in midst of all these thoughtful comments i thought i would one of mine..what about the role of machines in the future and a religion revolved around machines!
its not like we dont have more than enough tech..it has reached so much in everyday life..at wht point will it tip to be a religion???
@socratesaka i`m currently reading a book by douglas hofstader called "godel, escher, bach" that deals with some fascinating ideas about a.i. and our inner selves etc.
@socratesaka very good thought, yet its sad that it is completely invoncievable to think what 1000 years from now's culture will be like. it is almost as if mathematics will inevitably become the new faith, as it is proven, tangible and can never be rewritten or misquoted and has no humanitarian consequences whatsoever. it just IS
@socratesaka thats the general conclusion i come to whenever i contemplate about the origin and purpose of the universe and everything else inside and outside it. haha its the ultimate explanation for everything, it just IS! why cant people just accept it?!?!

@NeXuzMotionzz most atheists are agnostic atheists, it is hard to get any less arrogant than that. My "childish questions" are the same as many philosophers, authors and scientists throughout time have asked. If a teacher knows with absolute certainty (hypothetical), then why not?
I am quite familiar with religious teachings, and i do not worship any man or woman!
The trap in to which most atheists like myself must NOT fall lays at the very beginning of the argument. It is to say "I do not believe".
"Belief" has no value for me. It is a word for believers. I do not "believe" there is no god and no afterlife, I KNOW, there isn't any. It is knowledge, not belief.
Also : the monotheist "god" is schyzophrenic : "I am the only god, and I am a jealous god."
"-as if he has never heard of the equivocation fallacy with such lack of conception of the one true god is beyond belief" can you make that into a proper sentence please?
@fuckamericanidiot you are obviously not familiar with the stream of consciousness manner of writing which i adopt on the cyber realm most of the time so NO!!
lol how arrogant do you have to be to dismiss monotheism in a repulsive way and embrace the greek myth of polytheism with words like "beautiful" and "charming" and then have the stupidity to then go on and compare them as if he has never heard of the equivocation fallacy with such lack of conception of the one true god is beyond belief. Apart from that, mildly insightful.
@NeXuzMotionzz What are you talking about? He never embraced greek polytheism with words like "beautiful" and "charming". He explisitly pointed out that nature is painful and unforgiving. Based on that you can not argue that there is any god or gods, that are all-loving, all-knowing and all-mighty. He therefore made the case that if there is gods/god they are not all-loving, beautiful or charming. They are unkind, temperamental and unpleasant!
@DeepIntoMyThoughts he discredits monotheism saying it's ghastly cant be taken seriously, then in the same breath gives precedence to greek gods saying personification of natural wonders into gods makes more sense. He would love ancient times when polytheism was the norm and monotheists were being laughed at. So my problem isn't that he rejects both types of theism but rather prefers one over the other. But he also made the point you are referring to but I dont agree with it either, c next post.
@NeXuzMotionzz Stephen Fry is, as he points out, a humanist. I therefore doubt that "he would love ancient times when polytheism was the norm" (at least not for that reason). He simply points out that if you empirically observe nature, polytheism seems more likely than montheism. He is personally a humanist and don't believe in monotheism, nor polytheism.
@DeepIntoMyThoughts Because god is powerful enough to stop the suffering, loving enough to want to stop it, and knows that suffering exists as he is all-knowing, then there shouldn't be any suffering but clearly there is so such a god cannot exist. This argument has a logical flaw, because there may be good reasons for god to allow suffering to exist so even if he has good reasons to want to stop it, he may have better reasons to allow suffering. And there are many reasons like free will etc....
@NeXuzMotionzz I find it hard to believe that god has a good reason to let millions of people live there entire life in hunger, and die of horrible diseases before the age of 10. What possible reason could all-loving god have for creating "the black death"? All the pointless suffering just so all-powerful god could let us have free will? I am sorry, but if that god is to exist, he will have to finde a better way to enforce free will upon us
@DeepIntoMyThoughts very good 1st question but the second is flawed, " he will have to finde a better way to enforce free will upon us", if will is enforced then it is not free lol. Another reason linked to free will is found in Islamic theology which renders this life to be a test the result of which will be announced in the afterlife. So the fact god is testing us means there is going to be a variety out of which we will have both good and bad experiences. So joy and pain will be present.
