It is easier to polish the guitar with the strings off(i.e. when you change the strings). Oh, and by the way, clean the body first with some lemon oil and a polish cloth. My 2 cents.

If the scratches are minor indeed, you could use a bodygloss such as carnauba wax. It hides and seals surface scratches and is rather inexpensive.

You can use any kind of wood polish e.g. funiture polish
