  • Is this supposed to be funny?

  • Come to think of it, this must be the origin of the animatronic parrot I got my mother, and we're both from Oho, (near Cleveland).

  • they do look good

  • guy in chair @ 1:01 looks like trololo guy.

  • The little touches in the decor are great: The 1960s-70s shades, the Last Supper picture on the dining room wall, the ornate light switches, the abstract patterns on the tablecloth and table lamps, the starburst clock and string of cars on the wall -- it's like being in my Croatian great grandma's home...

  • Had way too much Peptik this year...

  • What is the name of the Keeper of the Budgies? I can't quite make out the name.

  • @BThwaithe Tex and Edna Boyle

  • I also am Leutonian, and Stan and Yosh make fine tribute to tradition. I am like their show! We also Christmas Budgie.

  • Oiy I tradition come like this to me Leutonian reelatifs.

  • The haloopnids look tasty...

  • The guy at 1:05 is SO perfect! What a great video---thanks! :D

  • Love it! Can't get enough of that plaid!

"The traditional exchanging of the socks!"

  • The SCTV Network 90 years may have been the greatest moment in television history of the most talented comedians on the planet all working together for a significant amount of time. They were ALL genius's. John Candy and Eugene Levy were brilliant in a way that you rarely see today!!!

  • Exchanging socks, ewwwww.

  • And the shell i take home and dispose of there....

    greatest line ever

  • By the way, I love how Yosh has to shove the suspender of his lederhosen back up…reminds me of the problems I have with my bra when playing Polka.

  • This is hilarious! Everyone who hails from a Central or Eastern European country and/or has relatives there, knows some unusual Christmas (or other holiday) rituals, like feeding colored biscuits to animals on Christmas Eve or hosing people with cold water on Easter Monday…there's nothing that's too weird for us. And taking off your shoes upon entering somebody's home…or even having the host remove them from your feet — is a Polish custom I am still familiar with. I

  • @Prorokini1 Just yesterday I watched part of Rick Steve's European Christmas special on public television. Occasionally, I would think "That's kind of a strange tradition." This skit does a wonderful job of plugging into the idea that some of those traditions seem a little strange.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan I wonder if John Candy's Polish heritage had some influence on the creation of the Shmenge Brothers. BTW, Polish cabbage rolls rock…err, I mean, polka. But pierogies are even better. Everybody who has taste buds likes pierogies, I dare to say. The (very funny) Playboy interview has JC saying he grew up on thoroughly-cooked Polish cuisine and did not know meat wasn't naturally gray until he was 23. How very true…a good Polish stew is being cooked for a week or so.

  • @Prorokini1 My mother's caregiver before she died at age 91 (a good long life, as they say) was from Krakow, Poland, so I learned to appreciate pierogies and other Polish dishes. I now fry up kielbasa occasionally, even though I know it is probably not good for my health :-). I'm Irish.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan Also, I see that you are from Germany. One of my grandmothers was German, so I am about 25 percent German.

  • This is turning into a Cleveland joke, and I mean that in the best possible way!

  • I had two honors with this skit:

    1. I lived down the street from the house used in this skit.

    2. I seen John Candy when they were filming this! I was out collecting my paper route money.

John Candy was a comedy god.

  • 3:18 when we have too much bebki we forget. he he he! (hoh)

  • Funny ass D P's

  • leutonia sucks

  • HEY, LET'S DANCE!

  • Remember, everyone, to thank Mrs. Vilva Yevski for her coffee and cabbage rolls.

  • So where can I meet this Keeper Of The Budgie person?

  • It must be traditional for all the men to wear plaid

  • I'm TOTALLY going to put a hat on my tree this year!

  • Leutonians are just rich, elitist Lithuanians

  • John Candy like to dine at Alycia's Ukrainian restaurant in Winnipeg's north end.

  • Comment removed

  • And... the "Exchanging Of The Sox"... a wonderful tradition!

    OK... maybe not.

  • Comment removed

  • Leutonia refused to collaborate with the Nazis. Good people.

  • Oh course you all realize that SCTV is making fun of North End Winnipeg Ukrainians. It's all done in good taste. Funniest sketch ever.

  • The "Leutonian" Xmas song at the end is just some backwards talk... "Christmas, yrreM A ouY hsiW eW..."

  • This is so goofy and lovable at the same time, it warms my eastern European heart. I must go hang up the Christmas Budgie now!

  • Omg thanks for posting this clip!! My family always assumed the Schmenge Brothers were Hungarian like us and killed ourselves watching this! :) cabbage rolls and coffee! We used to have a budgie too, so the Christmas budgie part is still my favourite.

  • This is probably the best comedy sketch ever done!

I used to live for the SCTV show ..... RIP John

  • I miss John Candy! What a fun guy!!

  • "..because I'm dee veezator!" LMAO...MY FAMILY!