@NeXuzMotionzz I fear you have failed to see the irony in my last post. The abrahamic god have supposedly created man with free will. But yet, if man does not praise this narcissistic god he will burn for eternity. An atheist can live a kind and loving life, but he will still burn in hell for not believing in god! That is not "free" will!
@DeepIntoMyThoughts Your last post contained a contradiction not irony. By just saying "But yet, if man does not praise god", you admit that a human has the capability to reject god which in itself is indication of choice and free will.
To deny, rebuke and defile the creator of heaven and hell, the creator of emotions such as love and kindness, then to complain about why he is punishing you is just funny lol.
Someone who thinks we are nothing but stardust shouldn't use words like love anyways.
@NeXuzMotionzz Irony and contradiction does not exclude one another. I find the contradictions in the abrahamic religions, that you yourself have pointed out, ironic. If someone points a gun to your head, and says that you have to believe them, you are not truly free to make your own choice. btw: we are discussing if a all-loving god can exist, there is however not any evidence to support that he does.
@NeXuzMotionzz I'm impressed. I love the way your arrogance and ignorance dance around and create the most convoluted reasonings. It's almost beautiful.
@NeoConsREvil I'm not impressed. I love the way when you have no counter-argument, you hide behind the debilitated criticisms of convoluted reasoning and cognitive thinking. One expects a little more from the sect that refers to itself as "brights". It's almost ridiculous lol.
@NeXuzMotionzz Anyone who believes in that bullshit novel called the 'Bible' or the 'Quran' or whatever other bedtime fairytale that gives them comfort should be far more secure about their own righteousness...
@TiaraAlonso It's funny to see people just singing the same song they learned off dawkins or sam harris, taking whatever they have to say as the sole 100% gospel truth lol. Stop ranting about the outdated cliche painting all the religions with the same brush. It show laziness and lack of will to inquire and learn and makes you look stupid and arrogant instead of "bright".
Righteousness? lol you believe it has evolved just like our teeth and ears, stop fooling yourself with subjective morality!!
There IS only basic, evolved morality and subjective morality. And you shouldn't project your kind of blind faith and following onto others. I have never read a single "atheist"-themed book in my life, only religiously themed stuff.
Do you think that they cut these videos off when people like Stephen Fry, Richard Dawkins, Niel deGrasse Tyson because they finally snap and just Rip the shit out of religion lol
@Spaceman2921 Maybe some jackass homophobic "rearranged " it. And besides, what the hell has his nose to do with anything? Please! Don't vote! You're only polluting the electorate even further.
@Spaceman2921 It's kind of sad the way things are these days. I really feel bad for gay folks. I sure as shit know they didn't "choose" this route as the prefered route to live their lives.
@Texmurphy51 disbelief - inability or refusal to believe or to accept something as true. But that's not the point. Any argument that requires "belief" without providing evidence will not change a *rational* mind. On the other hand, every rational mind will be changed by an argument that has valid evidence supporting it. It is not a matter of belief or disbelief. Now, the more complex the question, the more room there is for misinterpretation and false proof. There is only one truth
@Texmurphy51 Yes, you can actually refuse to believe. I know that I DON'T know whether there is or isn't a God. This is NOT a "belief" but a FACT. I refuse to BELIEVE any teachings (scientific ones included) that don't provide factual proof. I might consider them as less or more plausible/interesting, but they won't change my mind. I KNOW for example gravity exists, not because I believe but because I've seen proof. This is why I will not jump off a building. See?
@Texmurphy51 quit talking about what happened before Big Bang, as if its your only argument. Science hasn't made any claims as to what happened then other than giving possible theories, how does that make science wrong? (which is what you are trying to say??) Science has proven the existence of gravity.I do refuse to believe anything until I "see it with my own eyes",it is called skepticism. YOU can't know what I believe. You also sound like a religious fanatic with your faulty logic
the meaning of life-"Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations". sounds about right.
Your intellect you share with a diversity of opinion, more than there are people alive on the earth with those thoughts left in records for us to contemplate, some believe in nature others that with the supernatural, the invisible world, gravity, light, dark, wave lengths, local and cosmic, speed of 'life' greater than the speed of 'light' science only now aware of the reality of a God particle. Your philosophy would unfold further were you to contemplate the latter. Thanks for the post.
The more I listen to him the more I love him! Stephen Fry is who I aspire to be- in the way I think and live my life! He's just such an amazing person, unlike any other person in the media (that I know of). He makes me retract my thoughts that there is nothing good in the world.
