  • Also I just want to add you two have some ridiculous expectations about how parents should treat their children. Not every parent has constant time for their children and being wrapped up in your work doesn't make you a "bad parent". Every family is unique and you saying you expected her parents to be authoritative is stupid as the sole reason she was interested in the Other World was because her parents there payed her attention. Her parents were still good people.

  • Doesn't have to be a movie for 10 year olds just because it's animated...

  • please read my comments from bottom to top!

  • I'm glad you guys chose to give it at least an "alright" review. I do think it had a "biblical model" though. Exodus 20:2-17 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you. Coraline learned in the end to appreciate the family that was given to her, despite their flaws, after which she was able to continue living in God's given land (as opposed to being a slave for eternity in the other Mother's world, i.e. hell).

You also mention that the mysticism of the "other home" was lacking. The other home is a parallel world, seen by only those that consciously interact with it. That's why Coraline's parents had no idea about their kidnapping. That's also why Wybie's grandma knew what was happening to Coraline.

  • Also, the whole identity of the two woman that lived downstairs was that they were washed up vaudeville showgirls. Part of being a show girl is being half naked, but there was no pornography in the movie at all. And under different circumstances I might agree that little amount of clothes is inappropriate for children, but that segment of the movie was one of the best pieces of comedy in the film and I was in stitches the whole time (my 11 year old sister was also laughing).

And for the more trivial things; Coraline was not a rip off of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The only thing these two stories share in common are the wacky characters and the idea of an alternate universe.

Coraline's adventure didn't just "make her friends with the neighbor-kid," it changed her as a person. That's the whole message of the story. She wished for something better and was taught that what she has is already fantastic.

You guys keep going on about how there was no plot, and there was no message or moral. It follows the outline that the woman in this movie stated (running away, realizing she was wrong).

  • These people are retarded, they just don't get it. They are so immature.

  • This is my new favorite comment.

  • Wait, didn't you make this?

  • Make the Video? Yes, I'm Christopher.

  • well, you do realise that just because a film doesn't have a Christian moral doesn't make it a bad film, right?

  • @synthtron2000 I agree. I'm 16 years old (also happen to be an atheist) and these people just completely missed the point of the movie. THERE WAS A LESSON! It was in the friggin tagline for Pete's sake- be careful what you wish for. If something seems too good to be true it is. And if they wanted to come at it from a Christian perspective they could have even likened her trade for the button eyes to selling your soul to the devil to live in paradise. But no. All we got was "creepy and boring".

  • Of course the movie is based on the wonderful book by Neil Gaiman and reading it beforehand could've saved this lot any disappointment in the story. At least the man points out the facts he likes about the movie, the woman just makes me really angry throughout but especially when saying that she "didn't see the movie in 3D, so...", well so what? So she couldn't appreciate the visuals and the work that went into the film?

  • lol @ 1:50! "ecscape."

what's with the audio only coming from the left during your review? you're right, the parents were awful for the most part, they could've been nicer even if they had a stressful job. i only found the movie to be decent overall. i could see the almost -nudity being a bit of a problem for some peeps.

  • Not every story intended for children need be edifying or inspirational.

I think there is actually some value in pointing out to children that sometimes parents may be less attentive than they should be owing simply to the exigencies of making a living...and that later, they may be better parents---not a moral message, but in any event an eminently practical one. (There may also be an implicit call to forgive parents.)

As for adults, any reminder that childhood isn't idyllic is a good one....

  • you have very nice reviews but the sound quality is terrible!
