  • Gotta have something for the end of the year. even if its a 1 min video....

  • @Rockchisler I'm just dealing with life, I'll be back soon, thanks!

  • @Emmaluurvechick From what I was told, it was a very dark, but historic time. The J5 had waaaay better songs after the one on this video IMO. Thanks!

  • U M.I.A. Where are you?

  • @Rockchisler LOL I'm still here, just taking a longer break than normal. I'll be back soon, thanks for checking up on a brother!

  • @thruthealcove

That's the same way I feel about this dozen or so amount of Jet issues from between 1988 and 1991 which my mother came across when she was cleaning out her drawers in her bedroom (now my sister's room). They were tucked away in those drawers for about 15 years (give or take) and she gave them to me and I still have them now, but I didn't keep one of them due to the first and last few pages being torn off.

PS Damn I never knew Jets used to be that small! Wow..

  • @TaurusWrangler Yes, be sure to keep those too!

  • @thruthealcove

Yep. I also used to have the March 25, 1976 issue, which my grandparents used to own, but I don't know what the hell happened to it; somehow it disappeared @ one point. However, I plan on buying another copy off of Ebay ASAP.

P.S. Do you plan on showcasing more issues of Jet in the future? I'd love to see what you have!

  • @TaurusWrangler @TaurusWrangler That's the only one I have, but here's a link for you to copy & paste, check your messages!

  • greetings Mr Kevin how are you sir? Its been a while since I commented, and may I kindly know the intro song of this vid? If not, I respect that ;)

Sir thanks for your time, and may God richly bless you and your family as well ^_^

  • @arabianongpinoy Hey there, good to hear from you after all this time!!! I never knew anything about that song, I just loved it.

  • @thruthealcove

OH hahahaha what a disappointment! Sorry to be negative and offensive, but I really love the song as well! How are things up in NY? :D

  • more videos please :D

  • @dabaddestbob Soon!

  • @thruthealcove feww

  • Thanks for the memories...had all those sounds. I remember all that history, I was 13 back then. Also Grazin' in the Grass (Hugh Masekela), Stoned Soul picnic (5th Dimension). We jammed that summer!! Music was always pumpin' back then!

  • @dggd Hey you! I love those 2 songs! They seem to evoke fun. Glad you enjoyed this.

  • Man , male singers back then could really sing & had strong vocals. Today name some r & b male singers who have powerful vocals????.

  • @GayBlkWorld I'm doing good. You are so right, there really aren't any male powerhouses in music anymore, very sad!

  • Hey my friend how's it?.

  • "Love the way I make my booty pop?" What the devil? Who says that?

That made me laugh by the way.

    Tooo funny, Al.

By the way...There's no such thing as a music geek...period.

    So you're good. haha

  • @Ike1129 LOL I forgot who that girl is that made that song, but Chris Brown sings on it with her. Thanks man, but I am a nerd for music tho! LOL

  • A good week for James Brown! :)

  • @soulstrength I think back then it was always a good week for JB! LOL

  • Oh wow...this was 3 months before I was born...WOW

Info on #19 - I'm from Gary and used to live not too far away from 1025 Taney St. I don't even know if that house is even still standing. You are a music connoisseur for real! Great post!! Thanks for the history.

  • @CharliGirl868 Thanks so much!V Wow, you're from Gary huh? It must have been something knowing you live not too far from the Jackson fam. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video!

  • @thruthealcove Not really...they pretty much had left Gary by the time I came around. They lived on another side of town considered Central and I lived an an area considered Tolleston...not all that close. The sad part of it all though is that the neighborhood has gone down so much and the area isn't what it used to be. It shouldn't have taken Michael passing away in order to fix up the house they grew up in. U need 2 do another video like this. Luv'd it.

  • @CharliGirl868 Okay didn't know that, thanks for that info. I don't have another classic Jet, so I can't do another one, but I have more music vids coming tho.

  • @thruthealcove I can't believe you have a Jet from 1968! What A Find! Any plans for the 4th of July?

  • @kjchicago1 I couldn't believe it either. No big plans for me. You?

  • @thruthealcove Just chilling out! Didn't know you liked Arthur Conley's "Funky Street"

  • @kjchicago1 I actually don't really, it's just on a compilation that I have, as well as some of the other songs on that list.

  • love it

  • @Bee318ti Well thanks so much B!

  • OMG! this is one of your best! I luv that u show those old record labels, some of which I've never heard of. You should do more like that from time to time!

  • @SistaRanBean Wow, really? Thanks so much, I was nervous putting this up, but man have the responses been great!!!

  • WOW! This took me waay back!!! It was SUCH a different time back then. Everyone had a type of elegance that just doesn't exist today! Thanks for this!

  • @hip2dadip Elegance, that word explains it all for me!!! So glad you enjoyed this man!

