably beat up a lot of people in real life but in WCW he was a job guy. Bad, bad booking.
This would turn out to be one of Bret's last matches as he was suffering the effects of Goldberg's concussion inducing standing side kick.I believe his last match would be the week after this against Kevin Nash.
Is this the match that took place shortly after Goldberg superkicked him in the face. The one where Flynn kicked Bret "full out" and Bret wrote an article about it in the Calgary Sun?
i always wondered if bret was so hurt after starcade why did he wrestle matches after cause this is after that and a hardcore match vs terry funk, he wrestled the very next nite after, im sure he could have had some impact even if not in the ring
Anybody else have no idea who Jerry Flynn was until clicking on this video?

Bret tried to pass the torch in WCW but because of guys like Hogan it never happened.

Way to push the champ !! Design the finish where he needs aid beating a bottom midcarder.

Bret wrote in his book that it was hell working with Flynn and he was getting stiffed by him the whole match

He suffered the injury at Starrcade 1999, but continued wrestling for a few weeks afterward.

If Jerry Flynn actually beat Hitman, it would be the greatest upset in wrestling history... too bad he didn't win.