What scares me is the idea of jail. Sure I believe in rehab, but now power and authority actually does have a place to send you for tourture for disobedience and thought crime for as long as you live.
"Learning to think: in our schools one no longer has any idea of this. Even in the universities, even among the real scholars of philosophy, logic as a theory, as a practice, as a craft, is beginning to die out. One need only read German books: there is no longer the remotest recollection that thinking requires a technique, a teaching curriculum, a will to mastery — that thinking wants to be learned like dancing, as a kind of dancing."
@THALIDO Well if you can appreciate what he says, I am sure you definitely have half his brain ... you will also have the other half if you read and learn enough :D good luck! (same for all of us)
I think we should just wonder about things. Not deny anything we dont know, but dont believe in things we dont know either. Then talk to each other about our wonders and hope that we may land on the minuscule chance of discovery.
@maneatingtoilets "Each to his own" as it were, I agree. I'm astounded why people, as an example, don't believe in evolution. We have ever-growing evidence as a race, of evolution, the extinction of the neanderthal etc. Yet people are so quick to take faith as fact, which by its very definition, is controversial.
As much as I love Stephen, he is wrong about some of the philosophers. Kant actually offers a code for how one should live his life. It is actually quite well-known and I can't understand how he can not know about it.
The world is set on and to some extent depends on your religion. If you have a faith, then you defend it to your death, and thats fine if thats what you believe, but for those who need proof there is no way that all the religious dogma can substantiate anything that has been written in any scriptures of any religion. How can a human being with the power to think and learn be expected to beleive that some deity is out there controlling us and a universe that is so large we cant comprehend it?
I have been an atheist since the age of 11 - oddly enough, I realised that I didn't believe in God during a Religious Education lesson at school. I just can't believe in something for which there is no evidence, particularly when religion purports that homosexuality is wrong, women are second-best to men and that slavery is fine.
I say, enjoy your life! Treat others with respect, do not feel guilty about who you fall in love with and just have a great time, because in my opinion, this is it!
@tantan627 Hear hear! In comparison to the normal sorts of comments I see around here, that was a masterpiece! You are entitled to your own beliefs, just as anyone else is entitled to theirs.
I like to believe that their is a God, that belief has got me through some hard times. I'm not definitely saying there is a God but I am saying that a belief in God has helped me a lot.
However, I would like to say that I belong to no religion that exists today as I can see no religion that follows their own rules; and even if they followed all those rules, most of them are prejudicial, unfair and offensive. This is all something God would not want, especially from his supposed preachers.
@tantan627 change 'God' to 'not facing reality' and you get :
'I like to believe in not facing reality. Not facing reality has got me through some hard times. I'm definitely not saying that there is no reality, but I am saying that a belief in not facing reality has helped me a lot.'
I said '"I'm not definitely" which shows uncertainty, not "I'm definitely not" as you misquoted. It may seem insignificant but it makes a pretty big difference because it shows that I am not a devoutly religous person whereas your misquote would imply that I am an atheist. Otherwise fair enough if you think that there is no God, I can't say I blame you, especialy with all the crap that happens today and in today's society.
@tantan627 You're right, I misquoted - my bad on that. However, I don't see how that changes my point.
"Otherwise fair enough if you think that there is no God," I don't think that.
I understand that reality is : there may or may not be real God(s). I also understand that IF there are real God(s), they are not found in religions. People imagining and 'fleshing out' imaginary God(s) to control others in their names, have no bearing on whether or not real Creator(s) exist.
@tantan627 I wasn't disagreeing so much as pointing out that you were giving credit where it wasn't do.
You could have just as easily believed in Thor, or Vishnu, a magic rabbit's foot, or whatever, to 'help you through tough times' and gotten the same results. In essence, they're all the same as my original synonym for God - 'not facing reality'.
So... What credit did I give? I just said that personally, having a belief to concentrate on has helped me, whether it's true or not.
Actually, I was about to argue that I resent that I "don't face reality" but you may be right. About some things like my education I just do, but things like the stronger emotions and relationships where I'm not in complete control, I do seem to wait for some sort of miracle. You may have just seriously helped me out in life, thank you.
