Even if a church has all their doctrinal ducks in a row, if they're as dead in the spirit and love as the old "orthodox" churches then union won't fix a thing. The whole concept of a physical, corporate "body of Christ" needs to be dispelled. It's all about love and the Holy Spirit acting through all of us and no council, pope, or ritualized, nationalized church body will bring the world to Christ.
@OneHolyTrinity The Church must have some sort of physical basis, because it is a community made up of human beings, not just spiritual entities. You'll find that the Church's "physical" body is the less physical body possible, since it is not based on some racial parameter (as the old israelite community) or national (as people of all nationalities are its members). And you'll see that the movements that sought to dismember such a body were deep down an attack on christianity itself.
Don't spread just any christianity. Spread Orthodoxy. It's not a matter of ethnicity anymore, it's a matter of saving the world from the horrors of islamic theocracies!
The greek orthodox people need to stop being intolerant. you can't go to a greek orthodox church and have blue eyes and pale skin without people secretly hating you inside. maybe i should go to a romanian orthodox church where my western european features won't be looked at with dismay. maybe because these people are the congregation of Ephesus, they are arrogant. i dont know, but i'm getting tired of it
@TubaGlider2 Fail. anyhoo. Maybe they should be happy that a former catholic added himself to their quickly dwindling population. Just my opinion. And dont ask me how the church of Ephesus ended up in Shreveport, Louisiana of all places. Maybe God wants me to help them change their ways. Maybe I say maybe too much, maybe I don't say maybe enough. Maybe nobody knows anything and God just has a blueprint in heaven. Who knows? God, that's who.
No discussion with seperated catholics. But all catholics can lovely become orthodox, true christians. Damn the pope, who think he is the representator of god on earth.
@VaginaDieBreite That guy you speak of is the successor of Saint Peter, called the "Rock upon which the Church will be built" by the Christ himself. The orthodox don't wish to submit entirely to his authority on western terms, but they still respect him as the Bishop of Rome, whose position has a very special historical and symbolical significance. Insulting him is much more proper of a protestant or a muslim, whose hate for the Church enthralls a hate for christianity itself.
The dialogue between the Catholic and Orthodox church is more complicate. It would be sooooooo easy to say each other "turn around and come to me, then the curch will be united". There´s no sense because the reality is different. I think the very best way is to pray for the union. Humen aren´t able but God is!
But is so easy for Rome think that we are just more one group that need to come home to Rome, but when we say the Rome may be Orthodox we are crazy, and yes guy, we need pray for this!
@lingualpfeife What you say is entirely true, it is much more complicated. Fortunately SS BXVI has accomplished a lot with some of the Orthodox Church's high officials, particularly with Constantinople, Ukraine, Cyprus and Romania. But there is still too much hate and ignorance on the lowest levels of both sides. And it is also true that without God union will never happen, and thus we must pray and hope. May the two halves of Christendom embrace each other and live as brethren again!
@Loiginer The Church is one already (as we say it in the niceno-constantinopolitan symbol), but unfortunately split into two halves due predominantly to canonical and historical differences, not theological ones. And it is evident you don't know what heresy is and its differences with schism, two perfectly clear and distinctive canonical figures. And you clearly haven't read either which is the schismatic half.
Who abandomn the Orthodoxy of the faith, abandomn the Church, there is no two bodies... Rome was excomunated, so it losts the apostolic sucession, study orthodox teology about it...
When someone is excomuniated from the Chuch, he/she have their sacraments taken, because of it orthodox priests will not be anymore priests if they abandomn church...
@Loiginer In 1054 A.D., the date commonly accepted as the schism's, the Pope's envoys (not the whole Church) were excommunicated by a constantinopolitan synod, because the Pope's envoys excommunicated the Patriarch of Constantinople first. We should see whether the synod could effectively excommunicate them according to canon law, being them alien to the synod's jurisdiction, envoys to the Bishop of Rome, and the synod acting without iusta causa according to canon law. Such an act sounds void.

Such an act sounds void to me.
@Loiginer The sacking of Constantinople by the 4th crusade was strongly reprimanded by Pope Innocent III, and it was actually the only time he was seen to cry in public. Still, an excommunication needed certain requirements to be met in order to be valid according to canon law, which were not met on that occasion. Also, an excommunication made by the Patriarchate of Constantinople could not affect the other Patriarchates's relationship to Rome or to other western bishopries.
@Loiginer Their factical agreement with Constantinople (if it was indeed as unanimous as some people say) has no bearing whatsoever on their relationship with Rome unless they had been canonically submited to Constantinople, and if that was the case, then the eastern patriarchates and their local bishopries were not as independent as it is commonly said, in which case Rome's claim to supremacy is strengthened and thus the excommunication by the Patriarchate of Constantinople is radically void.
@1990RFD Interesting point--that Pope Innocent III wept publicly, yet neither he, nor generations of his successors were moved enough to return Holy Orthodox relics that were plundered in 1204. Many Orthodox relics and icons can still be found in the Vatican. The survival of the Orthodox Church is truly a miracle. Despite attacks on the Church by Islam, Communism and even our R. Catholic "'brothers" we thrive and continue to uphold the original faith.
@ukerkater The miracle is the survival of the whole Church, both Catholic and Orthodox halves. Islamic attacks were certainly not confined to Orthodox christians (Hungary, Austria, Poland, Italy and Spain suffered them greatly) and the attacks on the Orthodox were also met by westerners (remember the cause of the First Crusade, the Emperor's appeal to the Pope). Communism was brought down by John Paul II (the Catholic Pope) and Ronald Reagan (a Catholic president).
Sorry, UBTUNE, but I think that the Catholic Church has always shown its love for the Orthodox Church. Why are you saying those things? Pope has invited many times Bartholomaios I to Rome, and he invited Benedict XVI to Istambul... I think that our two churches are both on the way of communion and peace.
@1integrity Our Pope and all the Catholic Church apologized many times for its actions of the past, like crusades. I think that it is time to forget the past and walk together. Dear Ubtune, dear Miliardo5, dear 1integrity: instead of saying stupid things, be men of peace!
Catholics said to orthodox 3 times NO. So did St.Peter to Christ as Jesus was taken for questioning to Pilatus Peter said "Jesus i love u and i will never betray you". Christ then said to Peter" By morning 3 times u will forsake me". When morning came 3 times Peter Christ and when he remembered what Christ told hem Peter whipped and repended. So 3 schismata passed, Orthodox have all the love for Catholics, now its all up to catholics to return the love and repend to Christ Church as Peter did.
I will be very glad if someone could pass me the sheets of this for CHOIR
I will translate to portuguese, then we could use in our liturgies!
THANK YOU!
