  • 6 thousand dollar dslr setup and a 5 dollar calculator to film the video. i dont get it

  • hahahaha "photography bydon" if you know wath it s that in french....

  • Don this is great! I never ventured to macro because I thought you would need a twin bracket system which was more than I could spend, this solution yields great results and cost effective it appears! Thanks! jon

  • Time to update your video - great tips but the quality of video is antiquated.

  • thanks very nice

  • would you recommend the around the lens flash (like on the lens, the ones e.g. with L.E.D.'s)

  • Gr8 video!

  • Nice configuration. I personally use a twin flash ring in TTL for taking shots of flowers or insects. i never thought that the tiny softbox could do the job fine too. Thank you for your video.

  • hi iam photomanpic i hope you see my new videos i will publish next week

  • now i want to go out and try this! great job

  • Vids are good

  • Why is he pathetic u dick!!?, don gale is a very good teacher, I have never met the guy but his DVDs and YouTube id

  • i have bracketed at 1.5 stops by taking 3 shots, but each time moving the light around. and have got some interesting results. and combine the 3 to get the perfect exposure.

  • Thanks for this video! I'm kinda new to photography and very new to macro photography. Had some hard times using my flash though. I've got a Pentax k200d with a nice external flash but P-TTL makes all my pictures too dark. M mode works but isn't really very speady to work with...Is it normal that TTL makes all the pictures underexposed(when shooting in macro)?

  • Awesome idea using the off camera flash.

  • I think the pictures at the end should state which technique you used earlier to produce that photo. Other than that, fantastic video!

  • Hi Kathy,

The small soft box is made by LumiQuest. Tey have several sizes...I'm using the Big Box. It's very light and super easy to attach with the velcro system they provide...try it, you'll like it.....don

  • You are so creative. I love the effects you achieved. Your softbox looks custom made. It looks like a plastic lens with a material covering, maybe using velcro? I would love to know how you made that. It looks lite weight. Thanks. Kathy

  • Guys, I'm sure the macros are beautiful; the conversion to low rez video does present images well.

Don, I think sharing your techniques is a great thing.

  • ignore my arrogance but i was expecting better photos than the outcome.

  • The first pic was overexposed but nice pics.

  • I really like the idea of back lighting the flowers.

  • the end picture: flowers look like floating in the air

  • lol....

    the flash was big!

  • great video---make more

  • will do. glad you like em....don

  • It's a Lumaquest. :)

  • I love macro, I love nature, but having to carry so much gear with you in the wild just puts me off. Will it ever be possible to do great macros with less gear?

  • No, not at this level.

My setup for Macro Photography is even heavier than Don´s, a Sony Alpha 700 & 900 Body with a Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM G Lens (much more flexible than fixed-focal macro lenses) with Kenko Adaptor Rings and two Flashes (HVL-Sony HVL-F58AM and HVL-F56AM), both with a Lumiquest Softbox on it.

  • I don't use anything nearly as close to the gear that you just saw in this Macro video. What I use is this:

Canon SLR with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I attach a Kenko Extension tube to that lens. I usually use the 20mm tube to suit my taste.

And thats it!...if you want to see what I'm talking about, just click on "salpedi" and then go to all my Macro slideshows.

And I do most of my Macro shooting in my backyard patio on a table with the flowers.

  • Hi Don, thank you for sharing your technique with us. What is this "softbox" you have over your flash ? I bought one for my flash, but it is a hard plastic piece that slides over the head of the flash, but this thing you use interests me greatly. Thank you.