I believe that there is a God - who triggered the big bang, and simply waits in the afterlife. I don't claim to know anything, because I don't. I haven't been to the afterlife. I won't say that science is wrong - it is clearly more correct than many religious views in my opinion, but it does not answer what is before the big bang, nor does it confirm it from what I have learned. It does not tell us what's next either. If we're just energy reacting in pre-programmed DNA, this is one sad exsitence
@matthewjaques94 I would think the bible would have mentioned the "big bang" being the single most significant event in history............. but alas the writers did not know of such a thing for they believed the earth was the center of our universe...... too bad
@EvolBob1 let's not to be overly generous. keeping and open mind along with a healthy amount of skepticism isn't necessarily going to "cure" a person of the all the various ailment in life. even thinking for yourself, you're going to encounter problems, and specific to your being able to keep an open mind. the difference is at least those thoughts will be your own and not manufactured by some prescription you never questioned.
That is amazing. I always struggle to get as much in as possible - considering this 500 character limit. Thats a whole book above!
I may come off a bit too strong or silly, but that is the nature of YT posts. It is the heart of the matter, where good people have (unknowingly) put all their faith and energy in suspending credibility concerning their religion. In all other areas of their life, critical thinking poses no problem.
@EvolBob1 Absolutely, my friend. Continue to expand your knowledge and enjoy what life has to offer and love those dear to you. I'll be doing the same. Cheers
Oh, did that god told you personally that he'll send you to hell? Or was it the priest at sunday school?
Religious are happy, guilt free, sleep good, enjoy sex (how else would they reproduce, Einstein?), HOW THE HELL DOES FAITH DEFINE HOW LONG YOU LIVE, so it automatically makes you smarter? I just didn't know you could fit your stupidity in one comment...
@vikingWindmill Well, lets see, the priest at Sunday school had roaming hands, and did mention I'd go to hell. Enjoying sex has nothing to do with reproduction. Atheist live longer - try it. And you have succeeded with your last point infinitely better than I have.
@vikingWindmill Worst argument ever. You picked one young man who died and that's that. How about I give you an equally stupid example of a theist who died young. Jesus - 33. Boom!
@vikingWindmill I showed your argument was stupid by making a shit reply. Deal with it. I was with you in your little argument with that other person until you decided to use the untimely death of nice man as a way of pointing out atheists don't live forever. Bravo. You can do better than that.
Oh sure, and him saying that atheists live longer is not silly at all. Last time I checked 60 years isn't exactly a long life. Try harder, but don't hurt yourself in the process.
There is no meaning of life if there is no God. This difficult life wouldnt make any sense. Would 'this' be all there is? No, there has to be more than this life here. His promise makes much more sense than what mortals have argued and challenged. 'deny me here and I will deny you in heaven'. It's a statement that I take seriously. But that's just me.
@femmesusan1 In this vein, you could make up anything to believe in and it would have just as much validity, but please admit that you are choosing to believe in something that is just a story.
@jones6119 "but please admit that you are choosing to believe in something that is just a story". No, I can't. There is a God. Please admit that you do-believe in Him. I think that you're angry at him b/c something went wrong in your life. I hope you can find peace in your heart. He loves you.
@femmesusan1 Now come on: you've come up with a lot of valid arguments over the last couple of pages. Don't let your responses degenerate into the primary-school psychology of "You are lashing out at this because you have been hurt in the past". It's just insulting.
jones6119's comment was unnecessary as it showed a lack of respect for or willingness to understand your arguments, however your response was even less helpful as it reinforces the view a lot of athiests have of ignorant christians.
@Krolblach You are obviously NOT an ignorant christian, you are an intelligent one, so act like one even when you come up against ignorance and intolerance.
I can't believe that our creator would let babies be born sick and die -w/o there being an after life that awaits them (or other atrocities) we living- witness. W/o evil there would be no good. Everything we know would be perfect, and it obviously is not. And who-apointed you, Mr Fry to explain why there isn't a God? B/c you- in your divine wisdom think it so? You are a living joke w/ an ego as big as the internet. We all need to believe in a higher being, or life is sadder that we think.
@Mikodite Nobody appointed him or anyone else, to translate the Bible or the word of God. If you think of God as being a supernatural big brother, then don't get upset over us that praise him and believe in him. I think we will have to answer to a higher power when we die, for the wrong we have done here on earth. I'm intitled to my beliefs, and you're intitled to believe in nothing. It's simple. I love God. You don't. Life would have no meaning if this life is all there is.
@femmesusan1 Yes, you are 'entitled' to your beliefs, and I gather one of those beliefs is that there is no meaning if there is no God. Let that sink in for a sec.