  • AWESOME ! I remember most of these songs. I was a first grader at Mark Twain Elementary School in St.Louis, Missouri. I lived at 5470 A Shreve. My mother was pregnant with my brother Kevin. Kevin was born June 17, 1968. My first grade teacher was Mrs Fields. My telephone number was Evergreen 5 - 0733. Is my age showing ? My I please have a quarter for a bag of penny candy ? Thanks for the memories Thruthealcove .

  • @Gerri000 I could get a bag of Lance Cookies from the corner store for 10cents! I remember those days!

  • @Gerri000 MY GOODNESS, what a little video can provoke!!! LOL Thanks for sharing that, I remember when my great-grandmother still used words as the phone number!

  • PLSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!

  • @tymurren5 Kick rocks heffa! LOL

  • My uncle Charles collects Jet and Ebony magazines. I think his collection begins in the 1960s through 1990s.

  • @dlastqueen That's so cool, you should look through them one of these days!

  • I love your love of music!

  • @neselvince Thanks so much!

  • Lol Thanks for song #8 i'll be sure to play it Thursday.

  • @thacomplex1 LMAO you nut!!!

  • Bro, Good Video! You know I am really starting to realize your a real history BUFF! I can tell you really enjoy learning & discussing history! (I shouldve already noticed this though, lol) SB: Nice Shades!!

  • @sonofprophecy57 Hey you, thanks! I just love hearing about what came before me & learning from it. It's a great feeling too.

  • OK, so why do my parents have every Jet and Ebony Magazine from 1962-1968?..no lie! My dad keeps them archives in a file box. They are in mint condition..its amazing! Whats up with the shades? You are inside and there is no sun..lol #justsayin...LMAO Luv you Kev! :-)

  • @verballyunspoken Mike, why must you always come for me, WHY??? LOL Luv u man! You're parents must have this one then, what a treasure trove they must have!

  • I ABSOLUTLY loved this video! This is the best yet! The old jet magazine was an awesome idea, much love my brother.

  • @coolasschick Hey sis, I'm so glad you liked this one, it's very different from me. I wasn't sure how y'all was gonna react to it, but so far everybody is feeling this!!! Much love sis!

  • OMG It's so unbelievable how young Michael Jackson sounded back in the day!

  • @AS7607 I know right, so young, but very mature!

  • hey man! good to see ya. enlightening video. visiting history is a beautiful thing.

  • @nine110 Hey you, so good to hear from you! I love history, you walk away feeling different after you learn something from it.

  • I always love stopping by to see whats new... this was a fun piece of history that you uncovered and shared. I wasn't born yet but still kinda nice to see/hear. Like you I have every one of those tracks. Guess it comes from being a Great DJ with a wide variety of music that span's across many Genres. I look forward to seeing more videos in the futures. Until next time... Peace Love and Chicken Grease

  • @SilverFoxEnt Hey fam, good to hear from you again! We must be 2 of the biggest music geeks to have all 20 of those songs, I'm still SMH at that! LOL Tell the fellas I said hey & much love to you as always!

  • Great to see you! I have been in that 60's mood. I been listening to Tammi Terrell. It was a coincidence that the Unsung show was on all day Sunday and Tammi Terrell was on.

  • @kiasky1 Hey! My cable carrier doesn't have TVOne, so I missed it, but Tammi is the TRUTH!!!

  • Hey bro! LOVE this!!!! You know that Supremes song, "Forever Came Today?" The Jackson 5 remade that in 1975. I actually like their version better. Check that one out. Anyhow....I'm really glad you put this up. I never knew half the things you mentioned. I would like to get a copy of the old Jet Magazines. Thanks for posting! :-) Oh, by they way....I don't know if I told you, but I'm a distant relative of Otis Redding! No joke! Please don't lose that Jet! That is TRUE history!

  • @MzTJones80 Hey sis!!! Ummm, you must have forgotten who you're talking to when it comes to music!!! LOL I prefer the J5's version too. I'm so glad everybody is feeling this video, I wasn't sure what kind of reaction I was gonna get from it. And if you don't start making videos, I can't even begin to imagine what you're story is like!!! LOL

  • @thruthealcove

Yes, I've been thinking about doing that, because I have LOTS to share! I'll keep you posted!

  • Great video! Although black people have progressed, some things have remained the same (i.e. surviving in a bad economy & racial issues). Unfortunately, today's music can't be compared to the classic songs made in the 60's.

  • @TheMariposaloca Thanks! That is so true, so many things are still around, which is sad. And the music, all that diversity in just 20 songs. All I can do is SMH at what we have now. Oh well, glad you enjoyed this!

  • Wow, I remember all of those songs except the first couple of them......".the funky four corners" ," the African twist"- dances back in the day ...LOL ......yes we have come along way ....our family of 7 only had an income of 40 dollars a week ...times were different but we survived and moved on to better days .......well more income anyway ..........enjoyed this, fantastic that you had such a treasure trove of history in one Jet Magazine .....respect brother!