  • my feelings for this show are hard to describe....I love it , stellar writing , no budget, deluxe cast -everyone who has ever been on the show turned in memorable performances...regional references , backstage stories in Dave Thomas's book . .it's a TV friend.

  • It should be illegal for anything to be this funny! And they're all so cheerful you just want to smack 'em, lol. Hard to pick a favorite tradition--guess I have to go with the "traditional looking at the Christmas tree"--even my non-Leutonian family had that tradition! PRICELESS!!!

  • Hahaha. My family is Dutch... another distinctly "uncool" culture, and it's so funny how much of this stuff actually rings true to me! Makes me miss my family! :D

  • Where's the egg, Uncle Yosh?

  • Nice up

  • would love to see pepi long socks

  • Look at that cabbage roll...it must be 15 pounds!! The bigger the better at Christmas!! Look out for the budgie!!

  • This is the funniest skit of all time.

  • @paulinbaysville I also like SCTV's Death of a Salesman with Bones,Carlin,Montalban, etc...

  • I too am Leutonian and in my family it is not exact the same. We do the exchanging of the socks BEFORE the hanging of the hat on tree. It goes to show -- the no-limit variety of the rich and different Leutonian tradition.

  • @dougalkessler Thank you for sharing that. ROFLMAO!!!

  • @dougalkessler For a moment I didn't understand why Yosh took off his shoes. But then when I realized he was the visitor, it made sense.

  • Wish my family had a Christmas- Shmenge style!

  • If the name "Shmenge" doesn`t make you laugh, nothing will.

  • They forgot to say that with the traditional sock exchange they also exchange the traditional foot fungus for the New Year. :)

  • The comedy is so subtle, I didn't always get it when I was a kid.

  • This is my favorite SCTV video of all time!

Let's all do the dance of the Budgies!

kudos and kabbage rolls Don Cook !!!

  • Cabbage rolls and coffee = devastating sulphurous farts. Remind me nevcer to go near a Leutonian bathroom during Christmas.

  • Where can I get some suits like that?

  • Putting the hat on the tree. Love it. Nobody seems to know why.

  • Love those Schmenge brothers snazzy outfits!

  • I love how all of the comedians on SCTV are so versatile and play these personalities so differently.

  • The brilliance behind SCTV and all their sketches.....They are totally unbelievable situations. At the same time you feel like it has happened to you also in real life but you can't remember where or when. That is the sign of real comedy. We had to go with a stretch of crappy Canadian comedy like 'this hour' and junk like that. Thank God... The Trailer Park boys came along and showed us how funny Canadians can be again.

  • What a classic. I miss watching SCTV. People's Golden Global Choice!

  • My friend and I, in college, saw the movie "The Last polka" by the Schmenges. We created 'seestors" Bertha and Berenice Schmenge and made some home movies about them. I really wish I would have sent them to John Candy while he was stil alive.

  • This is great comedy, I really wish comedy was of this caliber today, they broke the mold on sctv.

  • "And the shell I take home and dispose of there."

This sketch is pure gold from beginning to end.

  • Can't be beat!

  • This is incredible and wonderful. I miss comedy writing like this.

"You know, the artificial tree originally came from Lutonia, where trees are now extinct."

This whole sketch is just a comedy gold mine. We don't get writing like this nowadays.

  • You have a nice, clean copy of this skit. It's a tradition (Lutonian, of course) in our house to watch the SCTV Christmas Show on Christmas Eve. We've done this since I recorded it in 1983 (84?). And, it's fun. Especially for the children!

  • @coralprincess25= The reason trees are extinct in Leutonia, is because their neighbor, Latveria, destroyed them all after the King of Leutonia called the ruler of Lateveria a metal faced sourpuss. Long story short, it all went downhill from there.

  • Poland + Lithuania=Lutonia

  • Leutonia is on the dark side of the balkans. everyone knows that!

  • Ever since I first saw this, I kid my wife (of slovak descent) about a 15 lb cabbage roll at Christmas time. They really do eat them then, just not that big. Thankfully! LOL

  • Look at that cabbage roll! It must be fifteen pounds!

  • @El135o MMMM SOOOO Good!! Can't be beat.

  • Wow, I haven't seen this in 25 years, thanks for posting.

  • Only the Schmenge family can make so many cabbage rolls out of one egg :) thats why I love the Schmenges! Thanks for posting this video!

  • Eh, those are 'jalubniks'.

  • As long as everyone's putting in requests. A long time ago I saw a Bobby Bittman sketch where he was was doing a public service message for the "libary" to clean up his image (I think) it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. Can't find anywhere.

  • "Get yourself to a liberry..."

  • library

    lol

  • @GregTuco I'm a long time mega fan of SCTV and I never saw that one, Greg. It sounds hilarious!