@SacredSoul1990 The greatet feat the devil has EVER accomplished, is to make you believe he doesn't exist. He does, and he's very busy spewing his evil every where. I don't know why all of evil exists or what Gods plan is for us here. It seems to me that the only reason we are here, is to help one another.. For me, or anyone to try to be on the same level of conciousness as God is delusional. He's God. We are only humans. And we will all find out 'why' in the end. Not from Fry.
@femmesusan1 That's a very poetic way to put things, I like that but it still does not change my opinion. I refuse to believe in a God who condemns people to hell simply because they did not believe in him in life regardless of whether the person was kind and caring or ruthless and cruel. A truly just God to me is One that punishes and rewards according to the actions of the person and not how much he believes in him.
@SacredSoul1990 Even if God was like that I don't think it would be perfect, because each person is different. Why are we different? We don't really know apart from the fact that we all have different brains, same sort of structure yet there's so many differences. I think those differences are natural some people are just born bad for example someone may enjoy killing or think it's perfectly normal. Then there's society it changes peoples opinions and views on life and morality.
@subby7866 Good point. I completely forgot about that. Well, that's absolutely true. Brain chemistry does play an important role in determining a person's behavior so I guess simply judging people by their actions is also unfair. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
@SacredSoul1990 Here you are 'judging' God.What I'm hearing is a retaliatory threat to him: I refuse to believe in you b/c you send good people to hell just b/c they didn't believe in you. That's all he asks. Believe in me.You're giving God conditions. No- God gives US conditions. You cant tell him how to be a better God b/c a certain way makes more sense to you.He asked you to love him unconditionally. You have conditons based on your sense of fair play. He judges. not you.
@femmesusan1 It is interesting that you have continued this discussion for as long as you have, it almost makes me wonder if you have some doubts. So let me clear it up. I'll imagine all the things you say are true, the one thing from all of that I can't accept - even if your God is real - is that he will send me to Hell if I don't worship him, or believe in him, or love him, or whatever! I know if I had Gods power with my limited brain, I couldn't do this to anyone. Is god less than human?
@EvolBob1 I've only answered comments directed to me.I have zero doubts. God made the laws in which he wanted us to live by basically the 10 commandments. He also made us and asked only that we believe and praise him and try to follow his laws. I didn't say it- HE did. You nor I cant even begin to think on his level. He is above human. I know some things he reveals in the Bible sound scary but what happens after death is up to you.He warns us.I sin but I'm sorry & I know he forgives me
@femmesusan1 If I've wronged someone I'll ask them for forgiveness, so if you've wronged God in anyway forgive yourself. The true god lives within you and is your only moral compass. The dipstick in the Bible is completely fictitious. No one should be expected to follow what they can't understand, or will be incapable of understanding, so why do you?
Even a dumb god would understand that!...another reason why I'm an Atheist.
@EvolBob1 Why do you feel a need to explain or knock your inability to understand the Bible? I don't understand a lot of it, but what I do- works for me I don't understand Sanskrit grammar but it exists. Why does one fly in an airplane if one can't describe exactly how it works? One who has have faith doesn't need to understand God to the letter. The enthusiasim of your atheism suits you, and I'm glad you're happy w/ it. That's all that matters. Be happy w/ your decision.. .
@femmesusan1 : I'm curious, why are my needs your concern?
Faith; for me it is God is good, as long he is completely absent, and I'm so delighted my faith is rewarded every day!
Lets see, God is real, and a plane is something in a book you need faith in - oops I got that backward. Jesus, I have so many inabilities!
Seriously though I've read the Bible, and it has convinced me it is a total work of fiction. You would have to know that as well femmesusan1, if you use the brain god gave you.
@EvolBob1 I was educated in the UK in the 40s and 50s. Religious instruction was compulsory. As part of the so-called "classical education" that I received was to translate Martin Luther's Alte Deutsch (Old German) into English. That taught me to not only disbelieve virtually everything in the Bible but to actually hate the Bible.
I wouldn't go as far to endorse one to hate the Bible, but hate some of what is proposed. I am more amazed at what is left out - which is for me a sure sign it is fiction.
If one is going to Hate, hate the persons actions, rather than the person, otherwise you are the only one that suffers.