  • @Backatwon OMG I was waiting to read what you had to say man! What I loved was the diversity of those 20 songs & how well the stories inside were put together. It seemed more realistic, unlike today's version of Jet. Just gossip-ish & stuff. But hey, we did move on to better times, not musically tho. Glad you enjoyed this!!!

  • @thruthealcove Haven't seen a Jet in years ....figured it had changed since those days ..but so has the rest of the media .....in those days there were so few black people to gossip about ...;-)

  • DUDE, this was fun. I few of them flew over my head but i knew a few. When the number one came on (shameless) i got up and started dancing, footwork and all. #POW

  • @bullabelly Come on & do the Mashed Potatoes!!! LOL This was a fun one, I enjoyed making this!

  • Much Love ...Travis

  • @XlaviathanX Thanks Trav, good to hear from you man!

  • That is some cool stuff there. I love looking through old magazines to see what they had back then. Hey we are going to be in New York this coming Sunday to see the Statue of Liberty. Not sure how close you are, but it will be Sunday afternoon.

  • @COOLIKEDATAZIAN I love that too, imagine my surprise when I found it! I'm quite far, but we can always meet up in the city. Call or text me before the week is over okay?

  • Amazing vid bro.. enjoyed it as usual:)

  • @TheLadyRealist4real Thanks sis, I knew you would enjoy it!

  • Why am I laughing at James Brown's 'I Got The Feelin' (thinkin' about The Cosby Show w/ Anna & Russell. Silly self!).

  • @WordSmith79 Trav, you so damn MESSY!!!!!!! LMAO But that was my though last night when I uploaded this & started laughing all over again!!! LOL

  • AWESOME VIDEO. The funny thing about Jet is that if you placed that 43 year old issue in the barber shop today, someone would actually pick it up and find something of interest. You have a serious collector's item Kevin. I'd place that issue of Jet in a frame...seriously.

  • @seand67 Thanks Sean! I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it, but I'm not parting with it tho. I'm sure the barbers alone would take the whole work day just talking about what's in it!

  • Wow. What an insightful vid. Jugding by the date, this mag was released the exact same month my dad graduated from high school,. He turns 60 this year. My how times have changed; in ways for the better (regarding opportunities for Black folks), AND for the worse, (musically).

  • @tincredible WOW, you're comment is just, WOW!!! LOL So your father should know all of these songs then. You should show him this video & blow his mind with it! LOL And don't get me started on the musical aspect!!! : )

  • @thruthealcove I will definitely show dad this vid. He'll LUV it. He's a music junky too; with an extremely sharp memory (he was actually the valedictorian of the Class of '68). He's so good, he can tell you what semester of what grade he was in when a certain song came out. lol.

  • good to see you man ,peace...

  • @MrDigzm Hey, good to hear from you!

  • Amazing time capsual..

  • @VenessaVB It sure is!

  • WOW! Amazing... what a mini BET.. you should of showed us more of the magazine.. I love antique stuff.. so vintage.. Damm James Brown had 3 hits on that chart..

  • @YoBoiNewnue Now you know JB will ALWAYS be the man Newnue!!! I would have loved to have shown some pics, but I did this video so fast, I didn't have time to scan some stuff. Glad you liked this one man.

  • Great video thruthealcove! I wish I was born during those times to experience things as spectacular as that.

  • @brandosoul You & me both bro, what a difficult, but fun & interesting time that must have been to be apart of. Thanks so much man!

  • I wish I had one of those old Jet magazines. lol Great video.

  • @MusicLoverForever1 It really was a great find, thanks!

  • I only recognize about half of these songs. I've never heard #13 before; however I'm loving it.

  • @nerocentric That's cool, that Bobby Byrd track is tough! LOL

  • EXCELLENT VIDEO!

  • @bvw1981 Thanks man!

  • @bvw1981 DE NADA SENOR!

  • Wow! I was only familiar with 12 of the 20. I remember I used to sing, "Take me back, I'm fulla disease" instead of "Take me back, consider me please" in Since You Been Gone.

    Great video.

  • @TruthSerum101 12 out of 20 ain't bad. LOL I think we all were guilty of singing the wrong lyrics to songs when we were younger. LOL

  • I loved this video so much. First of all, that Jet magazine was a really good find. I love finding newspapers and magazines from back in the day. I didn't know Jackie Kennedy Onasis attended MLK's funeral either. Secondly, playing the songs on the top 20 countdown was great. It made me miss the radio stations back in Cali that played old school R&B. They just don't have that sort of thing where I live now, so it was nice to hear them. Now I have more music to check out. Thanks for the vids.

  • @TrappedInTheToilet Hey, so glad you enjoyed this video! When I found that magazine, I was so inspired to do this video. I know what you mean about those radio stations, we barely have that where I live anymore too. Thanks again!
