you DO need the exhaust. The engine and the turbo need at least backpressure. Go for a nice 3" or bigger exhaust from turbo with a nice 100 or 200 cell metal cat and you are fine. I suggest to have 1 or better 2 silencers though. I got two on mine and it is just right, sometimes it is even to loud

similar sound were on my V70R-04, the Cat dropped from the turbo, so the car just sounded obnoxiously high. the car sounded like it were going on anabola.