@SacredSoul1990 I see you doubt his existence. As subby7866 said and u agreed-some people are 'born bad'. No baby is born bad. God says where evil comes from. The devil is so pleased when we blame sin, sickness or 'bad brain chemistry' on God. It's just what he wants you to think. Again w/o out evil there would only be good. no hate, illness, crime, etc. I wish there was only good on this earth. I wish I had all of the answers.
@femmesusan1 I can see that you're a kind and loving person but I sincerely doubt either one of us will be able to change the other's opinion but you are much more level headed than many of the christians and also the atheists here on Youtube and for that, you have my respect.
@SacredSoul1990 What a very kind thing to say. Thank you very much, and you too have my respect. Anger doesn't belong when people are trying to understand each other and respect what the other believes. It's when the screaming and insulting starts, that there is doubt. If you are secure in your beliefs there is peace. Peace to you:)
@femmesusan1 So as long as you belive(without any empirical proof of his existence, notwithstanding an ancient middle-eastern collection of fairy stories) in an invisible,all-powerful, omnipotent magic man,you are superior to those silly atheist are you?You are the joke.Grow up and stop believing in fairy tales.
@laiosto I am superior to No one. Atheists are not silly! they just don't believe in God. In believing you don't need all of the proof you are asking for, you just need faith, and faith is something I 'feel'. Many Asians believe in Buddahs teachings. Good for them, but I would never call him an 'omnipotent magic man', liao, his teachings are profound. You telling me, what to believe is the joke, I love God- and you can never change that.
I like Stephen Fry, but he's gravely mistaken about at least one thing in this video. To say that there isn't a Kantian way of living a moral life is simply untrue. Kant devoted a huge deal of his time to establishing a deontological moral code known as the Categorical Imperative.
@dpthomas37 I believe in the teachings in jesus (be nice) but don't live my life by them same with the Buddha's techings I just believe in facts and don't feel like those religions are based on facts I'm very buddhist in the sense that i do what they encorouge but i don't believe in afterlife or reicarnation i just like to live my life without the idea of something with no evidence to support it being the soure of everything. I just think were here Why waste a life on what someone may have said
See the Greeks and the roman gods gave me the first notions of god as a useless thought.Looking at the wonders they had to behold. They didn't understand the world,so gods where used to explain the things they couldn't understand. So I took it a set further, looking into the beliefs of the pentecostal church.I am not an atheist, nor am I agnostic.I just don;t think anyone is right yet.Mostly because of the murders committed in the name of god.
Why is the great Stephen Fry labelled as just a 'comedian'. Writer, broadcaster, polymath, and all round great person.

Jealous of whom ? You're alone !

lol how arrogant do you have to be to dismiss monotheism in a repulsive way and embrace the greek myth of polytheism with words like "beautiful" and "charming" and then have the stupidity to then go on and compare them as if he has never heard of the equivocation fallacy with such lack of conception of the one true god is beyond belief. Apart from that, mildly insightful.
NeXuzMotionzz 2 weeks ago
@NeXuzMotionzz What are you talking about? He never embraced greek polytheism with words like "beautiful" and "charming". He explisitly pointed out that nature is painful and unforgiving. Based on that you can not argue that there is any god or gods, that are all-loving, all-knowing and all-mighty. He therefore made the case that if there is gods/god they are not all-loving, beautiful or charming. They are unkind, temperamental and unpleasant!
DeepIntoMyThoughts 1 week ago 10
@DeepIntoMyThoughts he discredits monotheism saying it's ghastly cant be taken seriously, then in the same breath gives precedence to greek gods saying personification of natural wonders into gods makes more sense. He would love ancient times when polytheism was the norm and monotheists were being laughed at. So my problem isn't that he rejects both types of theism but rather prefers one over the other. But he also made the point you are referring to but I dont agree with it either, c next post.
NeXuzMotionzz 1 week ago
@NeXuzMotionzz Stephen Fry is, as he points out, a humanist. I therefore doubt that "he would love ancient times when polytheism was the norm" (at least not for that reason). He simply points out that if you empirically observe nature, polytheism seems more likely than montheism. He is personally a humanist and don't believe in monotheism, nor polytheism.
DeepIntoMyThoughts 1 week ago
@DeepIntoMyThoughts Because god is powerful enough to stop the suffering, loving enough to want to stop it, and knows that suffering exists as he is all-knowing, then there shouldn't be any suffering but clearly there is so such a god cannot exist. This argument has a logical flaw, because there may be good reasons for god to allow suffering to exist so even if he has good reasons to want to stop it, he may have better reasons to allow suffering. And there are many reasons like free will etc....
