The most likely extraterrestrials we encounter will be machines with the ability to self replicate and explore space left by some long dead intelligent lifeform. Which I also believe will have been a bipedal species not much unlike our own because I think it highly likely that nearly all higher society building organisms evolve in that manner. I doubt they will have been octopus shaped for instance, but that would be my next guess.

once man made nano organisms are programmed to self replicate they will eventually get loose into the environment and turn all matter on earth into a gray sludge.