  • The greatest (only?) homage to Walter Ostanek ever!

  • One of the best comedy sketches ever ... TY.

  • OH, the fashions of the 70s!! Yikes!!

  • one that they should post on here is Rick Moranis as George Carlin. I know he's done it 3 times at least on the show. One he did a Annie Hall parody i think,Another was him doing stand up,but it was only like 1 minute, and finally one where he played the son on Death Of A Salesman. All 3 were funny. if anyone can get them,i'd appreciate it.

  • @Paulgr why isn't there greeeen wine? Grapes are green. So why isn't there greeeen wine?

  • how do you feel well? i can feel my arms, I can feel my hair, but how do you feel well? "hey how you feelin?" "I Feel Well" weird.

  • Can't be beat!

  • can you post the dusty towne special ?

  • I forgot about Dusty-OMG, I'm laughing just thinking about it!

  • Cabbage Rolls and Coffee, Mmm Mmm GOOD!

  • just to let all SCTV fans know- I cannot find any clips on Utube of the Dusty Townes Christmas special- especially the piece with John Candy posing as Divine. He is singing- Santa bring my baby back to me- made popular by Elvis- does this have something to do with it?

  • OMG reminds me so much of growing up in Scarborough Ontario!

  • @alfingers Hey I'm from Scarborough too

  • Geez, I miss those guys

  • OMG I'm dying....might ruin my keyboard with the water I just spewed all over laughing! This is so retro parts of it are authentic thanks for posting!!!

  • During Christmas in Schlockvokia, they exchange Kleenex.

  • Truly unbelievable humour stimulates uptake receptors- makes life more 'livable'.

  • schmenges RULE :)

  • What does this have to do with Shelby's 50th Birthday???????

  • ohh no! i got caught under the budgie!

  • Wow, those suits. whhaaha.

  • "You know...the artificial tree originally came from Leutonia, where trees are now extinct". LMFAO

  • My son loves cabbage rolls. He would get a big kick out of that 15 lb Christmas cabbage roll.

  • "who has the egg?"

  • I'm the Shmenges' biggest fan--and I've never seen this! DanCook47--A big delicious halupnik to you--and may you always have a flashy tree with a real nice hat!

  • Thank you! You will always be a welcome veesator at my house at Chrstmas. Be sure to wear some clean socks! Can`t be beat!

    Especially for the children.

  • Vhen you come veesit my house? Dere be plenty cabbage rollss 'n' coffee for you! Even better than Vilva Yatchke's!

  • @DonCook47 You know it! Man, everyone on this thread should come together and wear polyester suits and have a wonderful Leutonian party!! Who gets the doll; LOL!!

  • @sallythewerewolf oh my god are you serious!!!!??? I was raised on this one skit right here...i swear..this one skit...omg congratulations!

  • @gizzad --You are MY kind of people!! Let's break out the cabbage rolls and coffee and put that hat on the Christmas tree!:):)

  • dancook! f-yeah man, me and my family pretty much live off of this skit. can't be beat!

  • i tend to start this at 1:00 so it just rocks right in and none of the energy gets lost. people have no time to settle so thier like WHAT? and it's even funnier. love it

  • "who now must leave the room along with the women.." ;)

  • I feel sorry for yawnshmenge that he died! What a chubby polka man no offense.

  • Canada NEVER made a comedy show better than SCTV

  • @SpockBoy, It was Much better than SNL!!!!

  • @SpockBoy

You've never seen any episodes of "Night Heat", have you?

  • @SpockBoy Kids In The Hall?

  • @SpockBoy - Well, the Kids in the Hall were pretty good, too. I like 'em both.

  • Ah yes! the exchanging of the socks.

  • An excellent tradition at Chrstmas. After many viewings I did, finally, notice that when Stan takes off his shoes at Yost's his socks are mismatched. It's also shown when Stan and Yost dance for the Christmas Budgie.

  • these guys must have made hamtramck michigan more famous than it already is

  • this is so heartwarming...its a shame that the movie... A Christmas Story makes people overlook such a nice Christmas as this...the Schmenge Brothers do things right...

  • I agree with you about it being heartwarming. Funny yet poingnant at the same time. A perfect sketch and always commented on at my families Xmas get togethers, which, in a good SCTV way, always happens in January.

  • How can you not love the christmas budgie. Cabbage makes me gassy :(

  • The Traditional "Looking at the Tree"! LOL. (Oh God: "Exchanging of the Socks!!") Ahhh, memories! Bless you Yosh and Stan.

  • Cabbage rolls and Coffee UUMmmm UUMmmm Good!

  • Can't be beat!

  • Schmenge!

  • I could so go for a glass of papjik right now.

  • and the egg I take home and dispose of there

  • Absolutely classic...LMFAO!!!!!!

  • The Schmenge brothers are the best!

  • awesome