NeXuzMotionzz 1 week ago
@NeXuzMotionzz I find it hard to believe that god has a good reason to let millions of people live there entire life in hunger, and die of horrible diseases before the age of 10. What possible reason could all-loving god have for creating "the black death"? All the pointless suffering just so all-powerful god could let us have free will? I am sorry, but if that god is to exist, he will have to finde a better way to enforce free will upon us
DeepIntoMyThoughts 1 week ago
@DeepIntoMyThoughts very good 1st question but the second is flawed, " he will have to finde a better way to enforce free will upon us", if will is enforced then it is not free lol. Another reason linked to free will is found in Islamic theology which renders this life to be a test the result of which will be announced in the afterlife. So the fact god is testing us means there is going to be a variety out of which we will have both good and bad experiences. So joy and pain will be present.
NeXuzMotionzz 1 week ago
@NeXuzMotionzz I fear you have failed to see the irony in my last post. The abrahamic god have supposedly created man with free will. But yet, if man does not praise this narcissistic god he will burn for eternity. An atheist can live a kind and loving life, but he will still burn in hell for not believing in god! That is not "free" will!
DeepIntoMyThoughts 1 week ago
@DeepIntoMyThoughts Your last post contained a contradiction not irony. By just saying "But yet, if man does not praise god", you admit that a human has the capability to reject god which in itself is indication of choice and free will.
To deny, rebuke and defile the creator of heaven and hell, the creator of emotions such as love and kindness, then to complain about why he is punishing you is just funny lol.
Someone who thinks we are nothing but stardust shouldn't use words like love anyways.
NeXuzMotionzz 1 week ago
@NeXuzMotionzz Irony and contradiction does not exclude one another. I find the contradictions in the abrahamic religions, that you yourself have pointed out, ironic. If someone points a gun to your head, and says that you have to believe them, you are not truly free to make your own choice. btw: we are discussing if a all-loving god can exist, there is however not any evidence to support that he does.

VladBlok28 3 weeks ago
@VladBlok28 sez"Any argument that requires "belief" without providing evidence will not change a *rational* mind"
How about Belief in No God based on disproving man made myth religions?
Since Science says what happend pre Big Bang is unknow & may be unknowable, any claim is a hypothesis based on speculation.
To claim one KNOWS there is no God is a Belief.
Refusal to Believe is not possible.
You either Belief in something or Not.
You cannot Choose not to make a Choice.
Texmurphy51 3 weeks ago
@Texmurphy51 Yes, you can actually refuse to believe. I know that I DON'T know whether there is or isn't a God. This is NOT a "belief" but a FACT. I refuse to BELIEVE any teachings (scientific ones included) that don't provide factual proof. I might consider them as less or more plausible/interesting, but they won't change my mind. I KNOW for example gravity exists, not because I believe but because I've seen proof. This is why I will not jump off a building. See?
VladBlok28 3 weeks ago
@VladBlok28 sez"Yes, you can actually refuse to believe"
No you cant, you can SAY you refuse to believe but in reality you cannot control your thoughts to that degree.
You know this as well as I do so stop trying to make that claim.
Tell me how Science has show what happend pre Big Bang as with Gravity.
Fact is cosmologists admit to NOT knowing anything about that.
All their ideas are hypothesis based on their Beliefs.
Texmurphy51 3 weeks ago

Science hasn't made any claims as to what happened then other than giving possible theories, how does that make science wrong? (which is what you are trying to say??) YOU can't know what I believe. You also sound like a religious fanatic with your faulty logic

1 Belief there is a God
2 Belief there is No God.
I you have knowledge of the idea of God you MUST Believe one of these two.
Once can switch back & forth between the two Beliefs but you cannot choose NOT to Believe.

I like to believe that their is a God, that belief has got me through some hard times. I'm not definitely saying there is a God but I am saying that a belief in God has helped me a lot.
However, I would like to say that I belong to no religion that exists today as I can see no religion that follows their own rules; and even if they followed all those rules, most of them are prejudicial, unfair and offensive. This is all something God would not want, especially from his supposed preachers.

P.S I'm also not saying you're wrong here.

@femmesusan1 If a creator is truly all benevolent, he will not let there be babies that are born sick in the first place.
SacredSoul1990 2 months ago
@SacredSoul1990 The greatet feat the devil has EVER accomplished, is to make you believe he doesn't exist. He does, and he's very busy spewing his evil every where. I don't know why all of evil exists or what Gods plan is for us here. It seems to me that the only reason we are here, is to help one another.. For me, or anyone to try to be on the same level of conciousness as God is delusional. He's God. We are only humans. And we will all find out 'why' in the end. Not from Fry.
femmesusan1 2 months ago
@femmesusan1 That's a very poetic way to put things, I like that but it still does not change my opinion. I refuse to believe in a God who condemns people to hell simply because they did not believe in him in life regardless of whether the person was kind and caring or ruthless and cruel. A truly just God to me is One that punishes and rewards according to the actions of the person and not how much he believes in him.
SacredSoul1990 2 months ago
@SacredSoul1990 Even if God was like that I don't think it would be perfect, because each person is different. Why are we different? We don't really know apart from the fact that we all have different brains, same sort of structure yet there's so many differences. I think those differences are natural some people are just born bad for example someone may enjoy killing or think it's perfectly normal. Then there's society it changes peoples opinions and views on life and morality.
subby7866 2 months ago
@subby7866 Good point. I completely forgot about that. Well, that's absolutely true. Brain chemistry does play an important role in determining a person's behavior so I guess simply judging people by their actions is also unfair. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
SacredSoul1990 2 months ago

EvolBob1 2 months ago
@EvolBob1 I've only answered comments directed to me.I have zero doubts. God made the laws in which he wanted us to live by basically the 10 commandments. He also made us and asked only that we believe and praise him and try to follow his laws. I didn't say it- HE did. You nor I cant even begin to think on his level. He is above human. I know some things he reveals in the Bible sound scary but what happens after death is up to you.He warns us.I sin but I'm sorry & I know he forgives me
femmesusan1 2 months ago
@femmesusan1 If I've wronged someone I'll ask them for forgiveness, so if you've wronged God in anyway forgive yourself. The true god lives within you and is your only moral compass. The dipstick in the Bible is completely fictitious. No one should be expected to follow what they can't understand, or will be incapable of understanding, so why do you?
Even a dumb god would understand that!...another reason why I'm an Atheist.
EvolBob1 2 months ago
@EvolBob1 Why do you feel a need to explain or knock your inability to understand the Bible? I don't understand a lot of it, but what I do- works for me I don't understand Sanskrit grammar but it exists. Why does one fly in an airplane if one can't describe exactly how it works? One who has have faith doesn't need to understand God to the letter. The enthusiasim of your atheism suits you, and I'm glad you're happy w/ it. That's all that matters. Be happy w/ your decision.. .
femmesusan1 1 month ago

That taught me to not only disbelieve virtually everything in the Bible but to actually hate the Bible.
jimnpatcavell 1 month ago
@jimnpatcavell
I wouldn't go as far to endorse one to hate the Bible, but hate some of what is proposed. I am more amazed at what is left out - which is for me a sure sign it is fiction.
If one is going to Hate, hate the persons actions, rather than the person, otherwise you are the only one that suffers.

@femmesusan1 Though I doubt such an entity truly exists
SacredSoul1990 2 months ago
@SacredSoul1990 I see you doubt his existence. As subby7866 said and u agreed-some people are 'born bad'. No baby is born bad. God says where evil comes from. The devil is so pleased when we blame sin, sickness or 'bad brain chemistry' on God. It's just what he wants you to think. Again w/o out evil there would only be good. no hate, illness, crime, etc. I wish there was only good on this earth. I wish I had all of the answers.
femmesusan1 2 months ago
@femmesusan1 I can see that you're a kind and loving person but I sincerely doubt either one of us will be able to change the other's opinion but you are much more level headed than many of the christians and also the atheists here on Youtube and for that, you have my respect.
SacredSoul1990 2 months ago
@SacredSoul1990 What a very kind thing to say. Thank you very much, and you too have my respect. Anger doesn't belong when people are trying to understand each other and respect what the other believes. It's when the screaming and insulting starts, that there is doubt. If you are secure in your beliefs there is peace. Peace to you:)

@femmesusan1 So as long as you belive(without any empirical proof of his existence, notwithstanding an ancient middle-eastern collection of fairy stories) in an invisible,all-powerful, omnipotent magic man,you are superior to those silly atheist are you?You are the joke.Grow up and stop believing in fairy tales.
laiosto 1 month ago
